White House releases Obama's birth certificate

(CNN) – President Obama released his original birth certificate Wednesday, saying the controversy surrounding the issue had become a "sideshow."

Obama's birth certificate

“We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We’ve got better stuff to do," said Obama.

The surprise release follows recent and sustained remarks by businessman Donald Trump, among others, that raised doubts as to whether the president was born in the United States.

“Over the last two and half years, I have watched with amusement. I have been puzzled with the degree with which this thing just kept going,” Obama told reporters Wednesday.

Responding to the development, Trump said, "I have accomplished something nobody else has accomplished."

"I want to look at it, but I hope it’s true," he told reporters in New Hampshire. "He should have done it a long time ago. I am really honored to have played such a big role in hopefully getting rid of this issue."

Other Republicans weigh in

Earlier Wednesday, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said the debate has been "really bad for the Republican Party."

The so-called "birther" debate is "good politics" but "bad for the country," said Pfeiffer.

In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper Monday, Trump repeated his doubts and said he had been told the certificate was "missing."

A new CNN investigation revealed earlier this week what most analysts have been saying since the "birther" controversy erupted during the 2008 presidential campaign: Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961.

While the president has made light of the controversy, the question remained political red meat for some of his critics. A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll showed that nearly 75% of Americans believe Obama was definitely or probably born in the United States. More than four in 10 Republicans, however, believe he probably or definitely was not born in America.

See Obama's Certification of Live Birth

The U.S. Constitution says only "natural born" citizens can become president - a vague clause that some members of the birther movement contend disqualifies Obama because, they insist, he was born outside the United States.

Skeptics contend, among other things, that Obama was born in his father's home country of Kenya.

Well it's about time! So this proves he's a citizen but he still isn't eligible to be President because both his parents weren't US citizens. Same as Schwarzenegger ...

It won't make any difference. The birthers/republicans/tea party will never accept it.

McCain is not "natural born". He was born in panama. Regardless of his family's military history, born in panama or on a military base located in panama, neither are Natural US.

What a courageous act for the President to finally present a birth certificate! I know it took a lot of soul searching and it was tough for him. We knew he had transparency in him somewhere. We just had to search for it.

@ Springmountaineer: "I never understood the secrey, and I haven't seen anything yet. We've never known so little about our President- how bout them college and passport records?"

Wow, really? REALLY? So let's go back and ask George W., Clinton, Bush Sr., the Reagan estate, and all the previous presidents or their estates' representatives if they could - just for certainty's sake - produce birth certificates, college and passport records. We wouldn't want someone to go down in history as "real" president of the US until we've plummed those depths. This is SHEER IDIOCY. Move on to something that (1) matters and (2) isn't a conspiracy theory. PLEASE!

    Time for his arrest!

Wonderful! Proves his father was NOT a U.S. Citizen, therefore Obama Jr has DUAL Citizenship, and therefore by definition is NOT a Natural Born Citizen. Obama, being a Constitutional Laywer KNEW this a priori and thus has committed intentional criminal fraud.

    How about the phoney SSN?

This is really disgusting. No other president in history had to do this. Why does this President has to endure such attacks adn disrespect? I know some of you don't think a lot of this is racially motivated but it is. He IS our President, so deal with it.

Look the liberals asked for President Bush's school records, service records, and even a transfer order while he was in service. Obama is shady... Still have questions of who he is and what he has done. School records, over seas activities, MONEY???. The liberal media sure dug up a lot on President Bush's school days and service records. GET OVER IT... we would like to know Obama's COMPLETE story.

This country has had a lot of presidents & this is the first time one of them is asked to prove their place of birth....the funny thing is that when you point out to ANY "birther" that their request is based only on racial scrutiny they hide behind the constitunional requirements to desguise the fact that this is the 1st time in history a race of white Americans is asking another American to show proof of birth just because he comes from African people....& if that's not the case, & if their only goal is to uphold the constitutional principle that only people born in US soil can run for the presidency (whichi by the way Hawaii IS an US state) then by all rationality ANYONE who voted for John McCain on the last election voted for someone who was not born in the US because unlike any other candidate or president for that matter Johnny Mack was born in Panama....in an US Naval base. I wonder if he would've been president how many black people would've bother to ask him to prove he was born in America?

The truth never gets in the way of a truly determined stupid person. Here's hoping the birthers will still keep grinding on it. I'm enjoying this Republican circus parade that's careening towards 2012. It has no one capable of being the ringmaster to lead it and has no shortage of clowns that can make us laugh as they dance down the street.

These are the same people that will be in church on Sunday and declare that they are Christians. They also want you to believe that God has share his grace on America. This country is at an all time low. People from other countries get to look at America's true values.

People seem to forget that John McCain was not born in the US. So if he became president do you think this much of a stink would have been raised. Facts people facts

we are all too naive....he let this continue to distract everyone from his miserable tenure as a president. His track record on the issues is worse than deplorable. Now his train wreck of a presidency will take front seat. And that he cannot escape so easily......

Kenneth the VI of Minneapolis, that is not always the case. People need to stop stereotyping party members, and pushing a wedge deeper inbetween the two. It's this kind of nonsense that has lead to the more radical from both parties being elected instead of common sense indivduals who understand the meaning of comprimise and working together for the good of the country. I myself am for the most part a few conservative Republican, but I share some liberal beliefs with the other party (abortion, gay marriage, and a clear defined seperation of church and state). I can't stand Obama, and disagree with tons of his policies and ideas, and hoped in the beginning he wasn't born in the US so he wouldn't win. But if the Clintons couldn't dig up the dirt, it's not there. Most of us agree he was born in the US. There are just enough folks that think he wasn't to keep the story going, and that = news, because those that believe it want to see the reports, and those against it love using these stories to bash Republicans. Stop feeding the frezy on both sides and this will die and fade away.

DOESN'T MATTER WHERE HE WAS BORN

his father was not an American citizen – which makes him a DUAL CITIZEN not a NATURAL BORN citizen ... hello – why is this so hard to comprehend ?

OBAMA will NEVER BE a "natural born" cititizen unless his BC shows his daddy ain't BHOsr ... and was really some US citizen (like Malcolm X)

so it doesn't matter if he produces a HI Birth Certificate or not ... as long as his daddy was NOT a citizen, OBAMA will NEVER be eligible to hold the office of president

plain and simple ... discussion over.

Thank goodness the techonolgy to create fake documents doesn't yet exist. If it did, we would have illegal immigration; identity theft; underage drinking; and who knows what else. BHO is one and done. Bank on it brothers.
