Gingrich: Obama holding troops 'hostage' over budget

Washington (CNN) - Likely Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich Friday laid the blame of a possible government shutdown squarely on the feet of President Obama, saying the commander-in-chief is intentionally holding U.S. troops "hostage" so Democrats can prevail in the budget showdown.

"Let's be clear," Gingrich said during a speech at Liberty University Friday. "President Obama is deliberately seeking to hold the men and women in uniform hostage so the politicians can fight over the budget and use the threat of not paying the troops their weapon."

Gingrich's comments are in reference to the president's pledge Thursday to veto a Republican-backed spending bill that aimed to cut spending by $12 billion and fund the Pentagon for the remainder of the current fiscal year. The president and Democrats opposed the measure because of the programs it would cut, including a provision that would prevent Washington, DC taxpayer money to be used to fund abortion providers.

The president called the GOP bill a distraction while House Republicans said Democrats are deliberately putting U.S. troops at risk.

"You would think that the President of the United States as commander-in-chief, who has just committed to us to our third war on his term, would have some concern for the men and women and their families who are serving America," Gingrich added. "But that's not the case."

According to the Department of Defense, a government shutdown would likely halt paychecks to the majority of military personnel, but those who are on active duty will be compensated once an agreement has been reached.

Gingrich is headlining Liberty University's "Awakening Conference," a two-day gathering which, according to the Lynchburg, Virginia school, will address such topics as "abortion, the economy, religious liberty, marriage and homosexuality, Sharia Law, the Middle East, Human Sex Trafficking, Reaching Minority Communities and Using New Media and Technology to Power a Movement."

Gingrich, who is seeking to burnish his credentials with the evangelical community as he mulls a presidential run, last appeared at the religious school founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell in October.

Every word out of this man's mouth is either a grotesque distortion of the truth or an outright lie. How the Gods of Irony would let him stand up in front of a lecturn that says "Liberty University" and political games with the rights of women to choose whether or not to have an abortion, in order to pander to the "religious" conservative right that defines liberty and freedom as what they and their God say, is beyond comprehension.

Wingnuts lie whenever they open their pieholes. Newt knows that shutdowns kill the GOBP but he let them do it anyway.

This guy must be part spider ! The way he can spin a lie ! Turn it around where it seems that rather than the
republicans and teapartiers wanting to flex their muscles , it´s the Presidents fault for not caving in to the
far right demands ! America ! Are´nt you tired of being pushed around by these republican morons !

Obama is not holding troops hostage the Republicans are. I don't know why he is running , but president he will not be. The republican and tea party folks want to turn this country back a century where we work 14 hour days with no breaks, we die at our work station with no health care and then they through us on carts to be hauled off. I'm for balanced budgets but if companies like GE are not paying taxes what companies are? If the top doesn't pay taxes nothing will change. Do the republicans really want middle Americans living on the streets. Who are these loons that got elected? I know I didn't vote for them.

And Republicans are holding all American women hostage over the "budget". I guess it is ok to put fellow Americans in harm's way on the battlefield, and make sure they are paid, but wrong to provide low and moderate income women with inexpensive cancer screening.

If Gingrich, the poster boy for intolerence, greed and ideological self interest over the welfare of the American people said it, I guess it has to be true. LOL

The "Awakening Conference" will address such topics as "abortion, the economy, religious liberty, marriage and homosexuality, Sharia Law, the Middle East, Human Sex Trafficking, Reaching Minority Communities and Using New Media and Technology to Power a Movement."

Infidelity is noticeably absent from that list. I would think Newt would address this given his vast experience on the subject. Or will that be covered in the "marriage and homosexuality" segment? So those in the Tea Party can understand the reference, I'm saying he's gay.

Not gonna work Newt. Anyone with half a brain knows the deal, and YOU trying to capitalize on the ignorance of most Americans aint gonna work.
NO... how bout ALL these politicians forfeit their salaries to pay all of our soldiers for putting their lives on the line.
How bout Newt not resort to the typical Republican playbook of being the first to cast blame, and make it out like its the Dem's (much less Obama) "holding troops hostage". Gimme a break. This swipe was lame and wreaking of desperation.

Good try Newty.. but we know WHO you are and WHAT you are all about..

MATTER OF FACT.. werent you commanding the ship LAST TIME the gov shut down?
If I were you.. I wouldnt go throwing stones...

So, in a government shutdown, the poeple who forced the shutdown still get paid? Legislative/Executive branches still get paid ... the people getting shot at and their families, living on less than if their spouses where home and employed, must suffer......
Democrat – Republican .... Shame on you ... bring some of those marines home and let them put the budget together while you politicians go over and get shot at.....

Is it really that difficult to pass a military pay act that is independent of any partisan add-ons? Republican hands are no cleaner in this mess as they knew fully well what they were doing when they attached the Pentagon appropriations to ideological issues that had no chance of Democratic support.

Why does this man even get coverage? He is so out of touch with the real world. The Republicans seem to think they can tell lies and every tall tale they can dream up to blame the Democrats for this situation. Do they really believe the American Public will "just believe" because they say so? They don't give a hoot about this country – they use the military the same way they wrap the American Flag around themselves – if they have a flag pin in their lapel then they MUST be patriotic. If Republicans really care about the people of this country then they would be agreeing to a compromise instead of trying to put a spin on everything. Listen up people, they are counting on you to not check their facts – hey they are waving the flag and protecting the military – but what about the rest of the people who won't get checks with the shut down? What impact do you think this will have on the economy?

  22. Name king

Gingrich Obama had said to send him a clean military bill to pay soldiers but you guys choose to pack the bill with 12 billion dollar spending cuts and a load of social issues to be cut. I hope the senate hurry up and send the house a clean soldier bill to the house, with nothing deceptive attached to it, and let me see how much the repugs loves our troops. The American public won't be fooled by these Donald trump tactics.

  23. ThinkAgain

Let's be clear: Newt Gingrich shut down the federal government in 1995 because he felt "snubbed" by not being asked to sit at the front of the plane with President Clinton on the flight to attend assassinated Israeli leader Yitzhak Rabin's funeral in Israel.

That's right: Gingrich shut down the government because he had a hissy fit.

Gingrich also led the fight to impeach President Clinton for having an affair – while at the same time, Gingrich (Mr. Family Values himself) was having an affair.

Plain and Simple: Gingrich is once again playing politics to the detriment of our country.

And he should be ASHAMED of himself!

Wrong as usual, you skirt chasing, lying, ignorant, hypocritical, waste of protoplasm. The ones holding the troops hostage are once again the Greed Over People party. If they want to fund the troops, which they should, they should tackle that and only that, not try to sneak in another 12B in ideological cuts. Newtered = Whiskey Delta. Not fooling anyone with a shred of intelligence. We all remember who was responsible for the last shutdown Newtie....and your party is repeating history. Elections have consequences, GOP!!!
