Tweet of the Day: Perkins mocks Mitch Daniels

@tperkins: Gov. Mitch Daniels bowed out of the presidential race over the weekend. Proving that the "truce" really does set you free–to stay home.

Tony Perkins is the president of the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian organization. His tweet is a reference to Daniel's repeated calls for Republicans to focus on fiscal and economic issues 2012 election. Daniel's proposed "truce" among Republicans on social issues earned him ridicule from the religious and socially conservative factions of the GOP.

  5. HAD ENOUGH? 9% unemployment, massive foreclosures, $4-5/gal gas, $1.7 TRILLION deficits, $14 TRILLION debt, Obamacare, Libyan war, unsecure borders, illegal alien invasion, alienated allies, embolden enemies

Couldn't get the wife to go along with running for President. Can't say as I blame her. With the hate filled left and their endless vitriol you need a thick skin and a willingness to return fire ten fold. I think Daniels wanted to run, but his wife would have probably taken a hike.

A bit infantile for a "Christian" to make fun of a statement by Gov. Daniels which was intended to promote tolerance and civility in the public square.

It woun't be long before the right wing is also trashing fomer Governor Huntsmann for his praise of Obama's leadership and his calm, cool, collected and competence.

That doesn't sound like a very Christian thing to say. How petty and vindictive.

    The right IS becoming deranged.

Full of hate, Tony tries to be a typical republican attack dog, but like most toy poodles, he will run and hide when the going gets tough.

One minute they're begging Mitch Daniels to run because the nation needs him to defeat President O'Bama. Larua Bush is calling his wife trying to convince her, to convince him to run, then, when he exercises his "God Given Right" to say no, which Tony Perkins and his Christian organization I'm sure won't disagree he has, the conservatives, Republicans, Tea Partiers and so called Christian Right do what they always do if you dare disagree and don't do what they say do. They eat their young.

Perkins is one of the people who has contributed to the decline of the GOP. The idiotic litmus tests, social engineering, and right wing judical activism is no better than what they claim to fight against. Its amazing that Mitch Daniels gets destroyed by being honest on one point, and the Right-Wingers start spraying foam in righteous(?) indignation over an observation that has already cost them control of the Senate and will help them to lose control of the House, as well as destroy their chances at winning the presidency. The efforts to make the GOP a true right-wing party will cause its demise in the long run, since loyalty to a creed is more important than solving problems.

Yes Tony P., just like the Jesus you claim to follow in both word & deed, I'm sure Christ would be gigging anyone who sought to promote civility in political discussions. After all, Jesus did say , "Blessed are the s–t stirrers, for they shall be called Children of God." Mt.5,9. No, Jesus said the "PEACEMAKERS" !

And those who are celebrating the departure of Mitch will not be celebrating come election day. Though there is no way to guarantee that Mitch would of won, he would of atleast kept the debate honest and focused on the real issues. Instead, the republicans want a person whose chance will deminish winning everythime they open their mouths. If Bachy, win the nod, she will loose the election. If empty suit wins, he will also loose. The adult in the room has left the room, now the circus will come to station near you.

I dont care about Mitch Daniels but Tony Perkins is worse than sewer scum!!!

I'm sure the 16 stitches Mitch got in his forehead knocked some senses into just saved his family that "nervous" juicy & embarassing details of his marriage life would have caused the GOP-Tea Party....No wonder Mitch Daniels wanted to take a rain check on social & family values issues!!!

I am a Democrat so what the GOP does internally does not usually bother me but I must comment that the idiot Tea Party folks are desroying your party by forcing all reasonable Republicans out of the race. Gloating over it is very unbecoming a major party but I guess if you keep making intelligence something to apologize for you won't have to worry about being a major party for long.

  22. The Real Tom Paine

@ Charlie in Maine: Perkins and his ilk don't want reasonable Republicans, they want robots who do what they are told ( all in the name of freedom, of course). Its people like Perkins that draw comparisons between the Religious Right here and the Taliban, and this sort of snarky, juvenile comment does not elevate Perkins or the GOP.

  23. Greg Kells

Just to be clear, Tony Perkins is NOT a conservative, or a representative of the Republican party. In fact there are very few conservatives even remaining in the GOP. Daniels made a very constructive and reasonable plea to the GOP to leave the Christian Coalition, Neo-Conservative faction out of important political discussions, and has been attacked by that faction. Many reasonable conservatives, myself included, have abandoned the GOP because of their pandering to the Falwell social conservatives. Goldwater warned us about the dangers of this faction over 30 years ago, and it has destroyed the party just as he predicted. Daniels stood a chance of bringing us back into the fold. When the party is brought back in line with true conservative beliefs, NOT ridiculous religious dogma and social conservatism, I will be happy to vote Republican again. Until then the Libertarian candidate or a conservative independent seem a better alternative. Unless, of course, by some miracle they nominate Ron Paul.

HMMMMM – Mr. Perkins, what would Jesus say about you mocking someone who decided he didn't need to be president and thought people could make their own free will choices on social issues? No wonder the GOP is left with a cadre of buffoons.

Yes that vetting process is the Great Equalizer....unless you have no shame like Newt and the Alaskan Barracuda.
Mrs.Daniels said "hell no!" and Mitch passed the gauntlet.
Now in regards to civility....what does this RethugliKKKlan Party know about civility? They've become strident cannibals.
You asked the man to run. He said no. The end...unless you're a Rethug.
