Fact check: Trump's voting record

NEW YORK (CNN) – Donald Trump's affirmation that he's voted in every general election disagrees with actual voting records, according to a spokeswoman with the New York City Board of Elections.

“I voted in every general election,” Trump told CNN affiliate NY1 by phone Friday. “I have records that I voted and so does the Board of Elections. … I signed in at every election.”

However, voting records obtained by the board of elections show that Trump did not vote in the 2002 general election, according to Valerie L. Vazquez, director of communications at the board.

The records also show that Trump skipped at least three presidential primaries and two mayoral primaries over the past 25 years, Vazquez said Friday.

Vazquez has found voting records by Trump for only two party primaries – the 1989 GOP mayoral primary and last year’s GOP primary for several statewide races, including governor and U.S. Senate.

Vazquez said she was able to obtain the voting records using both Trump’s voting bus cards, used prior to 1992 to document a voter’s activity, as well as through the BOE's electronic records database, used from 1992 to the present. Both the bus cards and electronic records provide the ballot time and whether it was cast on site or by absentee vote. Records also showed Trump has changed his party registration three times over the past 20 years.

Vazquez was confident that her records are complete, saying there is not a loophole that would hide a possible vote.

But when asked by NY1 Friday about the discrepancy presented by information from the election board and his claim, Trump said, "You're going to pay a big price because you're wrong."

A call to Trump for comment was not immediately returned.

CNN's Susan Candiotti contributed to this report.

Trump is not only clueless but a liar as well ! Doesn't he know that thing's like this can easily be checked out ? This is further evidence that Donald Chump is playing everyone for sucker's he is just trying to get publicity for himself ! There is no way that he could withstand the scrutiny of an election cycle !

What were Obama's qualifications for President ... 20 years in Wright's church? ... radical friends, like Ayers? ... voting present 125 times in the Senate? ... Zero business experience? ... and yet you fools worship Obama, while criticizing a self-made billionaire, who has created countless jobs, loves America, and would be a thousand times better at fixing our economy than the empty suit, Obama !!!

Not a Trump supporter by any means but this article is a lie wrapped in half-truth.
Primaries are not general elections. The investigator didn't find Trump lying, the lying is coming from those who are trying to say that primaries are general elections so as to make it appear that Trump is lying.

CNN...oh the depths to which you have fallen...

Whether I like Trump or not, this is misleading. A general election and a primary election are two different things. His statement revolved around general elections, not primaries. Poor attempt to skew facts.

Donald Trump skipped primary elections...a lot of people do that. I could never vote in the Primaries when I became Constitution Party member, because I wasn't allowed to do that. Be that as it may be...Obama had a scanty voting record when in the Senate, choosing to No Vote, rather than vote on at least 12 important issues. Obama fails to show the public his Certified Certificate of Live Birth, so we're all happy that he could have been born in the USA. So far, no document has been shown which states, his place of Birth (Which Hospital?), or the Doctor who delivered him (???). Flakey to say the least. At least we know Trump is a United States born citizen and is still qualified to run as President....Not a Kenyan Born Nationalist, touting himself as a United States Citizen....if I'm wrong...prove it...as Trump would say.

why don't you just run your business. We know you never be president. Stop instigating trouble with the Birther issue because you are truly showing your true colors. Why don't you come out publicly and say I do not like our president instead of being obsessed to find out where he was born. You are really showing you true arrogance and you have no place in our political system because you do have the intelligence and charisma. I think your birther issue will be the down fall of your party which ever you belong to Republican or the Tea Party Republicans. You sure do act like a Tea Party member. We know everyone does not vote in every election. If Trump did not vote in every election, it isn't earth shattering. But why would he state that he voted in every one if it is not true? He is inviting people to question his every comment. Because he is so conceited (understatement, understatement), he should be aware that is also why every word out of his mouth will be suspect. It is difficult to believe he is naive, but maybe in politics he is. Maybe he just likes to argue too. He seems to be attacking people ridiculously so in his own party. If he thinks everything out of his mouth is entertainment - whether it is right or wrong - he is greatly mistaken.

Dude, you need a haircut. It isn't 1983 any more. Plus, do you really think that bragging and hinting at how much money you are worth is going to endear you to people who care about voting in a candidate that will be able to steer our country through all of its problems? And I'm not talking about figuring out ways to scam money from foreign heads of state.

I am anticipating some type of segue from Newt's reason for infidelity was due to the fact his "patriotism" gave him a woody to something equally shallow and moronic from Trump, like every time he closes the curtain to the voting booth, that reminds him of the porn shop booth he frequents and he doesn't vote 'cuz he doesn't want to leave the voting booth with the stain he does when he leaves the porn booth.

