Santorum blames 'abortion culture' for problems with Social Security

(CNN) - Potential 2012 presidential candidate Rick Santorum said the "abortion culture" in America is to blame for the failing Social Security system.

In an interview with WEZS Radio in Laconia, New Hampshire, Tuesday, the former Republican Pennsylvania senator said abortion rates are influencing the number of children born in the United States and there are therefore not enough children to support the program long-term.

"The Social Security system in my opinion is a flawed design, period. But having said that, the design would work a lot better if we had stable demographic trends," Santorum said. "A third of all the young people in America are not in America today because of abortion."

Santorum, an outspoken opponent of abortion, made the comments in response to a caller who said abortion rates are to blame for the problems with Social Security and Medicare.

"We have seven children so we're doing our part to fund the Social Security system," Santorum said. "I want children to be living in America and contributing. America's greatest resource is our people and we're denying America what it needs, which is more Americans."

Santorum was in New Hampshire, the first-in-the-nation primary state Tuesday to meet with voters and headline a GOP dinner in Concord.

Amen Rick! At a time when there are no jobs for anyone, the thing we need most is... more people. Brilliant!

Right. Has nothing to do whatsoever with people living longer, the baby boom generation aging and the mismanagement of funds- on several levels.
Children not working and paying into the system is to blame. Go with that, Rick. You are living up to your namesake of "Santorum".

7 children is environmentally irresponsible Rick. Soon this planet's space and resources won't support its population.

So, the purpose of having kids to to pay for our retirement? Anyone else have a problem with this?

Wow! How far do you have to twist stuff to get your point across. I wonder if the other argument could be made? If some of those non-aborted kids are growing up on welfare and that is what is breaking the system? Or Maybe God gave Rick the power to judge other people here on earth. But really, Seven Kids? Good to see you got the money to feed all these kids that will some day enter the work force and help keep unemployment up! I wonder if he knows what the unemployment number is? High eights? That's a lot of Americans not supporting the system. Maybe he should invest his time in real problems. Instead of making stuff up as he goes along.

Can you say Coo Coo.............so we need more poor children to make our country stronger? Hey why don't we do away with birth control pills as well? How many children are not born because of contriception? If anyone votes for this crackpot, they should be taken from the polls in a straight jacket and taken to the psych ward for an immediate psychological exam.

Sure Santorum, we should all be the Duggars right? You are ignoring the fact that a lot of people only have what children they feel they can afford or like myself make the decision not to bring children into this world.

Clogging the country to the brim with people will not solve its problems.

Rick Santorum is an idiot. Abortion has no effect on Social Security whatsoever. His seven children may pay into the system, but they will also take from the system, a net gain of zero. Another Republican idiot. Thank you, Tea Party.

Santorum is an idiot. The only thing that would change if abortion were banned is that the number of dead and maimed women would skyrocket. Women have always had abortions and always will no matter what misogynists like Santorum do or think.

"Fixing" Social Security is as easy as falling off a log. It should never be a part of any debate. Ever.

Rick fails to take into account how many of that "third of all young people" would be unwanted children. How many would grow up on welfare and how many would end up in prison? Gee Rick, thanks for your contribution of 7 children. Unfortunately, I doubt you have 7 kids because you want to save Social Security. Religious fanatics have more kids because using birth control is against church teachings. The US has lower birth rates for many reasons like, educated women who pursue careers, more disposable income means we have fewer kids, etc

I'm astounded by his absolute stupidity. Sure! Lets all go have 7 or 8 kids so we can totally drain all our resources and overpopulate the world, but Social Security will have tons of money!

On a planet that is dying from overpopulation, we need to find more sensible ways to solve our economic difficulties. Every problem we face in our lives is directly related to overpopulation!

Seriously? 1/3 of children are aborted? Where is he getting these numbers?

More children = More $ in the social security fund or more $ being taken out of the fund. Not the soundest arguement.

Just when you think this fraud of a man could not go any lower in search of votes, he makes you feel stupid for under-estimating his ability to dumb it down with pure dishonesty. There's pandering, and then there's the Santorum Standard. Only he would cling to the abortion "issue" in such a shameful, misleading way. He is King Whore.

And all these extra Amercians will be republicans, so none will collect welfare or medicare or medicaid. They'll just support social secutiry. Sound reasoning, Senator.

Yes, clearly people having abortions is killing social security. It's not the baby boomer bulge from after World War II or the fact that overall in all industrialized nations we don't all have 14 kids to work on the farm anymore.

Can the Republicans find ANYONE to lead their party that isn't a moron or a liar? Anyone?

"A third of all the young people in America are not in America today because of abortion." This is the single stupidest comment to ever come from the mouth of any human being ever! Mark my word, comedians will be repeating this for years. When did it become acceptable for politicians to be complete strangers to reality?

His statement is absolutely ridiculous! How about all of the 40 and 50 year olds who are on social security disability, yet perfectly able to work? I know quite a few people who are on SS disability but who work "under the table". or, they move furniture when they relocate, etc. The government needs to investigate these persons. How about no disability unless you're missing a limb, you're blind, or your deaf. Alcoholism, fibromyalgia, depression, all of these "illnesses" shouldl be abolished from qualifying a person to be able to collect social security disability!

Social Security may be flawed, but abortion has zero to do with it.

Perhaps the number of children per family is decreasing, not because of abortion, but because women are earning higher educations and pursuing their careers more so now than when seven-children families were the norm. Does Santorum blame working women for "not doing their part"?
