Perry and Obama take a pass on meeting

(CNN) –Texas Gov. Rick Perry will not meet with President Obama Tuesday when he travels to the Lone Star State. Obama is scheduled to deliver remarks on immigration in El Paso and headline two fundraisers in Austin Texas, but he will not visit with the governor. And in a classic case of he-said, she-said, it's unclear who is refusing to meet with whom.

Perry has been outspoken about his displeasure with the president's refusal to sign a disaster declaration for the wildfire-plagued state and turned down an offer to meet Obama at the airport, according to White House spokesman Jay Carney.

He spoke of the administration's overtures toward the put-out Perry en route to Texas on Air Force One, saying, "We invited him to meet with the President and he declined the invitation. We have also, in the past, offered him a National Security Council briefing on immigration. He declined that as well."

But a spokesperson for the Republican governor, Elizabeth Frazier, offered a slightly different account.

"We tried to arrange something," she said. "The president had offered a greeting on the tarmac in El Paso. The governor was not able to do that."

"We did offer to meet or greet with him when he arrived in Austin for the fundraiser," she continued, "Or to arrange a tour over areas affected by the wildfire, and the White House declined."

When asked if the greeting in Austin was coupled with the tour, she said, "Either/or."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved 25 grants to assist the state of Texas with battling wildfires that have damaged an area greater than the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. But Perry insists the state needs a federal disaster declaration to clear the way for additional federal aid.

"Right now the governor's priority is the wildfire," Frazier affirmed.

"He believes the federal government should approve his request for federal disaster relief. Meeting with the president, that would have been a top priority. Meeting with him in Austin or a brief greeting, we did offer that or to arrange a tour."

CNN's Roland Martin contributed to this report.

    awww, poor Ricky..... "I don't want the Federal government in my bidness! We're gonna secede!"
    and now we hear, even though the feds paid for 75% of wildfire management, "Waaa! The Feds won't give me money!"
    Wuss! If you don't want to be part of this Nation, then pay for it yourself!

    The Campaigner-in-Chief is only there to collect the money from stupid Texans that think he cares about them. He needs to move on to the next fund raiser and doesn't have time to see the states problems. After all you're Texas and he lost texas by 10-11% in 2008. You are not high on his list to be helped. Now had you been a union controlled bastion of debt and despair, he'd have PLENTY of time to con you out of money AND see all of your self-inflicted misery.

    25 grants and you are still begging for more? Remember you texans voted for a smaller government when you elected Perry so buckle down and deal with it; and now your stupid Gov has the nerve to be angry, angry? give me a Break!! You people of texas,
    deserve exactly what they get-Nothing.

    Rick should secede from Texas. 25 grants to help put out the fires is not enough for Perry, who takes more federal money than Texas sends to Washington DC, while condemning government bailouts. Each day he is in office makes his predecessor look like a genius.

    Why in the world would the government give Texas any money and be left holding the note? Remember their stupid governor wants to succeed. This was a smart move and for those of you who claim to be "fiscally conservative" we SAVED millions by not doing so. Perry has nothing of value or substance to add to ANY discussion with our president. I'm glad they won't meet and hopefully when our president visits Texas again Perry won't be the governor.

    So, the Governer is not able to make time in his busy schedule to meet the President's schedule. I see no reason for the Governer to dictate to the POTUS who and when he should go places. I would decline to even respond to such invitations. Are you kiddin' me?

    To hear the Perry tell it, you would think his country was not recieving any foreign aid from the US government. Just a year ago, his country of Texas didn't need any foreign aid from the US government.

    Has anyone evver heard of damage from rural wild fires being declared as a disaster declaration? He is getting some funds from FEMA, and should be grateful that he is getting that. HIs colleagues in Congress cut funds out of teh budget that he is seeking compensation from. We cannot turn it all over to his country of Texas this early in the hurricane season. Can we?

    "The president had offered a greeting on the tarmac in El Paso. The governor was not able to do that."

    That's not very statesman like of Gov. Perry. Here we have another republican governor asking for assistance from the federal government which they're so much against.

    Too bad whiny-man Perry. Why should he meet with you when you bash him constantly and talk of secesion because you don't like "big government"...EXCEPT when you take $ and use it to lower your state budget deficit...

    Perry is acting like a child. He is upset because President Obama visited Alabama and is comparing wildfires to tornados. What a jerk Perry is. How do you compare wildfires to hundreds of lives lost from tornados. I thought Perry wants the Federal government out of his state's life. Well you can't have your cake and eat it too, can you.

    @DemClassWarfare,
    Uh, didn't the Gov declare he didn't want Federal funds? (YES)

    But now he's crying because the Feds are only giving Texas grants up to 75% of the cost to fight these wildfires..... Just like you, he's a crybaby who can't stand it when he doesn't get his way, even though it's what he asked for FIRST....
    Keep up the crybaby routine, people are running from the GOTP

    If Perry really, really needed the money (as opposed to needing to create a distracting false issue) he would have been on that tarmac in a second, on his knees groveling and giving thanks.

    Perry is loser and has burned his bridges. Remember, he wanted to secede and hates the federal government. I would not give this Texas clown the time of day.

    Keep it classy Perry – keep it classy. And while you're at it, quit crying about those gummit funds you didn't want before you did.

    And to the good people of Texas, what exactly were you thinking when you put him in office again? Of course here in GA we have a possible criminal GOPer as governor, so I really don't have room to talk.

    I made a wish the other day, that I would like to see come true before the end of my life. It's that people start paying attention to what the people they put in office say, BEFORE they vote for them.

    @DemClassWarfare......
    man your anger that you post on all of these CNN threads just shows what's wrong with the GOP..thanks for doing it because I doubt if I'll ever vote Republican again until they can show me why I should. And the sorry gov they voted in down here didn't have the "cajones" to come and face the POTUS after all the negative stuff he's said about him not wanting Fed dollars at first now crying because he's not getting any. Perry shows why Texas is a red state....right now red FACED!!
