Fact check: Trump's voting record

NEW YORK (CNN) – Donald Trump's affirmation that he's voted in every general election disagrees with actual voting records, according to a spokeswoman with the New York City Board of Elections.

“I voted in every general election,” Trump told CNN affiliate NY1 by phone Friday. “I have records that I voted and so does the Board of Elections. … I signed in at every election.”

However, voting records obtained by the board of elections show that Trump did not vote in the 2002 general election, according to Valerie L. Vazquez, director of communications at the board.

The records also show that Trump skipped at least three presidential primaries and two mayoral primaries over the past 25 years, Vazquez said Friday.

Vazquez has found voting records by Trump for only two party primaries – the 1989 GOP mayoral primary and last year’s GOP primary for several statewide races, including governor and U.S. Senate.

Vazquez said she was able to obtain the voting records using both Trump’s voting bus cards, used prior to 1992 to document a voter’s activity, as well as through the BOE's electronic records database, used from 1992 to the present. Both the bus cards and electronic records provide the ballot time and whether it was cast on site or by absentee vote. Records also showed Trump has changed his party registration three times over the past 20 years.

Vazquez was confident that her records are complete, saying there is not a loophole that would hide a possible vote.

But when asked by NY1 Friday about the discrepancy presented by information from the election board and his claim, Trump said, "You're going to pay a big price because you're wrong."

A call to Trump for comment was not immediately returned.

CNN's Susan Candiotti contributed to this report.

SO what he doesn't have to vote if he doesn't like the candidates. I never vote until 2008 cause I didn't think BO can do the job but still some dummies voted him in to get us in to this mess.

Primaries are not general elections. They are "in closed primary states" taxpayer funded private elections only open to party members. Let the parties pick up the costs for their own elections! I can't participate, therefore, I should not be forced to fund these activities

This is a crazy article. Trump is talking about voting in the GENERAL ELECTIONS, while the big complaint in this article is that he skipped some PRIMARY ELECTIONS! Does the author of this piece not even know the difference? Good God!

I don't think a primary counts as a General Election. But, oh we must try to deface the evil Trumpster, he hath made a mockery of our exalted one.
Why don't you all do some serious reporting at CNN. Go back and cover Obama's votes while in the Illinois Senate.
How many votes did he miss or only vote present on ?

Is there a reason we should care whether Trump has voted or not?

Trump should produce documentation that he voted in every general election he was eligible for. Unless I see the long form for his voting record, I will not consider voting for him.

why don't you just run your business. We know you never be president. Stop instigating trouble with the Birther issue because you are truly showing your true colors. Why don't you come out publicly and say I do not like our president instead of being obsessed to find out where he was born. You are really showing you true arrogance and you have no place in our political system because you do have the intelligence and charisma. I think your birther issue will be the down fall of your party which ever you belong to Republican or the Tea Party Republicans. You sure do act like a Tea Party member. Look at your voting records, its speaks for itself.

We know everyone does not vote in every election. If Trump did not vote in every election, it isn't earth shattering. But why would he state that he voted in every one if it is not true? He is inviting people to question his every comment. Because he is so conceited (understatement, understatement), he should be aware that is also why every word out of his mouth will be suspect. It is difficult to believe he is naive, but maybe in politics he is. Maybe he just likes to argue too. He seems to be attacking people ridiculously so in his own party. If he thinks everything out of his mouth is entertainment - whether it is right or wrong - he is greatly mistaken.

Dude, you need a haircut. It isn't 1983 any more. Plus, do you really think that bragging and hinting at how much money you are worth is going to endear you to people who care about voting in a candidate that will be able to steer our country through all of its problems? And I'm not talking about figuring out ways to scam money from foreign heads of state.

I am anticipating some type of segue from Newt's reason for infidelity was due to the fact his "patriotism" gave him a woody to something equally shallow and moronic from Trump, like every time he closes the curtain to the voting booth, that reminds him of the porn shop booth he frequents and he doesn't vote 'cuz he doesn't want to leave the voting booth with the stain he does when he leaves the porn booth.

Donald Trump is an egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot. If he was set up in the White House, nothing would EVER get done because he'd be so busy running his egotistical, lying, hypocritical mouth. I think he does this simply because it's who he is, but also because he has no real ideas or solutions of substance, so he skips those important topics and focuses instead on what he likes to focus on best....himself. And how is this self-absorbed, loud-mouthed, issue flip-flopping hypocrite who wears a creature of unknown origin on his head supposed to represent the average American? What we know about The Donald is that he perceives that he's enormously wealthy (he harps on it continuously, so I guess we're supposed to be impressed). He's also been enormously bankrupt. He has a history of marrying, cheating, divorcing – multiple times. He's a terrible speaker, as will quickly be obvious should he actually get to a point of participating in any debates. Now THOSE I'll watch – strictly for entertainment.

Ok, CNN, we got it a long time ago even without your “stories”! Trump is an IDIOT and not fit to be even considered running or voting for in 2012! So please stop running every 5 minutes a story about him giving him free advertising! You’re covering of Palin and the rest of that crowed is/was annoying enough! Complete waste of time! Please, do not get so foxy!

eh, Nina Golgowski does realize that a PRIMARY election is different from a GENERAL election, right? Trump may very well be right in what he said... a PRIMARY election is to choose a parties' candidate for the upcoming GENERAL election, where multiple parties are represented...
