Pawlenty calls for action on Syria

Washington (CNN) - Likely Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty said Friday that the White House should push for a special meeting of the U.N. Security Council amid the Syrian government’s crackdown on protesters.

Pawlenty issued the statement shortly after President Obama called out Syrian President Bashar al-Assad by name, and accused him of "seeking Iranian assistance in repressing Syria's citizens through the same brutal tactics that have been used by his Iranian allies."

Pawlenty repeated his call for Obama to recall the U.S. ambassador to Syria, and invoke additional economic sanctions against the country.

"The United States must send a clear and strong signal to the people of Syria that we support their drive towards freedom and getting rid of the Assad regime," he said.

The former Minnesota governor accused the Obama administration last month of "naivety" for its approach to Syria. Friday's statement stopped short of overtly criticizing the White House approach, but noted it was Obama who sent the ambassador to Damascus.

Obama returned an ambassador to Syria in 2009, four years after the United States withdrew its envoy in protest over the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Oh, how desperate these Republicans are. They are trying to goad the President into another war just so they can curcify him. The more that the economy improves and the small steps that the Country makes the more desperate the GOP becomes. President Obama inheireted a horrible mess from the previous administration. I can only imagine where we would be had McCain and Palin won. McCain was running around like a chicken with its head cut off and Palin has only half a brain. While I admire the job that Hillary Clinton is doing, you must understand that she does not have the authority to make any independent decisions, she works for the President and she is his representative.

Puhleeze, we don't need a fourth war.

Syria is landlocked. Hence we will need to fly over a neighbor nation in order to reach Syria. The choices are not very good. We can't go over Israel since that will provoke anti-Israeli fears. Lebanon is already heavily influenced (controlled) by Syria. Turkey, Jordan and Iraq are all unlikely partners in this little war.

Sometimes, it's better to stay out than to make the mess even worse.

These Repubs scream for budget cuts, then in the next breath scream that the U.S. has to get involved in every crisis going on worldwide. Who do they think pays for these missles, jet fighter attacks, intelligence on the ground, etc. It sure ain't the French, and sure ain't NATO. It's the American taxpayers. Syria has been anti-American forever and a day, and, more importantly does not have oil, so don't drag the U.S. into it.

Chill Timmy boy... I'm sure Obama will address this right after his Saturday golf game. I expect yet another imperial Obama pronouncement backed up with nothing but hot air. They have all figured out long ago the Whitehouse is occupied by an empty suit.

Now here is a balanced budget Republican calling for yet more armed intervention.... nothing is or ever has been as expensive as war! Read your histories to see the truth of that: it has bankrupt empires, nations, kings, dukes, etc.... and I am not even considering the butcher's bill in life and limb. If you want fiscal responsbility Mr. Repulican(s) knock off your wars since you'll never see anything like a balanced budget when engaged in them.

President Obama can't win with the Republicans. Either he's too slow or he acts to fast without thought. Must be great to govern by just whining and complaining. Why don't you people try to be helpful?

When he's done demanding action maybe he can work up enough nerve to actually declare as a candidate.

"Path to Prosperity"? More like "Detour to Destruction"!