Donald Trump is an egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot. If he was set up in the White House, nothing would EVER get done because he'd be so busy running his egotistical, lying, hypocritical mouth. I think he does this simply because it's who he is, but also because he has no real ideas or solutions of substance, so he skips those important topics and focuses instead on what he likes to focus on best....himself. And how is this self-absorbed, loud-mouthed, issue flip-flopping hypocrite who wears a creature of unknown origin on his head supposed to represent the average American? What we know about The Donald is that he perceives that he's enormously wealthy (he harps on it continuously, so I guess we're supposed to be impressed). He's also been enormously bankrupt. He has a history of marrying, cheating, divorcing – multiple times. He's a terrible speaker, as will quickly be obvious should he actually get to a point of participating in any debates. Now THOSE I'll watch – strictly for entertainment.

Failing to vote in a primary does not disqualify The Donald from being a viable candidate for the POTUS, however, he has plenty of other deficiencies that do. He, like others before him (Ross Perot comes to mind), have no real political bent and are usually too arrogant to listen to wiser heads when campaign glitches inevitably arise. The Trumps of this world are like a civilian version of a military general who thinks people following orders is the same as people following a leader.

He lies like a rug, makes his money by welching on debts, has no clue about what to do about China, Iraq, Libya etc., and he is a bald headed narcissist. Who is going to vote for him?

And people really want him for president? Hes a gimmick that will fade. Unfortunately running the country like a business will only serve the people on top (The ceos) and those on the bottom (Work force) will be screwed. There may be issues with those we have in there right now, but trump would make it worse.

So here is a question, say you did something like Trump says he did and records say otherwise, and say you can prove your case now as to what does that say for the records. It's like most people always believe one side, much like a jury covicting a person for a crime only later to find out through DNA that person did not commit the crime. My point, don't always rush to conclusion, carefully check the evidence as to both sides.

For all of you calling this "democrat propoganda" by CNN -

RELAX. Its a NEWS story, and CNN isn't the only one to report on it. It is the job of the press to fill in the public on potentially important issues – like when a candidate has LIED, etc. If they hadn't reported on it, THAT would be bias since they would be purposefully not revealing information that people may find important (especially given Donald Trump's firm Birther position – you would expect him to not lie himself).

So no, this isn't "democrat / liberal media propaganda". If it were false and CNN had been the only one to report on it, maybe you'd have a SMALL point. Even then they could have just been factually off-base. But, at present, they are reporting something other media outlets have and seem to have evidence to support their claim.

    Fact check: Trump's voting record
    By: CNN's Nina Golgowski

Surely CNN's Nina Golgowski knows the difference between a Primary and a general election? I would hope so if she were writing a "fact check" "article" about them. This is a horribly researched propaganda attempt by CNN. If trump has never missed a general election then he didn't lie. The guy is crazy but this "article" is bullpooey.

Damn people, read the article before posting. It clearly states "voting records obtained by the board of elections show that Trump did not vote in the 2002 general election". So he said he did, so he either lied or should check his own record before making statements.

If I don't like the candidate of my party's choosing – I won't vote. If I did, I'd have to vote for the other party's candidate, which I certainly don't want to do. So, by not voting, I took my vote from one guy, but had I voted, I would have taken his vote away and added on for the other guy. Not voting is a voting decision, and by itself does represent a vote.

You are something else, CNN. I see you are already campaigning for Obama. You are attacking Donald Trump under the assumption he will be running for president. It would have been nice if you had revealed all of the lies from the Obama campaign in 2007 and 2008 as well as the lies from the Obama administration in the last 2 years. Obviously you are a liberal news organization interested only in re-electing a Democrat.

For all those saying primaries are not general elections...you're right. Trump is a true representative of his Party. The GOP. He has learned to cheat and lie in his Business dealings and understands that politics is also a game to be played. Obviously most of you can't read. The article clearly says that he did not vote in the 2002 GENERAL ELECTION which is in conflict with his assertion. There is additional discussion on primaries, but the 2002 election issue is still a discrepancy from Trump's assertions. I have voted in every general election since 1972, sometimes absentee when a business trip took me away from home on election day. Its not that hard to do and Trump is going to have to learn to be a little bit less loose with facts. Additionally, for those of you who think he is a self-made man, do some research. His father left about a half billion dollar estate when he died.

It is amzaing how many people are so desperate to bash CNN that they just reveal themselves to be unable to read. There are at least a dozen posters who accuse CNN of being liars (or Democratic propaganda) based on the claim that (in the words of one poster) primaries " are not general elections," and therefore that "his statement is true as stated." The article very clearly stated that in additional to missing multiple primaries, he also missed at least one general election. If you are going to bash an article, take the time to read it.

