Broun: Democrats hatched 'diabolical plan'

Washington (CNN)-Republican Rep. Paul Broun sounded off on what he calls the Democrats' "diabolical plan" to steer Congress toward a government shutdown Wednesday on CNN's Newsroom. He challenged President Obama to "start acting like a leader" in a rant against the failure to reach a budget agreement.

Broun also denied that accusing the president of socialism last January equals name calling, saying instead, "It is just pointing out a fact. The president, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama believe the federal government should do everything for everybody. They believe in a socialistic Washington-controlled government that tells everybody what kind of health care we can have, what kind of light bulbs we can have."

The third-term Georgia congressman accused Democrats of hatching a plan during the lame duck session to try to "figure out how to get Nancy Pelosi to give Harry Reid a big majority in the Senate and re-elect Obama next year."

"They said…'We will shut government down, blame Republicans. There will be backlash against Republicans and we will get all these things accomplished,'" he declared. "I think it was a very diabolical plan they put together back last year after the November election. They are carrying it out."

Broun blasted Obama's participation in budget talks, saying that he "has been AWOL, missing in action," and that, "even the Democrats have been bemoaning the fact he is AWOL, missing in action."

Drawing a line between Democrats and the GOP, Broun denied that Republicans were trying to tell people what to do with their lives by advocating the defunding of Planned Parenthood, NPR, and PBS.

"We don't have constitutional authority under the original intent of the Constitution to fund Planned Parenthood, NPR, a lot of things we are doing," he said.

"We have to find bridges to send the powers back to the people as our founding fathers meant for us to. I believe in freedom and the president and the leadership of the Democratic Party believes that government needs to control everybody and everything. That's not freedom."

a liar and a fraud like most Republicans. kind of like Linsay Grahm saying on Face the Nation Sunday that Hillary Clinton wants to start her own "private army". (yep, that's a quote)
Like Bob Schieffer said to him, "I find this all very hard to believe"
Goes for all the Republicans. They are "hard to believe"

Well Rep Broun, you will soon be jobless so you have that nice retirement to look forward to. By the way, the oil corporations and banks thank you for all of those tax cuts.

I doubt that many Republicans who insist on using the term Socialism as a derogatory epithet know what it means. For them the term soialism it is a means for terrifying individuals into believing that somehow the US government is coming to steal children in the night.

What is more fearful than socialism is the prospect of idealogues bent on payback to their political supporters at the cost of out tax dollars and well being. I'm sure Rep. Broun is one of the poster children for that ideology.

Imagine a world of anarchy where citizens are held hostage by unregulated business interest. Oh there may be a revolution coming..... but it is not the one the Tea Party and Republican party want to know about.

The draconian republican party are attempting to dilute the debate with self-centered egotistic rants against the union. The republicans want to fundamentally change the union into their own paranoid delusional democracy where nobility is the core of the nation. That is why they want to introduce the "trickle up effect" tax breaks where the wealth has only upward mobility. To the draconian party(republicans) any resistance is met with the removal of funding and obedience is demanded without explanation. That is why the authoritarian regime(Tea Party) is changing the debate into light bulbs as a power grab from democrats while they, draconian party eliminates funding for Planned Parenthood, NPR, EPA and all that is not obedient to their authority and their cause. In other word, the republicans are attempting to remove all obstacles to their complete authoritarian conservatism and by destroying NPR, the voice on dissent is eliminated and their power increases.

"Fox News will accurately report what the Democrats have done, and NOT done."

Which one of the GOP's 2012 presidential candidates will they be paying to do that for them?

Im so proud to be a Georgian! All of these elected fools elevate us to such a high level. What an embarrassment. Here comes the spin machine. All a master plan to make the repubs look bad. Always passing it to someone else, never their own fault-3rd termer. I thought the mantra was Pelosi&Reid are stupid and worthless and now theyre diabolical masterminds? Yep,Johnboy is a genius of a leader. They cant have it both ways. If that is the definition of socialism, then Georgia has been Socialist for a long time. Welcome to 2011 in the South where we elect Nathan Deal for governor- the ethically challenged other congressman from the great state of GA-where you can carry a handgun in a national park, but cant buy beer on Sunday because that would be blasphemous. What was that about govt being in our everyday lives?

And the Republicans think that the federal government should only do everything for the Corporatocracy, so I don't get his point.

BTW – why do they always bring up light bulbs? Must be one of the Fox News talking points.

