Palin launching multi-city tour amid 2012 buzz

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – Not two days ago, Sarah Palin was all but written off as a possible presidential contender by the national media and Republican insiders who considered the field of 2012 candidates to be settled.

Now, fittingly, one of the country's most unpredictable political figures is preparing to prove them wrong.

Palin announced on the SarahPAC website that she has laid the groundwork for a nationwide tour, beginning this weekend in the nation's capital, that will once again thrust her into the national spotlight as she decides whether to seek the GOP nomination.

"As we look to the future, we are propelled by America's past. It's imperative that we connect with our founders, our patriots, our challenges and victories to clearly see our way forward," she said, in a statement.

"A good way to do this is to appreciate the significance of our nation's historic sites, patriotic events and diverse cultures, which we'll do in the coming weeks on our "One Nation" tour.

The multi-city journey will take the former Alaska governor to a series of historical sites along the East Coast "that were key to the formation, survival and growth of the United States of America," a Palin source told CNN.

Other stops on the week-long tour are expected to include the civil war battlefields at Gettysburg and Antietam, Philadelphia–to visit the Liberty Bell–and one in New Hampshire.

The tour is primed to garner a flood of media attention thanks to the slow-starting presidential race.

It will begin over Memorial Day weekend, during Sunday's Rolling Thunder rally in Washington, an annual pilgrimage of bikers to honor fallen soldiers and prisoners of war.

News of the tour comes as speculation about Palin's presidential intentions reaches fever pitch.

After remaining relatively quiet throughout the spring, Palin recently rehired former advisers Jason Recher and Doug McMarlin, CNN has confirmed.

Recher and McMarlin organized travel logistics for Palin in the year following her return to Alaska after the 2008 presidential campaign, but they parted ways last year. The two men would be instrumental in mounting a presidential effort should she decide to run.

Palin has also given her blessing to a $1 million feature-length movie about her rise to the governor's office in Alaska that will be shown later this summer in the crucial early caucus and primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

She recently returned from a trip to the Middle East aimed at burnishing her foreign policy credentials.

And reports indicate that the Palins recently purchased a $1.7 million home in Scottsdale, Arizona, which would offer them a more feasible location to run a campaign from than far-away Alaska.

Palin's political action committee would not confirm the purchase or speculate on where a potential campaign would be based.

While political observers have dismissed her chances by pointing out her lack of activity in the early states that typically vault candidates the presidential nomination, her supporters insist that claim overlooks Palin's political mojo.

She is, her backers say, the only potential Republican candidate with the kind of star power required to skip early nominating hurdles like the network debates or the closely watched Ames Straw Poll and still be competitive.

CNN's Kevin Bohn contributed to this report.

For the most part, I vote republican, and this is embarrassing to me. Just go away Palin. Keep yourself out of politics and just make television shows showcasing your idiocy on TLC. If she ever becomes President I am seriously moving out of the US. Because at that point, we will have crossed the point of no return. I'll pack up my stuff, sell everything else on Craigslist, and be a cabana boy in Bora Bora for 4-8 years, I don't care. I hear they have good surf down there year round anyway.

I normally don't agree too much with Chuck Todd, but he hit the nail on the head this morning. He said that the only people that are happy about Palin running are 1) The other Republican candidates (because anybody else will look better than Palin in relative terms) and 2) The Democrats. She's probably thinking that if Newt can enter to the race to pay off his Tiffany credit card, there's got to be a good 500K – 1M in it for her too.

First, Yes! If she is going for it I think it would go a long way to define president Obama second term. In one debate, which she will need to participate in, President Obam will not only make the case but vault himself back into the WH. I do not care how many times she goes over her responses and tries to stick to talking points, the real Palin will come out and she will say something so ignorant, people will just shake their heads and ignore her. Republicans will vote for President Obama and President Obama will win by such a large margin, republicans will become the new green party.

Ultimately she needs to boost her visibility and relevance to keep up her future speaking fees. She's just priming the pump to get another spurt of cash before she fades away.

I doubt she'll bring anything positive to the table. Just more of the same: hate the poor, the immigrants (or anyone else mentioned on the Statue of LIberty), hate the liberals, hate Social Security (which keeps seniors fed), hate Medicare (which keeps them as healthy as possible), hate Muslims, hate Europeans, hate, hate, hate.

I honestly don't see how any nice and caring person can follow Sarah Palin.

Explain how you can win with no real world experience in nothing and just above a 12th grade education?
At least President Obama does have the education...We don't need both dumb and inexperienced!

all the Palin supporters that are going to post here should know this but won't accept it because they are in the blind fog of denial. Most progressives, Democrats and even some moderates HOPE that Palin runs and even gets the nomination. The ones that hope she doesn't run is the GOP, the Karl Rove types because they know she will be a disaster. If she runs I think CNN Political Ticker should get part of the credit for keeping her name in the news.
    Palin/Backmann 2012 U Betcha!

Make her explain why her daughter that had a child out of wedlock with one guy is now living with/having a sexual relationship with an African American . I know that she is so proud of her daughter keeping it real, I wonder how her KKK Tea Party buddies will like it?

I would vote for her if she has a brain transplant, a face alteration, radical attitude change and has her mouth sewn shut for the duration. No, come to think of it if she did all of the above, I still wouldn't vote for her for any position. Well, maybe dog catcher....No I like dogs.

Skipping debates is a good call Sarah. Wouldn't want to get tripped up by lame stream media reporters asking gotcha questions like "what newspapers do you read?" or even meaner ones like "please give our listeners a specific plan on what you would do to increase employment.". Can't wait to hear what vitriolic idiocy she spouts throughout the summer. I'm sure the bikers will drown her out this weekend, wish they would roll with her tour...

I am so excited about the possibility of a Palin for President Campaign. I think the ideal ticket would be Palin and Gov Walker of Wisconsin. Attractive, intelligent. I can see them shooting pigeons on the White House grounds now. If any of those pinko commie Democratics walk in front of the White House She will fire a shot gun loaded with Rock Salt at them so they know their place. VP-Walker can then sell the National Mall to developers for apartments so the GOP can admire the Capitol and White House from their living rooms.
