Charleston, South Carolina (CNN) – Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour won a presidential straw poll in the pivotal early primary state of South Carolina on Friday night.
The straw poll was conducted by the Charleston County Republican Party at its annual convention. Barbour, fresh off a trip to the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire, was the only potential 2012 candidate to address the crowd of nearly 200 GOP activists.
Washington (CNN)- President Obama surprised a group of young environmental organizers Friday during what they thought was just a meeting with White House staffers about energy policy.
"We went in thinking we were meeting with senior staff and there walked in Barack Obama," said Courtney Hight, co-director of Energy Action Coalition, "We got to share with him what we care about."
(CNN)-Hundreds of local Tea Party groups will join the Tea Party Express as co-sponsors in the first-ever Tea Party Presidential Debate, held in partnership with CNN, according to Amy Kremer, Chairman of the Tea Party Express.

(CNN) – More than a week after polls closed in the race for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, final results from all 72 counties still don't provide a clear picture of a winner, state officials said Friday.
According to the state's Government Accountability Board, Justice David T. Prosser beat JoAnne F. Kloppenburg by 7,316 votes, but with a margin of only 0.488%, Kloppenburg can request a partial or full recount without having to pay a filing fee. She has three business days to do so.
WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama signed the budget agreement covering federal spending for the remainder of the current fiscal year on Friday, an administration official said, bringing an end to any remaining fears of a government shutdown.
The bipartisan deal, which won approval Thursday from both the House and Senate, cuts $38.5 billion in spending while funding the government through September 30.
Washington (CNN)- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney celebrated traditional Tax Day by penning an opinion piece for the Orlando Sentinel. It's an unlikely coincidence that the commentary appears in a daily newspaper distributed in one of the most influential states in presidential politics.
But are overtures in Romney's column toward the Tea Party movement, which has turned the traditional deadline to submit federal tax filings into a nationwide opportunity to demonstrate, also a well-timed coincidence?
Washington (CNN)- Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will reunite with an old flame…in TV land. Tina Fey announced Thursday, on NPR's "The Leonard Lopate Show," that the Stanford University political science professor will make her star turn in an upcoming episode.
Jack Donaghy (played by Alec Baldwin) name-dropped Rice as his ex-girlfriend throughout the first season of NBC's "30 Rock" and it appears she will debut in "a couple weeks" as the fictional executive's former flame.
Washington (CNN) - A source associated with Jon Huntsman's potential campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is brushing off a newly revealed letter from the outgoing U.S. ambassador to China that praises President Barack Obama as a "remarkable leader."
The letter, acquired by the conservative media website The Daily Caller from an unnamed source, was handwritten by Huntsman on August 16, 2009.
Washington (CNN) – It shouldn't be any surprise that two of the three states President Barack Obama visits next week are battleground states.
According to a White House release Friday, the president will travel to northern Virginia Tuesday to hold a town hall. Obama won the state in 2008, the first Democrat to carry Virginia in a presidential election since 1964. With an open Senate seat to defend as well, Virginia is a crucial state for Democrats in 2012.
Washington (CNN) – Developer and reality show host Donald Trump has been pushing the claim that President Obama was not born in the U.S. - a myth that has dogged the president since he took office. But everything changed on April 27.
Why? Obama released his original birth certificate. At a press conference at the White House, Obama said the controversy surrounding the issue had become a "sideshow" and that "we do not have time for this kind of silliness. We’ve got better stuff to do."

Speaking in New Hampshire on the same day, Trump said that he is "very proud of myself" on getting Obama to release it. But he adds, "I want to look at it but I hope it's true"
CNN has investigated the 'birther claims' and here are the key points:
Certificate of live birth
The Obama team and the state of Hawaii released a certification of live birth, which documents the president’s birth on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu. This is not the original birth certificate. In Hawaii and other states, original birth certificates are not released when requested later.