And for all those who say, "who cares, lots of people skip some elections," the big deal isn't that he missed an election, it is that he very clearly and repeatedly lied about it. This seems to be a personality trait of Trump – he makes bold definitive statements that turn out to be true. That does not seem very presidential, and he deserves to be called out for it.

The real Donald Trump and candidate Donald Trump seem to be two different people. The candidate continually lets us know about all of his virtues, his love of country, and his contributions to the country. The real Donald Trump would like us to believe he has proof to back all his statements. Unfortunately he does not.

The media is doing their job. They are trying to ascertain what Donald Trump has done in relation to what he says he has done. If it becomes more and more evident that Mr. Trump has a vision of himself that does not match the records so be it. In the end it is Mr. Trump's responsibility to be truthful and honest.

Not a Trump supporter either, but what's so bad about changing party registrations a few times? That just shows he's a moderate and has his own mind, doesn't follow the "party rhetoric" blindly, whatever his reasons might be. This is America, people are allowed to vote for whomever they want to.

And yeah I agree with the people who point out primaries are not general elections. Those were my thoughts as well. It does say he didn't vote at all in 2002, but maybe he had a good reason? or maybe he sent in an absentee ballott and it was late, or something like that.

    Petty article, I agree.

But I reiterate, I am not a Trump supporter–I think he sorely lacks the diplomacy necessary to be a good President. He's already had his foot in his mouth several times now and the campaigning hasn't even really begun.

No surprise here – he's all bluster & no substance. This man is so incredibly arrogant, bellicose – a bully really, full of himself. Can one imagine how he'd deal with a delicate world situation – he'd say "Nuke 'em" just as easy as he says "Your fired!" Instead of logic and intelligence, he substitutes tough talk & talks fast & loud... used car salesman (no offense to those who are in that profession) is what I'm reminded of when I hear him speak. If he were to be actually elected President (which there is no figuring the lack of intelligence or real contemplative thought capacity of the American Voter), I think I'd just puke and stop voting ever again. Are we really this shallow in this county? This stupid? Really??? We have the government we deserve – dysfunctional and incapable of living within it's means, BECAUSE... this describes many Americans right now. Is it a wonder when "politicians" perform the antics they do? Americans need to turn off the television, open some books, periodicals (and no, not the swim suit edition of Sports Illus), get informed about issues/policy and the "debate" and stop voting these fools into office.

Missing 3 presidential primaries, 2 mayoral primaries and no general election in 25 years is a pretty darn good voting record if you ask me... Its funny how people just jump on the tone of the article and call Trump a liar when he said nothing about primaries. Puppets on a string.

Opon his death, he will most likely be ABANDONDED by God and Christ as he is THEE MOST MATERIALISTIC, PRIDEFUL, man that has EVER walked this earth.!.

Trump cares about NO ONE but himself. He is a greedy, Narcissist.

Donald Trump, I have NO DOUBT that when God ends your life, he will cast your soul into the BOWELS of HELL.

Is this the best they can dig up on him? Come on, in a country where organizations like ACORN can register convicted felons and dead people to vote are we to believe that records are accurately kept? PU-LEASE! Surely the Donald has more skeletons in his closet that this!

To those who think this is trivial: why did you read about it? If it is not newsworthy, you should have ignored it.

Maybe it does not rank up there with economic issues or foreign policy or such, but it is telling that he made this claim (voted in all general elections) and when presented with evidence (not voting in the 2002 general election) he did not acknowledge his error; instead he threatened people.

It is not a big deal that he skipped the 2002 election. It is not a big deal he made a generalization about voting that was not 100% accurate. But it is a bit troublesome that he reacted the way he did. If I made such a claim and the board of elections presented evidence to the contrary, I might want to investigate further, but I would not tell them that they would "pay a big price" for their actions.

If he would lie about his voting record imagine what else he would lie about to preserve his self image.
He might be good for NY politics but on the national stage he is not qualified to hold office.

OK, people, you need to read more carefully. In the second paragraph, it quotes DT as saying, “I voted in every general election.” In the third paragraph, it says that records show that "Trump did not vote in the 2002 general election." The information about him skipping some primaries (fourth paragraph) is added as additonal info. The claim that he is either mistaken or lying is based only on his having missed the 2002 general election. The reporter is not trying to say that primary elections are the same as general elections. Sheesh... maybe if people would read more carefully, there would be less pointless comments...

ww, They register the fact you have voted to keep you from voting multple times in the same election. Plus if you haven't voted in a while they take you off of the list of registered voters.