The election of 2012 will tell it all.....Quote from an April 01 Wall Street Journal article written by Stephen Moore; "Today in America there are nearly twice as many people working for the government (22.5 million) than in all of manufacturing (11.5 million). This is an almost exact reversal of the situation in 1960, when there were 15 million workers in manufacturing and 8.7 million collecting a paycheck from the government.
It gets worse. More Americans work for the government than work in construction, farming, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, mining and utilities combined. We have moved decisively from a nation of makers to a nation of takers. Nearly half of the $2.2 trillion cost of state and local governments is the $1 trillion-a-year tab for pay and benefits of state and local employees." (end quote)
Here is the Hard Truth; our children and grandchildren are subtly being saddled with an enormous debt being ran up every day by Obambi and his Liberal Democrat friends in Congress and the Senate. It IS this block of "younguns' who are being sold-out and they need to realize what is happening.
If Social Security is good enough for the working Masses of this country, it should be good enough if you are employed by OUR government.......Simply because one is employed by OUR government (both Fed and State, and yes….this includes School Teachers as well) does not give Carte Blanche for Lifetime Retirement and Health Care! No One has paid one dime of Retirement or Health Care for ME except ME....We need to remember that all things come from God and I thank God for giving me the ability to work and earn a living but I never expected any government program to take care of ME......The greedy and selfish TAKERS in America today need to realize that regardless of all the protesting, screaming, hiding out in another state, boycotting, and even voting people out will not change the fact that we as a nation are BROKE, in way over our head, and are on a down- hill slide to bankruptcy.....there are more TAKERS in our Great nation than there are GIVERS! Do the can anyone with an ounce of common sense think that the shrinking number of Givers are somehow going to meet the forever increasing financial appetite of a forever-growing government!
If you don't NEED it (and I mean really NEED it) don't TAKE it!

It's hard to take GOPers seriously anymore. Their continual lies and name calling is, for me, beyond contempt. It's downright silly, and serves no real purpose but to bring into question the *maturity* of this New Republican Party, and whether or not they should - any of them - be in a postion of authority within our government at all.

  16. Rev Mkell,

"Compromise" Is when both sides shift their demands to a mutually agreed midpoint! The GOP/Tea Party idea of compromise is 'do as your betters say'!

The problem: people believe this sh-t despite it being devoid of any factual basis whatsoever. They latch onto it like starving ideologue lampreys. This nutjob Broun can now safely backpedal and moonwalk his crazy statements to save face, but because CNN and the rest uncritically published and disseminated his nonsense, it will now have a life of its own and will gather legitimacya nd credibility through repetition on right wing echo chamber blogs, etc. Not a single factoid or bit of evidence will be offered to support will be taken on faith because, well, it's what they want to hear.

Now I've heard several Republicans say the Democrats are hoping for a shutdown, yet, When the Speaker of the House (John Boehner) informed the Republican Caucus to come up with a plan for a government shutdown, they all cheered. So I have to conclude that the Republicans are the ones wanting to shut the government down.

It sure sounds like the republicans are accusing the democrats on what they have been doing for 2 years in the senate. Denying any votes to come to the floor for all the bills that were passed by the congress. Of cours the republicans did this because this is what the american people wanted. What a bunch of hypocritical people who don't give a damn about anyone besides their corporate and rich cronies. Also, for all the republicans that say social security and unemployment insurance is entitlement, they are wrong. I have been paying my share to both of these for years and I should be able to collect when the time comes for SS and if I ever lose my job from unemployment ins. The entitlements are the tax breaks and give aways to the rich and corporations. So, republicans, get your facts right when you talk about who gets entitlements and who doesn't!!

It's quite stunning that Republicans pretend to want government out of our lives, yet they literally WANT THE GOVERNMENT to force women to give birth against their will, dictate who can marry whom and force their dumb religion into our public schools. Republicans LOVE big, oppressive, intrusive government. They want the government to control the most personal aspects of our lives! But they care SO MUCH about light bulbs!

I think that these folks believe that Americans are idiots and will believe whatever lie no matter how outrageous. This is the epitome of insulting to intelligent folks. He will now be labeled a hero on Fox News for his lies. Is this where our country is headed? Our government is now being hijacked by the tea party and this guy has the stones to lie. Freaking Unbelievable!

I am so tired of both parties and their constant bickering and whining. You were elected to do a job, now do it. There is no excuse good enough for Congress not to agree on a budget for the country. The leaders of the parties and all those we elected should not bow to their political constituencies and parties, but do what's best for the country. Be American, not Republican or Democrat! Get this done!
