Daniels talks 2012 with Bush

Washington (CNN) – Republican Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels revealed Tuesday he has consulted with his former boss, former President George W. Bush, about a potential run for the White House in 2012.

Although he wouldn’t divulge details of the discussion, Daniels, who served as Bush’s director of the Office of Management and Budget, said he is aware he owes people an answer about a bid. Daniels has said he would make up his mind at the conclusion of the legislative session in Indiana, which ended Friday.

When asked if he would like to run, Daniels responded “Would I like to? No. What sane person would like to?”

“Believe it or not, I’m not one of those people who’s ever sat around scheming and dreaming,” Daniels said on “Fox and Friends.” “Never entered my mind, but I’ve agreed at the behest of a lot of people to give it some thought.”

Addressing al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s death for the first time publicly, the two-term Hoosier governor said Obama, former President Bush and the military deserve credit for the successful operation.

“I think both presidents would be very quick to give primary credit to our military and to our intelligence people, folks who did the real work,” Daniels said. “We ought to not over read it either, everyone said correctly this is a huge moment, a symbolic victory that this struggle’s not over, won’t be for a long time.”

He also said he hopes the sense of patriotism in America following the mission is not fleeting.

“People care about the security of this country every day but absolutely on an occasion like this,” Daniels said. “Let’s hope it’s not too temporary, the unity, the spontaneous unity we saw is always great and we need it for other purposes in this country.”

As budget director, was it your idea to keep the costs of two wars out of the budget?

So the man who helped turn a surplus into huge deficits wants to run? Let me guess, he'll run on fiscal responsibility.....HA. At least it will create more jobs for comedians.

Daniels is a two-term governor, not four.

Seems like a nice enough guy. But this is the same guy that was in charge of the budget under the Bush admin. He should be hiding from the public after his performance as budget director...not running for president.

"George, Obama just undermined my fear campaign strategy."
    "He was great. Wasn' he?"
"Now what do I do about my campaign?"

So much for this guy's judgement! His track record alone speaks volumes. Save your money, Daniels....and you already spent all of ours!

Look at his state of Indiana, especially the NW corner. It's deplorable what has happened and now he thinks he can do the same to the U.S. The Hammond/Gary area should be an embarressment to the entire mid-west, but it's forgotten and left to decay.

You all should pull the wool from your eyes and come to realization that no person can be blamed for the economic downturn. Any president would have vouched to go to war which was a huge difference maker in our economy. President Obama even said in his most recent address on the Bin Laden news that he would not hesitate to retaliate to actions such as those on 9/11. Daniels as governor of Indiana has increased the amount of jobs significantly. In 2010 Daniels led the way to create 23,000 jobs in Indiana, which is an increase in the amount of jobs created in 2009 at 20,000 jobs. Please tell me what other states in this country had such growth, or even corporations with growth in this economic situation? Small list I'd say, if you can come up with any. Quit whining about anyone that tries to take on this position, and instead look for the best candidate to move forward.
And "Poser", you should realize the amount our current president sunk our nations deficit in his first year in office before you make a politically financial comment surrounding a time of combat.

  12. Get educated

Everyone here needs to get educated on Daniel's track record. He fought hard against Bush and the pork barrel spending of Bush's time in office. Unfortunately, even in his position, he lacked any real authority. When he had authority as governor of Indiana, he has had a balanced budget three consecutive years. He created an independent jobs commission which helped to sign major contracts with car companies and got almost 500 hundred business to agree to create jobs in his state, and that was only in the first year. Because he could balance the budget, he was able to take the cigarette tax and create a state insurance program for those less fortunate. Finally, he has a commitment to green energy helping to make Indiana one of the leading producers of bio diesel. You people need to learn to look past the letter (R or D) in front of the name and judge someone on their record. We would be lucky to have a man like Daniel's as president.

No way, no how. Didn't even list the on-going war expenses on the budget - ergo, it looks like the expense was on Obama's watch because that's when the TRUTH about the enormous dollar amounts were revealed. He's sneaky, and a Bush worshiper. No way, no how. What else has he hidden???

These guys really think the American public is STUPID. This turd helped "w" run the economy into the dirt and hide the costs of two wars "for the next president to deal with". Now, he wants to be president?!!! Please.

I am so hoping for at least one candidate on the right who is not a joke, somebody who can engage Obama on real issues instead of his birth certificate. Someone who at least will be able to make me questions who I should vote for. Somebody who can present conservative ideas without offending our intelligence. Could this be the guy?

If Daniels does run, the fact that he endorsed all of the tax cuts and not paying for the spending on the war in Afghanistan and conflict in Iraq. Those show that he isn't fully aware of spending and the consequences.

  21. Budget

People, he was only on the OMB with Bush for 2 years 2001-2003. In fact the budget he sent to Congress in 2001 had deep cuts in all departments to help off set the tax cuts. He got the nick name "The Blade" because he was always trying to cut the budget. But there is only so much someone in his position can do. He can only suggest, he has no authority to pass. Perhaps everyone here needs to take a civics lesson to see how much power he actually had.

Why have we not seen a story about Daniels promising to sign a potentially unconstitutional bill that threatens to destroy Planned Parenthood in Indiana by violating Medicaid's prohibition against choosing which family service providers get to receive federal funding...thereby threatening millions of dollars in federal funding for ALL family services providers in Indiana??? Preferentially propping him up much so you can sensationalize the "ooooh, shiny....look at the potential POTUS candidate" stories, CNN??? How very very "liberal" of you to skip that story despite the damage it is going to do to millions of Indiana women and their ability to exercise their rights and obtain access to a full array of necessary medical services. Good for you. Kudos.

"Everyone here needs to get educated on Daniel's track record. He fought hard against Bush and the pork barrel spending of Bush's time in office"

That is certainly the gloss-over narrative that Daniels is attempting to create. You do a remarkable job of incritically regurgitating what you've been told to believe. Unfortunately for you tinfoil-hatted GOPer talking point parrots, as Director of OMB, Daniels was instrumental in creating and implementing the budget accounting shenanigans that attempted to hide the devastating deficit-creating affects of the Bush tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 and the massive decit and debt creating costs of the war in Iraq.

    ------------------
That was the whole problem. The economy wasn't broke. They had a surplus. An economic slowdown was in progress due to overmanipulation by Greenspan at the Fed ("irrational exuberance") So they tried to "stimulate it" by giving out tax cuts to "spur investment" when they had to was reign in Greenspan, pay down the deficit, and "let the market forces balance" themselves, as conservatives are so fond of saying.
