Washington (CNN) – District of Columbia Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton lashed out at Congress over the budget battle on Capitol Hill, saying it's time the District of Columbia "told the Congress to go straight to hell."
The Democratic non-voting member of Congress represents many of those who would be affected by a possible government shutdown. President Obama and congressional leaders are currently negotiating a deal to try to avoid a shutdown when the current continuing resolution that funds the government expires Friday. A visibly agitated Norton criticized members of Congress for their treatment of her constituents.
"District residents are being treated as colonists of the Congress of the United States. This is the equivalent of bombing innocent civilians," Norton told Washington news station WTTG-TV Thursday.
Norton blamed Republicans for pushing policy riders in a proposed stopgap spending measure that would prevent local taxpayer funds from paying for abortions.
The 11-term delegate said she is "not confident" a budget deal will be reached before Friday.
"If they don't get a deal done, if these Republicans insist that if they don't get the whole pie then take the whole country down with them, then we have got to make them pay the price," Norton said.
Sadly, a government shutdown means DC residents trash won't get picked up. I think it should all be mailed to GOP members as a reminder of all the good things they're doing for Americans.
The entire country should tell Congress to go straight to hell by voting against every incumbent in the next election, regardless of political affiliation. They were hired to do a job. They're not doing it. We need people in there who are willing to compromise to reach an agreement. Remember those documents. . . the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Done via compromise. The current batch of senators and congresspeople are complete idiots.
Yeah, once again its the Republicans fault. Lets just remember that the Dems could've paased a budget last year when they controlled both houses and the White House, but decided not to because they wanted to save their butts come election time. Looks to me like the Dems deserve a little credit for stalling things too
The party of NO doesn't care about the residents of DC. The war on the poor and soon to be poor (middle class) continues!
God bless Rep. Norton. It's infuriating to know that 600K residents (a greater population than the entire state of Wyoming) is barred from having any say or stake in a situation that will greatly affect them. Under the rules of a government shutdown, most city services will also be ceased, thrusting us into a financial and service crisis that NO OTHER REGION would have to suffer. Truly the epitome of taxation without representation, and I couldn't agree with Ms. Norton more.
Tell them Ellie. They will pay thru the nose AGAIN. Now the wingnuts have stooped so low as to leverage the troops and their loved ones .
While I agree that Republicans are doing (and saying) all they can to bring the Government to a halt, I don't agree that we should to allow our conversations to feed into vulgar generalities which serve no other purpose than to rile everyone into a incoherent media frenzy. Fact is, journalists live for just this type of crass banter, repeating ad nauseum the words spoken in anger, thus overshadowing those who are out of reach of the media camera's, but truly ARE working for a better America.
Aww, the parasites are mad that the host body is rejecting them. Too bad, so sad.
All Americans should tell the REpubs to go straight to hell. And we will in 2012 or sooner.
Rachel Maddow made an interesting argument last night. She asked if it was reasonable to put in charge of running the government and the country people who feel that "government IS the problem." It's a valid question. Why would you entrust anything of value to people who do not respect its value?
are you serious. Those quote were about the worst ones ever I have seen written. Money being stopped for abortion is as bad as the bombing of innocent civilians. I believe she has a screw loose somewhere. :)
People of the United States of America and REP Norton,
Why should the American Tax payer have to pay for an Abortion for some stupid teenager etc. who could no say NO and keep her legs closed.Let rhe SOB who made her pregnant pay for it or arrest his ass.
Well Eleanor, since you mooch all of your money from the federal government and waste it hell ; I mean DC er uh Hell. Wait ...District of Columbia is Hell and was the Armpit of the Nation. Ms. Holmes and Mr. Snort and Lick Barry and turned DC in a whole new level of Hell and you all live it. Which means that you really said go to your house.
People of the United States of America and REP Norton,
Why is it the people in the Democratic Party never promote ADOPTION as an alternative to ABORTION.You talk about Republicans and Sara Palin as NAZI's the Democrates are the largest promoters of KILLING HUMAN FLESH and BLOOD on a par with the Chinese Communists!
Yes, I think it's time everyone in the US told the Congress to "go straight to hell."
Regardless of whatever they come up with for the Budget, it will only be a bandage to our wounded Economy. One of the most underrated and overlooked causes to our failing Economy is the Policy in place for delinquent Non-Custodial Parents. If you were to take an Audit of how much contribution was made to the Economy before these Policies were in place (go back to the last 10 – 15 Years), you'll discover that there were more Non-Custodial Parents stimulating the Economy. The focus of this Policy was supposed to be "In the best interest of the Children", however, the "tools" that the States use to collect money for delinquent (whether willing or non willing ) Non-Custodial Parents are not in "the best interest of the Children" or the Economy.
An example to this is, say you have a "Willing Non-Custodial Parent" that visits he children regularly and pay's child support on time as ordered by the Courts then suddenly an unforeseen circumstance(s) arises and now is unable to make a payment or payments on time. Depending on what State you live in, the "tools" used to enforce the Child Support Policy have devastating effects on everyone! Theses so called "Tools" to collect Past Due Payments include: Suspension of Driver's License, Suspension of Professional License, Tax Intercepts, Lien on Property, No Passport, Reporting to Credit Bureau, Funds taken from Bank Accounts, Intercept of any Awards or winnings of money as well as other methods that eventually lead to Financial Bondage. Now if you multiply this by all the "Willfully Paying Non-Custodial Parents" that are dealing with this, you'll discover that there are Million of American Tax Payers that are unable to Buy Homes, get Loans, Finance Auto's, Get Business Loans, keep their Business open, practice their Profession, open Bank Accounts (or will close their Account for fear of Funds being taken, will work "under the table" and not pay taxes, not have Health Insurance, and the list goes on.
Does this have an effect on the American Economy? Again, take an Audit of this Child Support Policy and you'll find that not only is this NOT "in the Best interest of the Children", nor the American Economy. Take away these "Tools" and replace them with methods that "Assist" rather than "Resist" the Non-Custodial Parent in fulfilling their obligation and you will see one of the Largest Jump to to our Economy in many Years. This is "in the Best Interest of the Children now and Years to come"
Why don't they put a tax on tax refunds to increase revenues!
This is the GOP's way of getting revenge on all the poor Americans, especially African-Americans, who voted for Obama. These same hateful people would expect poor black kids to go fight and die in their wars only to remain second-class citizens (just like their grandfathers in WWI and WWII). If the GOP wants to do this to poor people, then poor people should flee to Canada or another country if there's ever a draft.