After viewing further comments, without naming names, there is a really telling post from someone who – after going into a rather irrational/illogical hate-filled, factually devoid tyrade about Obama – misnaming his "Osama, Ooops Obama" (typical name-calling banter from low information persons) finishes up with a, very comical, "LOL, have a blessed Easter". I'm Not a Christian, but – wouldn't Jesus, about whom that holiday is about – his teachings of "love one another as you love yourselves", "he without sins... cast the first stone", wouldn't Jesus be a little disturbed at your vitriol? It is such hypocrisy, for people to profess a particular faith – then proceed to act completely OPPOSITE the teachings of that faith. I call such persons, "Christians of Convenience". Such folks should really take a long look at themselves in the mirror. What are you really angry about? This kind of hatred is sucking the life out of this country, and is not healthy.

I find it both amusing and insulting that the media is fact-checking every single word spoken by Donald Trump. Funny how they never did this with president Urkel in 2008. This can only mean one thing: that the media is somehow threatened by Mr. Trump at making Obama look stupid – which shouldn't be too hard. After all, Obama won't be running on his record, because his record in the last two and a half years is dismal.

Wow! It's amazing how many of you completely MISREAD the article. The third paragraph clearly states, "However, voting records obtained by the board of elections show that Trump did not vote in the 2002 general election, according to Valerie L. Vazquez, director of communications at the board." In other words, Donald Trump is a LIAR.

I am not a fan of the Donald or the GOP but seriously, this story showcases what is wrong with politics and media. So what if he didn't vote. That is his choice and his right to exercise. It does not make him a bad person or incompetent. 99.9% of the American public could not recite their voting record verbatim over the past 25 years either.

Yo, Jim. The article clearly says that Trump did not vote in the 2002 GENERAL ELECTION, and then goes on to add that he missed some primaries as well. I take it that reading comprehension was not a major emphasis where you went to school.

Trump is looking more like a butt-head everyday. And now for his latest lie.....Obama's grandparents forged his birth certificate so they could collect food stamps? Really? Really?? So if I understand this correctly, CNN can easily find obscure voting records from NY primaries, but Barrys birth certificate is still among the missing? More amazing than this, is the number of people who fail to see the irony.
I'm far more interested in knowing why a sitting US president would spend millions evading something so basic (showing an actual legal birth certificate), I couldn't register my children to attend school, or even play little league sports without one, but somehow you can register with an election board to run for president and simply say.... Ummmm yes I was born here?
I'm not a Trumo supporter but the hypochrisy on these message boards amaze me. Keep drinking the Obama Kool-aid folks.

Well, how many people skip the primary elections or even mayoral races? I know I have and guess what, I don't give a care. Not being arrogant, it's just a fact. Some years I didn't care for the candidate in my (former) party and most states use the closed primary which means that you can't split your ticket. If you're a swing voter like me, the primaries aren't that interesting and, personally, when the commercials stop, I breathe easier knowing the attack ads are gone for a few months.

Yes, I know that sometimes there are proposals on the primary ballot. They just aren't that interesting as the more vital proposals should be on the general election ballot. It would take a very vital proposal to get me to come out and vote...even if the sore losers challenge the vote.

"Trump did not vote in the 2002 general election." A general election is a general election. People who want to believe Trump, or people who want to disbelieve CNN, simply didn't register this piece of information. Good example of Selective Perception, people process only the information that already supports their beliefs.

Wow, come on. I have no interest in voting for Trump whatsoever, let alone any Republican, but this is so unimportant as to be an embarrassment for any news agency willing to waste front page space with this nonsense. That voting record looks pretty damn good to me. They went back over 20 years and found a couple votes he missed in the list of all the general elections (including off-years) and primaries he was eligible to vote in. I try to vote in every election but sometimes the importance of a particular election is outweighed by responsibilities that get in the way. I am proud of how consistently I go to the polls and vote and I would say it looks very similar to Trumps record. There are a lot better reasons to not consider Trump than this.

Why is this news? Did anyone expect a blabbering birther to have actually voted on a consistent basis? Ranting and pandering take up so much time that voting is a low priority. Not to worry, by November 2012 the GOP will be so fragmented that the Green Party will be the closest challenger to the Dems who will continue for another four years with Obama in the White House.

I guess the Donald can't produce his own records, so he should stop worrying about the President, and start being factual about his own. Has America sunk so low, that Donald Trump is even being talked about as Presidential material.
For the poster that said what is the big deal that he hasn't voted in ever general election, no one has. I have, and I'm 51 years old, my father has and he is 76. Voting is a right and every American should take advantage of that right. I would guess milllions of Americans can say the same thing I just did, and be proud of the fact that they did vote in every election. If it's not important, why did he lie about it.
