Todd Palin on possible 2012 campaign: 'This family has been tested'

Dillsburg, Pennsylvania (CNN) - Todd Palin told a handful of reporters Tuesday that his wife will decide on her own whether or not to seek the presidency. He is not pushing her one way or the other, he said.

But he emphasized that if the former Alaska governor does choose to embark on another national campaign, he and their children will be ready.

"This family has been tested," Palin said. "When people talk about how she was just plucked up out of Wasilla, you have to look at her career. Every step in her career is another step for the family, and we were prepared.

"These kids grew up around the mayor of small town," he added. "Local politics is in your face every day. It's not like you get on a plane and fly to D.C. or Juneau."

The normally-reserved Palin opened up about his family for a few moments after he and Sarah pulled over their "One Nation" bus at Coffee Express, a charming café in the central Pennsylvania town of Dillsburg.

Palin said there is a list of "pros and cons" that the family is weighing. "But this country, we have to get back on the right track," he said.

Echoing his wife's earlier declarations that the presidential field will take time to settle, Todd Palin said she has time to make up her mind.

The race is "a long ways away," he said - a calculation that is sure to be disputed by other Republicans who are already laying presidential groundwork in key early caucus and primary states.

"It's up to her what she decides to do," Palin said. "I am not pushing her either way. It's her decision."

He said Palin has no plans to invite reporters onto their tour bus for gab sessions, in the style of John McCain's 'Straight Talk Express' bus from the 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns.

"It's a different scenario," he said. "She's employed by Fox."

The Palins began day three of their much-hyped bus tour by ducking reporters to tour the battlefields at Gettysburg before making their way toward Philadelphia.

At the café in Dillsburg, they bought a few mid-morning cups of coffee and visited with a pair of locals who were caught off guard by the swarm of media that trailed them into the tiny shop.

She also took several questions from reporters, as she has done at nearly every stop on the tour, including one about ethanol subsidies, a controversial topic she will surely confront if she competes in the Iowa caucuses.

Fiscal conservatives oppose the subsidies an expensive federal handout, but Iowa's agriculture-fueled economy has depended on them for years.

Palin said she opposes energy subsidies, a statement that would put her at odds with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the putative frontrunner for the GOP nomination, but in line with another candidate, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

"I think that all of our energy subsidies need to be re-looked at today and eliminated," she said. "And we need to make sure that we're investing and allowing our businesses to invest in reliable energy products right now that aren't going to necessitate subsidies, because bottom line, we can't afford it."

Sarah Palin is ducking the press because she fears the lamestream media will twist her words by repeating them verbatim. She also ducks the mainstream media because she fears the truth would become known that she is ignorant. Finally, she ducks the media because they will not pay her speaking fee. It's all about the money for the Palins and the fact that Todd wants to be officially known as "The First Dude"..

Run, $arah, Run! You are the greatest gift--to the Democrats!

Please double down on the stupid and crazy and chose Paul Ryan as your running mate. If you were to win the GOP nomination and their base is ignorant enough to vote for you, I can hardly wait to watch President Obama who possesses more intelligence in his pinky that you have entirely, mop the floor with you during the debates. Good luck, $arah, because you need it. You are soooooo out of your league!

    @ Four and the Door...
I am guessing the same way President Obama had to prepare his family for the rude, crass, harsh and sad to say sometimes even racist treatment that he has been given by the right wingers and GOPers that you seem to overlook. It comes with the job.

It’s not only the ‘left’ who oppose Sarah Palin. Anyone with at least a 4th grade education should see what a laughable farce she really is. For you to ‘really like her’ says a lot.

ENOUGH! she has her PAC- she has her exploratory committee and she is on the road talking about politics- this makes her a candidate. Why is she being afforded the protection from being one? she has a pulpit on FOX yet does not have to abide by candidates rules.
Palin and all these would-be's need to be held to our election code standards. This goes for both parties. No more games

Being tested doesn't mean a thing. PASSING the test is what counts. Sorry Sarah, you FAILED.

I'm calling for the real journals/interviewers to come forward & ask this idiot serious questions. Stop playing around & treat her like you did H. Clinton. Why is everyone handling her with kid gloves? It is easy to criticize the POTUS every move, but how are you going to do better?
This bus tour is a joke. To think that people think this woman can hold a candle to a circus clown is beyond me. HUH...stop cutting money from education. This is an example that there is a problem with the system.

