Arizona governor criticizes birther 'distraction'

Washington (CNN) - Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who vetoed a bill in April that would have required presidential candidates to prove they were American citizens born in the United States, thinks the so-called birther movement is a "huge distraction."

"It's just something that I think is leading our country down a path of destruction and it just is not serving any good purpose," Brewer said Monday on CNN's "John King, USA."

What does Barbour's exit mean for the GOP race?

Washington (CNN) – Haley Barbour's exit from the GOP presidential sweepstakes leaves his endorsement and donors up for grabs. "He's a campaign without a candidate," says GOP strategist Alex Castellanos. And those who know Barbour expect him to take sides in the GOP primary.

"I doubt Barbour will sit on the sidelines for this," one top Republican strategist tells CNN, who points out Barbour didn't endorse anyone in the 2008 presidential primary and later regretted it. This person adds, "Now he's a free agent," but don't expect anything immediate.

Medicare campaign takes shape

Washington (CNN) - The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has officially launched its campaign targeting 25 House Republican lawmakers over their support of the 2012 GOP budget proposal.

Adding to paid radio advertisements that went up last week is an initiative to flood Republican home districts with telephone calls to get the DCCC word out, as well as a web video posted Monday. All make the point that the Republican members promised to protect Medicare on the 2010 campaign trail only to support a 2012 budget which would cut Medicare spending in the future.
