House votes to kill Obama mortgage plan

WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) - The House passed a bill Tuesday to kill a signature Obama administration program that helps homeowners stay in their homes but has faced criticism as ineffective.

The House voted 252 to 170 to stop any new funding for the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP). Eleven Democrats joined Republicans to defund the program.

"Yes, the HAMP program has a lot of problems," said Rep. Barney Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat, on the House floor. "But, the absence of any program leaves homeowners worse off."

Even Barney Frank can't drum up a stronger show of support than this? If Obama vetos this bill he will have to do some fancy dancing to make it look like anything except disregard for taxpayers when it comes up in the 2012 campaign. And it will. HAMP is an excellent example of out of control spending driven by Washington politics and how ineffective that can be. It turns out to be a great argument for smaller government.

Of course they voted to stop it, it helps the middle class. Republicans only vote for things that make corporations and the top 2% of Americans richer. They voted to cut meals on wheels, but won't touch the millions in oil subsidies that tax payers have to pay to the richest oil companies in this country. Who votes for these people.

And we are surprised because? We are talking about the party of the rich (I hope none of those reps were from MD) what do they care whether people have a roof over their heads.
Any of their rich friends giving up any of these numerous homes so that people who are going to be displaced can use?
    Waiting, waiting . . . . . didn't think so!

No one really cares about that and it's a drop in the bucket. The program did not work and I knew a few people who got the runarounds from the banks "pretending" they were going to help them. So I don't believe this is an "upsetting" move on President Obama's side so ................MOVE ON REPUBS!!!

And in regards to the Democrats that crossed over – they must be in "vulnerable" districts!!! So again, we will MOVE ON!!!

I look forward to a day when the bums who voted this program down are kicked out of office and they can't pay their mortgages. Only then will they know the pain they have wrought.

Republicans...you were elected because you promised to create JOBS, not undue everything that has been accomplished by our President. Since being elected, you've done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about jobs, but have spent your time engaging in useless political theater, trying to appease your rabid right-wing base by attempting, again and again, to "screw" our nation's first black President. It's time for you to knock this crap off and get to work putting America back to work.
