Trump won't release tax info unless Obama provides birth certificate

Washington (CNN) - If Donald Trump runs for president, he says he won't release his tax returns unless President Obama releases his birth certificate.

The latest attention-grabbing sound bite from the media mogul came in an interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos Tuesday, during which Trump was decidedly non-committal on what his policy toward tax disclosure will be. A presidential candidate is not required by election law to disclose tax returns, though most voluntarily do.

Poll: More Americans favor same-sex marriage

(CNN) – Support for same-sex marriage has received a boost, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research survey released Tuesday.

The poll indicates that more than half of all Americans believe that marriages between gay or lesbian couples should be legally valid. With 51 percent of respondents saying that same-sex marriages should be legal, it is the first time that a CNN poll has found majority support for same-sex marriage.

Harpootlian assesses the 2012 Republican field

(CNN) – With Republicans controlling almost every lever of government in South Carolina, Democrats are left with a shallow bench of leaders able to respond to the field of GOP presidential candidates dropping into the early primary state hunting for votes.

This is where Dick Harpootlian comes in. The former state Democratic Party chairman, who presided over the election of South Carolina's last Democratic governor in 1998 and has close ties to the Obama White House, is now seeking his old job back.

Boehner hires top lawyer for fight over marriage law, sources say

Washington (CNN) – House Republicans have hired a prominent conservative attorney to defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act in a pending lawsuit, legal sources say, and will make an effort to divert money from the Justice Department to fund its high-profile fight.

House Speaker John Boehner disclosed the legal and political strategy in a letter Monday to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. The Obama administration, which normally would defend federal laws in judicial disputes, announced last month it believed the Defense of Marriage Act, often referred to as DOMA, to be unconstitutional. The law defines marriage for federal purposes as unions only between a man and woman.

Commentary: Is Trump playing us for suckers?

,

(CNN) – The disappointing thing about most phonies is that they don't have staying power. Once they get caught, they give it up and skulk off into the night, never to be heard from again. Think of Rosie Ruiz, say, who pretended to win the Boston Marathon by sneaking out of a crowd of bystanders ahead of everybody in the last half-mile of the race.

That's why I like Donald Trump so much. When it comes to pretending to run marathons, he never quits.

Poll shows GOP not happy with its prez candidates

Washington (CNN) - As the Republican presidential primary race continues its slow march out of the gate, a new poll suggests likely GOP voters are significantly less satisfied with the potential field of contenders than they were four years ago.

Less than 50 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents give positive marks to the still-in-flux GOP presidential field, down markedly from 2008 when nearly two-thirds said they were happy with that cycle's crop of candidates, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll.
