As he prepares campaign, Gingrich faces hurdles with religious conservatives

(CNN) – How big a stumbling block will Newt Gingrich’s three marriages and admission of an affair pose to his efforts to win so-called values voters?

“It’s a huge hurdle,” said Richard Land, the public policy chief for the Southern Baptist Convention, the county’s largest evangelical denomination.

Will retired general have the firepower to defeat GOP in Texas?

(CNN) - Democrats haven't won a major statewide election in Texas in more than 20 years. But they hope that retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez's announcement that he's running for the Senate in 2012 will break the Republican party's streak in what's considered a very solid red state.

Sanchez filed paperwork in San Antonio Wednesday to launch a Democratic bid for the open Senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who announced in January that she would not run next year for a fifth term in office.

Big oil targeted in budget fight

Washington (CNN) - Senate Democrats planned to open debate Wednesday on legislation to cut $21 billion in subsidies from big oil companies and use the money to reduce the federal debt - a move designed to put Republicans on the defensive and capitalize on public anger over rising gas prices.

The bill has virtually no chance of winning congressional approval. Analysts believe, however, that Democrats will try to use the issue to their political advantage in both the run-up to the 2012 elections and the ongoing fight to increase to the amount of money the federal government is allowed to borrow before Washington defaults on its financial obligations.

Washington (CNN) – Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is expected to announce his bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination Wednesday afternoon on Facebook and Twitter.

Earlier Wednesday, when Gingrich himself was asked by reporters on Capitol Hill after a prayer breakfast what time he would announce, he responded: "9 o'clock tonight." That caused some confusion about the timing of the announcement.
