White House releases Obama's birth certificate

(CNN) – President Obama released his original birth certificate Wednesday, saying the controversy surrounding the issue had become a "sideshow."

Obama's birth certificate

“We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We’ve got better stuff to do," said Obama.

The surprise release follows recent and sustained remarks by businessman Donald Trump, among others, that raised doubts as to whether the president was born in the United States.

“Over the last two and half years, I have watched with amusement. I have been puzzled with the degree with which this thing just kept going,” Obama told reporters Wednesday.

Responding to the development, Trump said, "I have accomplished something nobody else has accomplished."

"I want to look at it, but I hope it’s true," he told reporters in New Hampshire. "He should have done it a long time ago. I am really honored to have played such a big role in hopefully getting rid of this issue."

Other Republicans weigh in

Earlier Wednesday, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said the debate has been "really bad for the Republican Party."

The so-called "birther" debate is "good politics" but "bad for the country," said Pfeiffer.

In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper Monday, Trump repeated his doubts and said he had been told the certificate was "missing."

A new CNN investigation revealed earlier this week what most analysts have been saying since the "birther" controversy erupted during the 2008 presidential campaign: Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961.

While the president has made light of the controversy, the question remained political red meat for some of his critics. A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll showed that nearly 75% of Americans believe Obama was definitely or probably born in the United States. More than four in 10 Republicans, however, believe he probably or definitely was not born in America.

See Obama's Certification of Live Birth

The U.S. Constitution says only "natural born" citizens can become president - a vague clause that some members of the birther movement contend disqualifies Obama because, they insist, he was born outside the United States.

Skeptics contend, among other things, that Obama was born in his father's home country of Kenya.

I certainly can't find fault with the birthers for asking to see it, just don't understand why he hid it for so long! After all, it's one of the requirements for being President. Most any job requires that you prove you are eligible to hold the position, and I expect any candidate of any party to prove it, too.

I do hope this ends the controversy.

OK the docs are released. Let's move on to more important things such as lowering taxes, finding jobs. And being able to live without worrying how your next bill is getting paid.
I'm sure that the Donald has also skeletons in his closet... All the rich do!!!!!

Like a balloon that has just had a pin stuck in it, Donald Trump was just seen flying around in circles....with all the hot air leaking out! Now let's see his income tax report! Now Donald wants to show that Barack Obama is dumb and didn't deserve to go to college???? Let's see the Trump's grades....and let's plaster all the juicy details of his school record, marriage record, bankruptcies, infidelities...etc. The problem with Democrats, and even President Obama, is that they are too mind-manntered. There is only one way to fight these people......STAND UP TO THEM AND GIVE THEM CRAP RIGHT BACK! Donald...looks like you've just been FIRED!

People wonder why our country is constantly held back as much of the world progresses? We let the irrational (and worse) distract us with silly issues like this. They make horrible decisions and thrust their ignorance into the spotlight so we can see the ugly underbelly of our culture. I wish President Obama had not released his birth certificate but I understand why he did. It is this type of poor judgement that ran our country into the ground for 2 terms prior to Obama. Now they desperately want to de-legitimize a good President who has to clean up the Republican mess...why? These sick people need to grow up and get out of the way.

This is the "Certificate of Live Birth" which he showed before NOT his hospital birth certificate. Ridiculous!

It's been a valid question and I don't know WHY Obama refused to show it. Every job requires some kind of proof of citizenship. THe people who are critisizing the "birthers" are the ones who are MADLY IN LOVE with Obama and wouldn't care where he was born.

Why is simple compliance with the US Constitution considered by so many to be an unreasonable demand of "hicks," "nut jobs" and "fanatics?" We can't get a social security card or drivers license without showing our birth certificate! Surely something as consequential as holding the highest office of the US government and upholding the US Constitution should require confirmation that all candidates for POTUS are in compliance with the prerequisites mandated in the Constitution. This would never have been an issue if the birth certificate had been presented by or before Obama's nomination. It should be a standard part of the process.

Too bad, this whole saga has been very entertaining to watch! Will be interesting to see how they respond now, probably suggest it's forged since he's had some time to get it worked on.

OK, the birthing issue is over the top. But to question Mccain's legitimacy is just as bad. he was a service baby and ,by the way , served our country more than most.

This will not quiet the conspiracy crowd. There will still be those that say it is a forgery, that he is not a citizen, that blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

That's not a birth certificate. That's a "certificate of live birth". It doesn't prove anything.

Now that this has been once and for all resolved, hopefully our politicians and businessmen will actually start doing their jobs and focus on our country's welfare!

If it took this long to find it or produce it, I doubt that it is real.... It doesn't matter much anyways.. He has already ruined the USA for the time he has been in office.... He could have been born on Mars and it wouldn't change a thing.

this was released today because Donald Trump is due to officially announce his entry into the 2012 race today in NH. The White House trumped Trump's big day.

Trump gets results – awesome! Can't understand why the President didn't release this earlier. Not a birther by any means – I knew if the Clinton's couldn't find anything nefarious on his b.c., no one can. However, I was questioning why it was kept a secret. Looks like it shouldn't been.
Well, Trump did it. He got the results. Great, now let's move on and focus on getting America back on track.

McCain had no problem with his birth certificate because his father was in the military. That's why he was born in Panama.

So . . . if the White House released the birth certificate for Obama–where is it? Why isn't it embedded in this story?

Still pending are a number of questions. For example, the birth announcement in the Honolulu Star gives an address on Kalaniole Highway. Mama Obama and the grandparents never lived at that address.

Why did they give a fake address?

And when did Obama re-acquire citizenship? When he was in Indonesia he was listed as Indonesian at the madrasa?

Where are his college transcripts? What nationality does that show?

Any loan broker will be able to see the issues with this instantly. The white glow around the "typed" letters reveal that the print has been "set" onto this form. In forgery, it is VERY difficult when the forger needs to forge both the print AND the background. Look for yourself. Notice how the green background is missing inside most of the "looped" letters like o's, l's and others.

But hey, the liberals and the media won't care about
"minor" details like that. They tow the line regardless of the truth.

Unfortunately, this document only confirms that which the GOP is most concerned with. President Obama is half Black.

And that's what really bothers some of them.

Geoff, then McCain should have been out of the race also, he was most certainly not born in the U.S. but why did not one contest him? Just wondering. Silly Silly people and your theories, a truly educated person would have conceded many, many months ago that the birther theory was just a bunch of hogwash...
