Washington (CNN) - Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will announce his presidential campaign on Wednesday, his spokesman Rick Tyler confirmed to CNN. Gingrich, who has been exploring a presidential bid for several months, "will announce on Twitter and Facebook."
His first formal speech as a presidential candidate will be Friday at the Georgia Republican Convention.
Gingrich has been traveling to some of the key early voting states as he has tested the waters trying to appeal to various constituencies of the party.
He has been forced to delay some of his self-imposed deadlines for making decisions about a campaign as he unwinds himself from several of his businesses.
He is in the top tier of prospective candidates but ranks below some of the other contenders. In the latest CNN/Opinion Research Poll taken between April 29 and May 1, 10 percent of Republicans picked Gingrich as their choice for the nomination in 2012, the same percentage as Texas Rep. Ron Paul. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, real estate mogul Donald Trump and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee ranked higher than Gingrich, although such surveys at this stage usually mostly gauge name recognition.
As a Republican, even i recognize Newt as a nutcase. His candidacy – if nominated – guarantees Obama's second term. I hope Newt has no skeletons in his closets – other than infidelity and divorce – because he is going to get eaten alive by the media.
Yeah right. What a joke.
Ron Paul is already the front runner! Ron Paul for President. Freedom in 2012! Ron Paul!
it kind of surprises me that you set your bar so LOW!! Be prepared to be dissapointed again in 2012. But one thing you're right about, the Republican primaries WILL show us what a great president looks like and he's already in office.
He is in the top tier of prospective candidates ?
This guy is bottom of the barrel lower shelf.
Great, he can push his new as only King Newt see's it BS book on America as runs for president .
This guy is a looser who wont let go , his time has come and gone, thank god !
It's amazing that after 2 years of nothing but negativity and character assassination of President Obama that the Republicans CAN'T EVEN COME UP WITH A VIABLE, ELECTABLE candidate! This is indeed the PARTY OF NO – no plans for economic recovery, no clue about the role of government in the 21st century, no real candidate.
The Party of No knows no future!
Newt for president? Please tell me it is a monday morning joke or humour. What?