If all she can muster at these stops is 100 to 200 people then she ain't as hot as she thinks she is.....and tested? Todd baby you ain't seen nothing yet as far as tested goes......just let your bimbo wife run and you will see what tested really means........not only the Democrats will eat her up but the Republicans, independents and GOP canidates will start to really put Sarah in the hot seat.....running on bashing the President isn't going to get her elected.....she is going to have to go before the media and state to America what and HOW she will get this economy going, putting people back to work and cutting the debt without distroying Social Security and Medicare and throwing everyone under HER BUS that doesn't agree with her and her conservative ways.....this country is made up of more than just conservatives.......

@logic in LA. As long as she is under contract with FOX, she can't declare her candidacy, otherwise FOX would have to provide equal time to the other candidates whenever she makes these "uncampaign stops". This is why she keeps insisting she is not YET a candidate and her stops are not campaign stops. This is why Fred Thompson had to quit Law and Order before he declared in 2008.

Lies, lies, lies. We do not even have "hundreds of millions" of registered voters. We didn't have "hundreds of millions" of votes cast in 2008. I think you have dollars and sense mixed up. (yes dollars and sense)

Allow me to introduce you to reverse psychology. Most of the left loves her. Only a vocal minority on the left hate her. They love her so much that they pretend to hate her, which has the net result of strengthening the influence of the hard right on the Republican Party. And, someone running from the hard right would never win in 2012. The left would love to see her run again on the Republican ticket. Why people would want to see a rematch with her and Obama is defies logic.

The obsession with Sara Palin and if the Republicans are smart they should stay away from her because she will be there demise in the next presidential election. The media especially Fox that courts her as a viable candidate either do not have political intelligence or are dumb enough not to see where she came from, what she has done as governor, post she abandoned and her shallow political views. Palin has no two feet to stand on. She is politically ignorant, out of touch and has no place in our political system/ world politics that is getting tougher and tougher. We are creating media darlings instead of people with good political minds, commonsense that can lead our country. We are living in a world of political upheavals, instability and for sure we do not need Sara. Todd if I was you I will tell your wife to stay away before she makes a fool of herself. Doesn't she understand she is not qualified. looks does not but the White House.

If the Obama worshipers posting here weren't threatened by the prospects of Sara Palin beating their messiah, they wouldn't continually be tripping over themselves to demonize her. Unlike Obama, Palin is a patriot, who truly loves America, and our constitution. Contrary to your baseless rants, Palin is an extremely competent person, having successfully governed a state, while raising a family. Obama's credentials consist of voting present 125 times, and attending an anti-American, racist church for TWENTY YEARS. The American people are sick and tired of Obama's failed policies, which have resulted in a ruined economy, skyrocketing prices for everything, home values dropping, massive inflation, and sending billions of OUR dollars to Islamic countries who hate us. Sarah Palin would make a much better President than the empty suit, know as Barack Obama.

SAVE AMERICA ... DUMP OBAMA IN 2012 !!!

Hooray, Hooray for Sarah and Todd. Only the Palins can save our country. Sarah is the only one qualified to lead our country. She will make us strong again. She will be the best president of the USA. America loves the Palins. I think Obama will be in big trouble going up against her. Especially in a debate. Sarah will win hands down.

It is totally a matter of serving Sarah,....this loon has really taken wings and gouged the GOP supporters big time. And the best part is they love it.

Sarah Palin was so successful as a governor, she graduated early “Bitter Quitter”, she real is a “Dan Quayle” in heels. She clearly loves “dishing it out” but real can’t take it because she loves playing the victim card. Poor thing she fail as a VP candidate (her lie that her daughter was engaged was such a farce), her stand-up comic fiasco on the Jay Leno Show, please, her TV show canceled after declining rating, I guess her perpetual run for the White House is the only thing she can look forward to, but since she is a coward she will only throw small minded rocks, poor thing. Since we already had an idiot “W” that caused our current economic debacle, America knows not to trust the GOP fools who flaunt the idiocy.

Hey, Todd. While you and Sarah are touring around the country in your gas-guzzling bus, who is taking care of that Special Needs child your wife had a couple of years ago? You know – the one called Trig that has your name on the birth certificate as the father.
By the way, how does it feel to live in your wife's shadow? Does it help folks forget you are a secessionist who used to support an Alaska separatist movement? Bet having her as your means of support really looks good to the other oil workers you used to be able to hang with.

The only thing going on here is another money scam. Palin couldn't handle two years as governor as Alaska. She didn't have the courage to stay with her job when it was no longer fun. She lacks the intellectual, and psychological make-up to hold an elected office. She would be devoured as POTUS. She's made a pile of money as an "I'm willing to spread vitriol about anything Obama" and, like Trump, wants to keep her name in the press, to ensure the money keeps rolling. She is the worst type of person and a disgrace
