Washington (CNN) - If life (and politics) sometimes seems stuck in the ninth grade, the recent gyrations between the White House and congressional Republicans is a perfect case in point. The topic: averting a government shutdown. The meeting: on Capitol Hill between House GOPers and Senate Democrats.

Not invited to the party (or so they say): The White House.

Senior House Republican cautions GOP colleagues on shutdown

Washington (CNN) - Idaho Republican Rep. Mike Simpson, a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, cautioned fellow Republicans about calling for a government shutdown.

"My concern with a shutdown is what is our long term goal? What are we trying to achieve? If you're going to shut the government down you better be willing to achieve those goals," Simpson told reporters off the House floor. "If it is repeal Obamacare, do we think in two weeks or a month Obama's going to go – 'you guys were right, and sign onto it?' I don't think so. So you better look at what your goals are and what you're willing to accept or don't do it."

Tea Party: Bring on a government shutdown

Washington (CNN) - To the Tea Party movement that helped fuel Republican electoral success last November, a promise is a promise.

So when it became clear last month that House Speaker John Boehner, a conservative GOP hero, was willing to accept far smaller spending cuts for the rest of the current fiscal year than what Republicans pledged in the 2010 election campaign, the Tea Party reaction was both swift and decisive.

Broun: Democrats hatched 'diabolical plan'

Washington (CNN)-Republican Rep. Paul Broun sounded off on what he calls the Democrats' "diabolical plan" to steer Congress toward a government shutdown Wednesday on CNN's Newsroom. He challenged President Obama to "start acting like a leader" in a rant against the failure to reach a budget agreement.

Broun also denied that accusing the president of socialism last January equals name calling, saying instead, "It is just pointing out a fact. The president, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama believe the federal government should do everything for everybody. They believe in a socialistic Washington-controlled government that tells everybody what kind of health care we can have, what kind of light bulbs we can have."
