White House releases Obama's birth certificate

(CNN) – President Obama released his original birth certificate Wednesday, saying the controversy surrounding the issue had become a "sideshow."

“We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We’ve got better stuff to do," said Obama.

The surprise release follows recent and sustained remarks by businessman Donald Trump, among others, that raised doubts as to whether the president was born in the United States.

“Over the last two and half years, I have watched with amusement. I have been puzzled with the degree with which this thing just kept going,” Obama told reporters Wednesday.

Washington (CNN)– Donald Trump plans to meet with one of New Hampshire’s leading Tea Party activists during his visit to the first-in-in-the-nation primary state on Wednesday.

CNN has learned that Trump has a sit-down in Dover this afternoon with Andrew Hemingway, chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus of New Hampshire.

Obama selects Panetta for defense secretary

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama will name CIA Director Leon Panetta as his nominee to succeed Robert Gates as defense secretary, a U.S. official said Wednesday.

An administration official said this month that Obama is considering Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, as the next possible CIA director.
