House passes one-week funding bill

(CNN) - The Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a one-week government funding bill Thursday that cuts spending by $12 billion and funds the Pentagon for the remainder of the current fiscal year.

The measure is not expected to clear the Democratic-controlled Senate. President Barack Obama has promised to veto the measure if it reaches him because of the programs it would cut.

This bill to fund troops should be named the Bill to Throw a Wrench in to the Economy and Kill Poor Women.

Throw a wrench in to the economy (stopping loans and wages, means lower home sales and greater defaults on mortgages) and kill women (refunding Planned Parent hood will cost many women their lives .. this is not just hype but there are a large number of problems that can wrong in a wanted pregnancy (not talking about abortions) that if not properly diagnosed, can and do kill ... do I need to list them with graphic descriptions and how Planned Parent hood prevents these deaths everyday.

Should the U.S. Govenment close tomorrow, as a life-long registered consevative republican, I will in no way shape or form support ANY current Washington politician including those in the Senate and Commander and Chief. Shouldn't the emphasis and concentration be focused on our Troops? Our American prioroties are completely mixed up. There shall be nothing more important than sending our Troops into battle. PASS A BUDGET, RE-FOCUS ON OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN UNIFORM and begin working diligently on the 2012 budget. BE RESPONSIBLE. David Osborn, Colorado

Because of our system's structure, cutting the programs will hurt the people in the nation that need help the most. I see older (white) American advocating a shutdown.... but if you tried to cut their medicare or medicaid they would have a stroke. Americans are selfish and greedy!!! God Help us All!!!

It is unreal to me how this newly elected Congress can allow a furlough to happen. There are no excuses. They are acting as if they are children. I would like to remind our newly elected officials that they are playing with people's LIVES. This is NOT DISNEY WORLD-WASHINGTON. This is the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – last time I checked. How is it that we can help countries around the world but fail to take care of our own? It is time now to return to God & ethics. I am certain that our Soldiers from the past & in the present did not & do not sacrifice their lives for this deplorable. One last note, I am sure many in the US would agree with me, FURLOUGH CONGRESS. But, we all know that would never happen because a budget would have been passed way before now.

I forgot to complete the sentence, "I am certain that our Soldiers from the past & in the present did not & do not sacrifice their lives for these deplorable actions by Congress."

CNN...Why are you not providing the details to this funding bill? I have no doubt you have the details – if you did perhaps people might understand why this is simply more grandstanding by the GOP. Pay the troops in exchange for more ideological social engineering? Blackmail using our troops as leverage...goes in the trash.

    Budget cutting?
Start cutting the salaries from WH officials and they will have real sense of feeling. If not, print more Money.

    Shutting-dawn the WHITE HOUSE?

Well, you will opened it immediately, if the Taliban/Alqoaida crosses the border from Canada into US.

What if we stop paying non-essential personnel like member of Congress. But the even if we finally do get a budget, let’s still not pay Congress!!

Yes, Veto a bill that pays our servicemen and women – how utterly disgraceful. In the meantime, when my husband doesn't get paid for services ALREADY performed, the electric company, water department, landlords, mortgage companies, and lending institutions, not to mention gas stations, grocery stores and the like are not going to care that the government hasn't passed a budget or CR to pay us, and millions of other American families. Not to mention the fact that my husband, like many others, is currently deployed to a place where people are trying to kill him – but he is still expected to go outside the wire and focus on the mission at hand while wondering if his family is getting groceries or being evicted?

If the members of Congress and the President do their jobs and find a way to pay my husband and other military members, then I strongly urge all the military members to follow the example being set before them. NO PAY=NO SERVICE.

Nope. Not going to fly. Holding the troops hostage while the Greed Over People tries to slam through 12B in cuts that cause damage to middle and lower class citizens and females. The ideological extremism of the Rethugs has to stop. Until they come to grips that deficits and budgets have two sides: expenses AND REVENUES they just prove to us all how full of bs they are. Stop the corporate welfare and stop the class warfare.

Okay the powers that be might need to look into cutting their pay checks and stop loaning money to other countries, and pay those of us that are in the military. We have bills and families that need food and other things.

Who's the commie that is censoring comments today? Everyone knows Obummie has broke his word 10's if not a hundred times since he has been in office. This is one time I hope he keeps his word and vetoes the week extension. A pea brain has already figured out that he should have gotten this done before last October when he had super majorities.

I keep reading that the Republican House is passing bills. It is when it gets to the Senate that compromise seems to go out the window. Remember there are Dems in the house, yet they pass the bill. So you dems, I am an indep. and not an extreme tea bagger (as you call them) and I am also a housewife who knows what it means to live inside your budget. We need to cut wasteful democratic spending.....period!!!

Bonehead's contention essentially is that if America were a sinking life raft filled with women, children, military personnel, and rich men carrying huge heavy trunks full of gold boulllions and dubloons, we should throw the women, children, nad military personnel overboard in order to ensure that the raft stays afloat......
    Inglorious bastard that he is.

Hold firm Mr. President!! Do not allow them to arm-twist you into accepting that which you know in your heart is unaccceptable.

Be careful what you wish for Tea Party, because the last time there was a shutdown people blamed the Republicans for it.

Why is it that the US has one of the LOWEST EFFECTIVE corporate tax rates among the developed countries? (note, capitalized for emphasis upon the important terms). Why is it that the US gives substantial aid to prosperous corporations (for example, GE spent $200 million to lobby for loopholes in the federal income tax code over the past decade, made $26 billion in American profits over the past five years, and not only paid absolutely no federal income taxes, but got itself a $4.1 billion rebate from the IRS).

From what I see, the GoP are simply fighting to give even more of this country to the corporations and extremely wealthy. The DNC, on the other hand, are cowards and afraid of confronting the GoP.

I’m not sure what to think about the current looming shutdown. However, I am sure that the US is being sold to the corporations and the wealthiest Americans by the GoP.

Well...here we go. Hurt those in need or the common man. I agree...let's cut some salaries of these fat cats and see what happens. Also heard a story today that the cost of the Iraq war has been $109 billion...how much is the budget shortfall? Seems to me my vote went for a candidate that promised to end the war. Still waiting!

always a catch. Let's fund the pentagon, while sucker punching cutting this and that. Make it a give and take. The dems and "president" have already made their stand clear, and as usual, the sides are not in agreement. Why not just fund the pentagon for the rest of the year and do the stupid $hi+ they do, wasting their time – oh, at no pay, BTW. If they aren't doing their job why should they get paid, when the military has to do it pay or not? That's utter nonsense.

And they should not get the back pay once they do get their circus act together. They should be held accountable for having not done it right on time, like I am at work.

We need a "change" in our government. All of them.

I can not believe the democrats are shutting down the government due to refusal to cut $61B from the budget.
Incredible! And for the people who side with the democrats, what are you thinking!! I jst shake my head......

Doggone Right!!! This let the American people know that President Obama is not just sitting around DOING NOTHING like MOST accuse!!! President Obama always wanted to PUSH COMPROMISE – the reason why Health Care took too long!!! Congress and the Senate should COMPROMISE to come up with a plan – the Democrats SHOULD NOT go any further and force the Republicans – WITHOUT the Tea Party – to meet them halfway!!!
