Emanuel begins new chapter

(CNN) – The Daley-era in Chicago ended Monday when Rahm Emanuel took over the reins as the Windy City's 46th mayor.

Emanuel assumed the new role by taking the oath of office at 12:23 p.m. ET in the Amy Morton of Steppenwolf Theater. Vice President Joe Biden, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and White House Chief of Staff William M. Daley, the former mayor's brother were in attendance.

Iowa's governor on caucuses: Iowa is 'wide open'

(CNN) – Iowa's Republican governor has a message for his party's presidential candidates: Come to Iowa more often.

"This is a state where you can effectively launch a campaign and it's not too late," Gov. Terry Branstad told reporters Monday morning. "We welcome the candidates to come to the Hawkeye state."

U.S. hits debt ceiling

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) – It's official: The U.S. government hit the debt ceiling on Monday, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress.

Geithner said he would have to suspend investments in federal retirement funds until Aug. 2 in order to create room for the government to continue borrowing in the debt markets.

Obama can put U.S. on 'right side' of Arab Spring, ex-official says

(CNN) – President Barack Obama's upcoming address on the Middle East is a chance for Washington "to get on the right side of history" after a season of historic upheaval there, his former intelligence chief said Sunday.

The Thursday speech is likely to address the ongoing fight against al Qaeda following the May 2 killing of its leader, Osama bin Laden, as well as the U.S. need for oil from the region and efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, retired Adm. Dennis Blair told CNN's "State of the Union."

Trump has no chance of being prez, Americans say

(CNN) – Donald Trump is getting more bad news as he comes closer to making a final decision about a presidential run.

A new survey from Politico and George Washington University indicates more than two-thirds of Americans think the business mogul has "no chance" of ever winning the White House.

'Celebrity Apprentice' would survive without Trump, NBC chief says

(CNN) - "Celebrity Apprentice" will stay on the NBC prime-time schedule even if Donald Trump hits the presidential campaign trail, the network's entertainment chairman said Sunday.

The show's "big success" is "due in part" to Trump, Bob Greenblatt said, but he predicts it can go on without him.

CNN: Boehner wants to ‘lock arms’ with Obama on budget deal
House Speaker John Boehner says he’s ready to “lock arms” with President Barack Obama on a deficit reduction agreement tied to raising the federal debt ceiling. Such a deal, reminiscent of past political agreements between presidents and House speakers of different parties, will be necessary to get congressional and White House approval of a measure that allows the U.S. government to increase how much it can borrow, Boehner told the CBS program “Face the Nation” in an interview broadcast Sunday.
