Is the next immigration fight over 'anchor babies'?

Washington (CNN) – While the nation's political dialogue was hijacked over the issue of President Obama's birthplace, bubbling below the surface is the fact that a child of illegal immigrants born in the United States - derided by some as "anchor babies" - could one day be president.

Under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

    The Republican Party drove the economy into a ditch, and now want to drive their own party into a ditch.

    What on earth are the current group of conservative leaders thinking? This is a lose-lose-lose issue. They will lose any attempt to amend the Constitution. They will lose seats in Congress needed to amend the Constitution. They will lose an entire voter demographic for a generation, if not longer.

    This is beginning to get painful to witness.

    I guess they figure they can get enough states to ratify. Guess again. People are beginning to realize that anything the Republican party wants is probably something that they personally do not want.

    If you want to argue the intent of Constitution, then take a look at the 2nd Amendment. At the time of the writing a firearm amounted a musket, which was not mass-produced with interchangeable parts. You had no bullets, either. You had to load it up with shot and gunpowder, tamp it down, pull back the flintlock, and pray it didn't blow up in your face. Those were the types of arms the framers of the 2nd Amendment had in mind.

    So, yeah. Let's revisit the Constitution and determine what the original intent means in today's world. Conservatives prefer to keep their own progressive definiton of the 2nd Amendment because it suits them.

    Interesting. For over 200 years the Constitution has existed and EVERYONE was content to live by it. Now since the country has elected it's first half black man IT'S NOT SUFFICIENT / changes need to be made? Does anyone besides me smell racism? I know it's all in my mind. Silly me.

    what give a person the right to come here illegal and have a child , then say they are citizens ... we are the only nation that says its ok .... the insane.... its like a lottery ticket to have a child here...this 14 th amendment had to do with slavery not illegals....
