Georgia governor signs controversial anti-illegal immigration law

Atlanta (CNN) - Despite protests outside his office and boycott threats, Georgia's governor on Friday signed into law one of the toughest anti-illegal immigration measures yet enacted by an individual state.

The measure, which Gov. Nathan Deal inked about a month after it cleared the Republican-dominated Georgia legislature, allows law enforcement officers to ask about immigration status when questioning suspects in certain criminal investigations.

What is wrong with the Republican Party lately? They keep shooting themselves in the foot as if they were millepedes and had a hundred of them to spare. They are alienating one demographic after another; hispanics, seniors, women, college students, middle class, union workers, unemployed, uninsured, etc. The list goes on and on.

The new George Wallace is here, folks. No one has talked about illegals in Georgia, so why is this clown doing this, and wasting more of our taxpayer dollars with the inevitable lawsuits?

Way to go governor Deal. It is past time to close our borders and secure our nation. Why the Federal laws are being ignored it a mystery to me. Those who are here without our invitation should be sent back regardless their status. We should not jail them, as we do most criminals, but send them back with a warning to never return without proper invitation. Those who come here and have babies who become little citizens of the USA glut our services resources. Because of the freebees they receive once they have that little citizen, It becomes their goal to come here to have the baby. That should be stopped as well. The baby should be the same nationality as the mother. Stand up for your country or soon you will be forced to learn Spanish and fly the Mexican flag.

Asked about HB 87 last month by CNN affiliate WSB, Obama defended the federal government's actions.
"The truth on the matter is we've done more on enforcement than any previous administration," the president said. "We have more border patrols, we have had serious crackdowns on employers who are hiring undocumented workers."
    ===============================================================================================
And STILL you are a miserable FAILURE. All you have done is window dressing to say you're doing something. Yet there are MILLIONS of illegals still in this country and we STILL have porous borders where people stream across, 10% of which do NOT come from Mexico so we just might have a terrorism threat from your failure to top the cake.

Meanwhile, you crack wise about the problem and people that want the borders secured and sue states that try to protect their citizens (some are being murdered but I guiess you're Ok with that) from the onslaught of illegal contry invaders.

It is VERY simple. Secure the borders and allow any illegal in this country 6 months to pack up and get out on their own. After 6 months, it's jail time then deportation, never to be allowed in again. Institute WORK VISAS for seasonal farm help but they must return home at least every two years and then others would be given a chance to apply. Anybody overstaying their visa would be jailed then deported never to be allowed back into the country. VERY SIMPLE, now JUST DO IT!

We pretty much do that already with seasonal migrant workers. They play a vital role in keeping your food prices down. As for deporting people...where do you send them? I told you yesterday what countries will tell you, "We have never heard of that person before." You will be told that 5-10-20-30 million times, again and again. And the most troubling part is that in a significant percentage of the cases, the countries will be telling you the truth. Many of the illegals are not coming from large cities or urbanized areas, (although most legals do, however.). A great many are coming from rural areas and are not even on the radar of their countrieso of origin.

I can see the problem Georgia is having on its border with Mexico... Oh, wait.. Georgia is nowhere near Mexico. Or Canada.

Maybe they'd do better investigating all the farm workers. Take away the jobs and you take away the problem.

.......anyone.........didn't think so.......as long as you can get illegal’s to work for less pay than American workers, why bother to fix the whole problem

the republican-owned corporations are breaking the law by luring them here for low-paying jobs. LOCK UP THE BOSSES THAT HIRE THEM. NO JOBS, NO ILLEGALS.

IT'S OUR CORPORATIONS THAT ARE NOT ENFORCING FEDERAL LAW.

President Obama was talking about immigration reform in Texas and the Republicans accused him of election talk now they want to make their own law they need to jump on board and do what is right we cannot have different immigration law for each state

  16. Yikes!

At what point do these new and proposed rules start fining and jailing the business owners that knowling hire illegal aliens? Go after the problem, businesses that hire them. Illegal immigration is just a symptom of the problem.

I don't support anyone being here illegally but I do understand why they come. Jobs.

If 1 single American citizen gets detained and held because of this law............than it's unconstitutional. It's better than AZ's but the room for civil rights violations is still there.

Here is a question ticker, if the majority of registered sex offenders are middle aged white men, and we "want to protect the children", then it should be ok for any middle aged white men during their daily individual pursuit of happiness, to get stopped and checked for their sex offender status, or checked to see if their not sex offenders........doesn't sound to American in that instance does it?

The above scenario is the reason for the federal lawsuits, and people gathering in protest in the streets. THINK about it then come up with something better so that no American is detained unlawfully because they "fit the description". Trust me, it's not fun. I've served/fought proudly with Korean's, Nigerians, Poles, and yes Mexicans, who EARNED their citizenship, through serving their country! ALEC and the CCA are counting their dollars now, they are the made architects of the legislature......don't believe me, google it!

Another Republican wasting tax payers' money. This law, like SB1070 , will be tied up in the Court and zillions of dollars in legal fees will be exhausted trying to defend an UNCONSTITUTIONAL law. This what you get when you elect a Teahadist to office-–money wasted while your kids go uneducated, infrastructure crumbles, law enforcement and firefighters are laid off. Welcome to the Teahadist Nation that YOU, the ignorant voter, elected!

Read the headline – Something very odd about a society when something is 'controversial' about being ANTI (Illegal)!!! Think about it. People are making a controversy about others being against something that is illeagal. What the hell has happened to this country!?!?!?! I'm not opposed to immigration...just do it through the legal system in place. If you (as a society) do not like the system...have representatives change it. Until then, enforce the system in place. VERY SIMPLE CONCEPT GOVT.

@ Dottie: Look at a map, and tell us if Georgia borders any other countries ( no, Alabama does not count).
@ gt: Lets see your papers. Your grammar and syntax are not good enough, even for Georgia. The long-for birth vertificate would be helpful, too.
@Democrat Class Warfare – Destroying the economy, destroying the country: Sounds like you want a guest worker program, like the kind George W Bush, John McCain and Barack Obama have all advocated. Sounds like comprehensive reform, which you conservatives have always screamed you are against. Are you willing to pay for the cost of patrolling the border, even if it means paying more taxes? Should we compromise our security and our strategic interests overseas to keep illegals from having "anchor babies" ? How can they legally emmigrate and not offend you? Answer those questions before you launch into another worthless tirade that ignores the historical record on illegal immigration, and betrays the fact you have a knee-jerk reaction to the president without even considering what he has done or has tried to do. Get your facts straight, or at least have an opinion free of bile before you vomit them onto yet another story on the ticker.

I know how we fix this........we can take a page from the Famous great Ronald Reagan.....Amnesty for all! More tax payers, more hard workers, etc. etc......I hope Huckabee included that great Reagan fact.....I doubt it.

It's funny that alot of the right, highly criticize the president for doing EXACTLY what previous republican admins have done.

Illegal is Illegal, however fixing this problem we've gotten ourselves into is easier said then done. We simply can't deport them all. the United States would stop working but more realistically, it's just no going to happen, the U.S isn't exactly the size of Fiji. There are people that deserve to stay and people that need to go. We need to fix the system so problems like this won't occur in the future. It's stupid to think we can deport them all; but it's just as stupid to give all the illegals a path to citizenship. What the republicans are doing is borderline retarded.
