Gingrich: Obama holding troops 'hostage' over budget

Washington (CNN) - Likely Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich Friday laid the blame of a possible government shutdown squarely on the feet of President Obama, saying the commander-in-chief is intentionally holding U.S. troops "hostage" so Democrats can prevail in the budget showdown.

"Let's be clear," Gingrich said during a speech at Liberty University Friday. "President Obama is deliberately seeking to hold the men and women in uniform hostage so the politicians can fight over the budget and use the threat of not paying the troops their weapon."

Gingrich's comments are in reference to the president's pledge Thursday to veto a Republican-backed spending bill that aimed to cut spending by $12 billion and fund the Pentagon for the remainder of the current fiscal year. The president and Democrats opposed the measure because of the programs it would cut, including a provision that would prevent Washington, DC taxpayer money to be used to fund abortion providers.

The president called the GOP bill a distraction while House Republicans said Democrats are deliberately putting U.S. troops at risk.

"You would think that the President of the United States as commander-in-chief, who has just committed to us to our third war on his term, would have some concern for the men and women and their families who are serving America," Gingrich added. "But that's not the case."

According to the Department of Defense, a government shutdown would likely halt paychecks to the majority of military personnel, but those who are on active duty will be compensated once an agreement has been reached.

Gingrich is headlining Liberty University's "Awakening Conference," a two-day gathering which, according to the Lynchburg, Virginia school, will address such topics as "abortion, the economy, religious liberty, marriage and homosexuality, Sharia Law, the Middle East, Human Sex Trafficking, Reaching Minority Communities and Using New Media and Technology to Power a Movement."

Gingrich, who is seeking to burnish his credentials with the evangelical community as he mulls a presidential run, last appeared at the religious school founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell in October.

Wake up. The GOP spin machine is motion. There are more wheels within wheels than you think. "Reasonable" sounding comments are coming from numerous sources including the The Brain, Karl Rove. Why would he/they wait this late in the game to start spouting off? They know the score. A Tea Party shutdown is unavoidable and it is time cast blame.

Mr. Rove is trying to appear resonable, but don't forget his motives. Like Newt, Karl has a hard right agenda. His statement is the opening salvo in a convoluted spin to blame the shutdown on Obama. If a shutdown occurs, the days, weeks and months ahead will see the shutdown spun into a cynical plan by Obama to gain political advantage. This approach has a "win-win" payout if they play it right.

Bill Clinton enjoyed a long and steady climb in the polls after the 1995 shutdown that lasted up to and through the 1996 campaign. Rove wants to counteract such a momentum shift before it gains purchase. He's attempting to make the GOP appear "reasonable" at the eleventh hour. And that is the double edge.

If a shutdown occurs, it will be spun into an Obama plot just to score political points. They will play the victim.
If there is no shutdown, it will be spun into a victory for the GOTP as having saved the country from liberals.

Just watch. That is how it will play out.

I'm surprised that it took so long for Gingrich to trot out something like this. What do you expect? It's always the chicken-hawk cowards like him that start up with this garbage. Then again, Newt knows all about government shutdowns and who is to blame for them. Now go back to your trailer, put your tin-foil hat on, and run your mouth some more. Those of us with measureable IQs will continue to laugh at people like Gingrich and his ilk. .

Would you republicans and tea partiers just quit lying about everything. What ever is going on it is always President Obama's fault. It is you stupid knuckleheads that do not see the clear picture. Boehner, McConnel and Cantor really need to look in their closets. I am sure that it is full of crap. You tea partiers need to make sure that they do not cut education for your childrens sakes, because the adults are a lost cause, Bachman, Palin and Trump are good examples of not getting their education. Then you have the old people who believes anything that they are told. LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You gotta love it when the previous idiot that ran his [R] party into a wall is now cheering for the exact same thing to happen again. Remember the definition of insanity......

