Poll: Texas voters shoot down a prez run for Perry

(CNN) - While his name continues to be floated as a possible 2012 Republican presidential candidate, Texas voters are saying no to a President Perry in a new poll.

According to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll, only four percent of Texas Republicans would support Republican Gov. Rick Perry in a bid for the White House.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin leads the pack of registered voters who expect to vote in the Lone Star state's GOP primary with 12 percent, followed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 11 percent. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Texas Rep. Ron Paul both received 10 percent. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann were tied with 7 percent.

Real estate mogul Donald Trump, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and former U.S. ambassador to China John Huntsman fell below 7 percent.

Since the poll was conducted, Huckabee, Trump and Daniels announced they will not run in the next election.

Although Perry, the longest serving governor in Texas history, says he will not run for president, he sometimes shows up on the wish list of Republican operatives.

Perry spokesman Mark Miner squashed the rumors Monday.

"Nothing has changed," Miner told CNN. "The governor has no intention of running for president."

The poll surveyed 800 registered voters between May 11 and May 18 and had a sampling error of plus or minus 4.98 percent.

Governor Perry would make Plain look smart. He is a figure head in a state where the Governor’s Power is relatively weak, but he is the face of the Republican establishment in this state. He is responsive to his powerful benefactors and here these loud mouth bullies pretty well run everything and stamp out opposition quite effectively.

Surprisingly many good folks that now identify themselves as Republicans do not actually embrace the Republican agenda these days, but they still could not wear the Democratic label as that it would be about as easy as growing their hair long and wearing hippy apparel. Change the image of the Democratic party and then they could easily wear that label or at least stay home and not vote.

@ Joe from CT, not Lieberman:

Add Santorum to your list, even though he never served as governor. He could not get elected dogcatcher in any township in PA, much less win a presidential primary or a general election.

When the election cycle comes around, everyone thinks they can be the next president. The problem becomes when they realize that because Faux thinks they are'The one" and they go test the waters, well its frigid. Newt is in because he has $$$ and can raise $$$. However, soon he will realize that he has a better chance of going to Mars than occupying the WH. The same goes for Rick S, his state booted him out of the senate by 15pts, Herman Cain will also go by the waste side, he lost his bid for the senate, Bachy is a Tea Bagging idiot. Tim Pawlenty & Huntsman and Mitt will be around for awhile but my $$ is on Mitt. Mitt will loose the general election cuz he is a empty suit and flipper. The contest to sleep through would be between T-Paw and President Obama because T-Paw is dull. So The smart move would be Huntsman but republican voters in electing their candidate to go against President Obama will make a mistake by selecting Mitt "Empty Suit" Romney.

  8. Obama 2012 - Job? Job? You don't need no STINKING JOB!!!

the property taxes here are higher than they are in California and many other States.
Governors do NOT set statewide property tax rates where I am from. They are set at the city and town level. Why are you trying to smear Perry with this? Is YOUR education so poor you don't know how your government works?

Perry, the career politician who let an innocent man die for a crime he didn't commit, has no business in Austin. I damn sure wouldn't want him in Washington. President Obama has done a magnificent job getting us out of the morass Bush got us into.

Scary thing is that Perry is dumber than Bush (W). I'd compare his IQ to that of a broken hammer, but that would be an insult to broken hammers.

Another empty headed empty suit from TX, you've got to be kidding. I'm from TX and wouldn't vote for this clown. His solution to problems is to secede. Ridiculous. He's a bigger imbecile than GW Bush.

I've lived and taught in Texas. Gov. Goodhair would ruin the country as surely as he has ruined Texas.
He cares more about his business buddies and his book deals than he does about the people of his state.
He has absolutely ruined the education system of that state. He stole money that was supposed to go to teachers and students and put it into the general fund of the state.
Hopefully, Texas voters will get rid of him soon.

If you're below Palin, Romney, Bachmann, Paul, and Trump in your home state......you might think about seceding from the country.

Coming from a Texan, Rick Perry would get mopped in an election period. May of you ask "how is does this guy keep gettign elected Govener?", well, outside of Houston, Dallas and San Antonio, the rest of this state is straw chewing, gun possesing, backwards necks! For christ sake, we have a town in Texas named "Cut & Shoot", that should tell you all what kind of state this is. Besides, Perry only keeps winning because of Third Party contenders like KiKi Freeman (I hope I spelled his name correctly) who split the non radical sanity vote, otherwise, Perry would have been gone a long time ago. And for those who think Texas is booming, well come here with your kids and find out what it is like to get a third world education and have your child in a classroom with 70 other students due to our idiot Govener keeps chipping away at education spending. Better yet, try moving to Texas and watch your house go into forecloser because you cannot afford the ridiculas property taxes here. No wait, how about moving to Texas and getting shot by some moron who has no business carrying a gun in a resturant like some lady did here in Houston while trying to enjoy her meal. Gun laws my a–!

The last figure I saw from a reputable source was that Texas is facing a $27 Billion deficit. As a result, many businesses are leaving Texas and new businesses are thinking twice about moving to Texas because they know a huge tax increase is right around the corner to save the state from bankruptcy. This tax increase will probably occur after Perry leaves office so he can try to fool people into believing he's not responsible for the deficit. But, it won't work because as is said "the facts don't lie".

I said he is a successful governor in my previous post which was clearly a mistake. This guy should get tried for treason. Seems like the TX voters are wising up yet they did give the most support to Palin in this poll. They apparently haven't learned the lesson. Obama/Biden 2012

At least there are some working brain cells down there in New Dumbphuchistan (formerly Texas) that see Perry as the hypocrite Texas clown boy that he truly is. W was bad enough, Texas. The nation will never forgive you for providing the first male sarah palin, in the form of Dubya (hiccup).

@Fayse: You are right, but I think we have a 28 Billion dollar short fall and 15 Billion dollar rainy day fund that the
State Legislature won't touch. They just keep firing teachers and the classrooms are getting bigger, but we are
still paying @10,000/mo for Perry to live in a State owned, mortgage free home. Hadenough? You betcha!

He doesn't know how to handle a natural disaster. He doesn't budget for wildfires and has the taxpayers of Texas footing the bill for his rental mansion while the Governor's mansion is under renovation. Wish Bill White had won instead.
