Washington (CNN) – Mike Huckabee is coming to the defense of potential GOP-presidential rival Donald Trump following criticism of the billionaire's stances on taxes and spending by the conservative Club for Growth.
The Republican anti-spending group condemned Trump on Monday for his past endorsement of universal healthcare and proposal to raise taxes on Chinese imports.
Huckabee, the former presidential candidate and current Fox News host who has said he is thinking about running another campaign, said he remembers when the organization made similar attacks against him in 2008.
"According to that group, I'm also a tax-loving socialist. During the 2008 election they cherry-picked some factoids out of context from the deals I had to make from a ninety percent Democratic Arkansas legislature," Huckabee said in his daily radio commentary.
Huckabee also criticized the organization for being so focused on cutting taxes.
"I never understood when it became a mark of conservatism to run up debt on your children's credit card instead of biting the bullet and paying your own bills," Huckabee said.
Huckabee clarified that his defense of Trump should not be confused as an endorsement but vowed to study the real-state mogul's full resume instead of taking Club for Growth's "word for it."
"Under their criteria the things that Ronald Reagan had to do as governor and as president probably would have made him a tax-loving socialist unfit for the White House as well," Huckabee said.
The Club for Growth posted Huckabee's radio commentary under the tag, "Crazy Liberals."
Trump is scoring high in the polls because he's telling the TEA PARTY folks just what they want to hear. All you have to do with them is to go negative on Obama, and it's been proven that it doesn't even have to be factual, and they LOVE you! Look at Herman Cain and Al West..they even were able to overlook the fact these guys were black because they slammed Obama. The Tea Party is very limited when it comes to governing, they have so far proven that and look who their leaders are, Bachmann, Palin, that says it ALL. Trump is playing these loons like a fiddle but it just might catch up with him in the end. Personally I hope it DOSEN'T!
"If they deem their tax spending too little because their other spending is too high, well you just need to learn to live on less because the rights of the government to your money come first. Welcome to the commune Comrades."
No matter how you loudly, frequently, repetetively or fervently you rail against reality, it still comes down to this: only a moron with ulterior motives would pass massive trillion dollar tax cuts WITHOUT DECREASING SPENDING FIRST. You want to pretend to be fiscally sophisticated and suave? Explain to the class why and on which planet it makes sense to do it backwards...barring that the only reason you're really doing it is to set up the current problems we're having in the first place so you can argue for more tax cuts, jsutifying it with more trickle-down idiocy that posits we should keep doing it again and again until it magically works.
It might have been possible to get a worse picture of Mike Huckabee if you had tried a little harder.
the GOP continues to implode! the Tea Party! the evangelicals! the reality tv stars running for office, oh my!
All the Club for Growth cares about is the growth of their bank accounts at the expense of our nation and her people.
BTW, the Ryan budget proposal cuts spending in those areas the GOP doesn't like on ideological grounds (such as Women, Infants and Children WIC, Medicare, unemployment benefits, Medicaid, EPA, etc., etc.) and makes the Bush tax cuts (that primarily benefit millionaires and billionaires), which actually ADDS to the deficit.
Only a FOOL thinks the Club for Growth or the GOP cares about anyone but their own greedy selves ...
Again, Mike (Elmer Gantry) Huckabee, lays his soul at the feet of the rich and powerful.
No news here.