That our government and our economy is being held hostage by a few malignant politicians who were voted in by a bunch of genetically challanged Teatards is a travesty for our country.

Thanks Newt for coming out now to remind Americans how you and your partisan politicians are just as full of it today as you were the last time you irresponsibly shut down our government.

In the real world, your extreme ideologues are holding our service men & women hostage over social nonsense, that has nothing to do with budget! Enough.

Neither Gingrich or Trump can stay commented to their various wives let alone their own previous comments....why do you even repeat his hate speech. He caused the last government shutdown and was run out of washington on a rail...again why do you bother to cover him. Perhaps if he was not covered he would go home and try to make his latest marriage work. Truly repent for his sins and figure out how to HELP not further damage this country.

  13. The Situation

Newt, Newt. It's not the President that wants to shut down the government, it your dumb*** Repubs, mainly the Tea Baggers that wants to shut down the government and hold the troops hostage. You, Mr. Speaker should remember when the last time the Repubs pulled this stunt off back in 1995/96 what happen in the general election in 1996! You guys will pay for you lack of vision

Actually, it is not Obama but, rather the Republicans who are holding the military hostage. Let's face it, we've only had a government shutdown as a result of failed budget negotiations in Congress in the past two decades...and both times extremist Republicans who refused to negotiate were at the center of the problem. This time it was the Tea Party...last time it was Gingrich himself!!

The only thing the GOTP has done for troops over the past decade is sent them to wars, and closed down VA hospitals. Who in their right mind would start a war, ( excuse me, two wars ), and close VA hospitals? The GOTP.

  21. Politicians are Angels and Teachers are now Devils according to the gospel of GOP Tea Party

Here comes Republicans and the Gingrich-lemmings with their lies again....it's all President Obama's fault!

When are the republicans ever gonna take responsibility for their actions...passing a weekly budget for the entire United States is down-right despicable at best!

It's surprising the little ladys we have as congressmen can't do the jobs that they are elected to do...yet they are gonna get paid even when govt. shut down; that means they are getting paid for doing NO WORK!!!!!

This lying weasel is forgeting how the Tea Party radicals are holding America hostage over their need to block Planned Parenthood, the EPA, and NPR. Make no mistake, the Democrats met them in the middle and the Republicans keep changing the deal. The Tea Party openly states their desire to shut down the government. Even this liar can't distort that truth.

This stupid, assinine individual has a lot of nerve accusing anyone of putting our troops at risk considering the fiasco
of the Bush years, ie starting 2 wars, ill-equipping our troops, the private public buying them adequate boots, etc. because
of poor planning and stupidity. Don't want to talk about it? Too bad, they did it and what is worse, they take no
    responsibility.
As for the "budget" , The Senate passed UNANIMOUSLY a 'stand alone' bill that would prohibit Congress from
getting paid during a shut down. Unanimous means Republicans and Democrats. What did the House pubs do?
First, they would not allow this "clean" bill on the floor for a vote, then they added similar wording to their budget bill,
which they knew would not get passed, therefore, they will get PAID while everyone else has to
make sacrifices. Some had the audacity to say they needed the money. WTF, everybody needs their money, and
most are not millionaires like half the tea partiers are. You all need a new kind of "awakening" and it is called
    integrity!

Just where is Obama? Why isn't the President involved and burning the midnight oil? This reckless spending has to stop. We peons are all expected to tighten the belt, so should Government. All the millions misusing "Entitlement" programs are costing everyone. Planned Parenthood should be called Unplanned Parenthood. Can not afford to have children??!! Birth Control is cheap. May be that so many like the extra welfare bucks every month.

Here I thought NATO was now in charge of operations in Libya? He must mean the TWO wars his buddies Bush and Chaney committed us to and in which we are still mired. You know, Newt, every time you open your mouth to say something you feel is outrageous enough to enflame your base, you diminish yourself in the eyes of the rest of the nation. And you were always characterized as the "smart" one?
