Top GOPer: Weiner should resign

(CNN) - Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called for the resignation of Rep. Anthony Weiner Tuesday, becoming the first major official to urge on Weiner to leave office.

"Congressman Weiner's actions and deception are unacceptable and he should resign," Priebus said in a statement. "We do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately, we need a resignation."

The Democratic New York congressman admitted Monday to carrying on inappropriate relationships with several women he met online, after saying he did not post a lewd picture on his Twitter account last week.

Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi called for a Congressional ethics investigation shortly after Weiner's press conference at which he said he would not resign his Congressional seat.

Priebus said Pelosi and Democratic National Committee Chairman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz either "believe members of Congress are held to a different set of standards or they believe these actions demand his resignation."

The National Republican Congressional Committee started their own campaign Tuesday, urging Democrats who received donations from Weiner to return the campaign money.

There was no direct response from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee but DCCC Chairman Rep. Steve Israel issued a statement in support of Pelosi's call Monday.

"Congressman Anthony Weiner engaged in a deep personal failure and inappropriate behavior that embarrassed himself, his family and the House," Israel said in a statement. "Ultimately, Anthony and his constituents will make a judgment about this failure."

"We do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately, we need a resignation."

In other words, don't confuse me with the facts; I'm trying to score some political points here.

What Rep. Weiner did was stupid, lewd, gross, offensive, inane, reprehensible, poorly thought out and disgusting. It wasn't illegal. If his constituents want to vote him out they'll have their chance; apart from that I think he should be held to the same standard as the rest of us. Social acts have social consequences and, for politicians, sometimes political consequences, but there are no laws against being a jerk.

Weiner said he was sorry to all those people that had supported him, wife, family, etc. but he didn't apolize to the people he represented that didn't support him. What's up with that, don't they count? If you're a representative of the people I thought it was to all the people in your district, my mistake!!! He needs to go!!

It's only wrong if you get caught, and even then, it's only illegal if you don't get away with it. Nothing to be ashamed of. Pretend you are sorry and then go back and do it again. This is America, land of the free to do whatever you like because you are a unique individual with unique talents, except we're all equal, blah blah blah.

No wonder this place is a dump.

Either he resigns or the democrat party will be branded with this and they'll have even less of a chance at winning the presidency than they already have. Even Pelosi knows this. Hopefully Pelosi isn't just pandering to the coutnry (as usual) just to calm the situation down.

Preibus needs to clean his own house first, when he calls for Vitters resignation, maybe we should listen. Where is the media on Vitter?

The man is a disgrace. I hope he stays in office because he has absolutely no credability. Weiner has always acted as if he was smarter, more ethical and moral and this puts all that to bed. His ability to scream moral equivalents is gone as is his yearning to be mayor of NY but I am sure he is safe in his current seat.

    1. Larry Craig was actually arrested and charged by authorities for his lewd behavior. He defiantly refused to resign, and was not forced to.

    2. If Weiner's pictures were so "lewd" why is CNN showing them on the air. His intent with the pictures was not to be public, but CNN showing me these scandalously lewd pictures is intentionally public.

He should resign, i agree with the GOPer he should put his resignation right on top of David Vitter's. IF we are going to do it do it in order.

Why should ANYBODY waste time and OUR money on investigating what this fool has already admitted to?

No tolerance for abhorant behavior. Elected officials should know better. Resign or be thrown out.

I am so tired of the finger pointing game. Take them issue by issue. Why can't Politicians keep their pants zipped up and do the job we sent them there to do! They should be honest in their political and personal issues and if they aren't they should go home!

Argue whether he should resign or not. But one thing is clear: The Democratic leadership called on republicans of late to resign when similar scandals occurred. This time, they are launching an ethics probe instead. That is extremely hypocritical. It's also idiotic, as it stretches this scandal out, keeps it in the public eye and possibly reveals even more damaging discoveries. Way to go, Democratic leadership, not only are you hypocrites, but you are also very dumb.

How about bush lying us into Iraq?
How about criminal charges against Breitbart for black mailing a federal employee. (If I don't get an appology from Weiner, I'll release the other photo's). That's blackmail. That IS illegal.

He is a smart man, well spoken and I agreed with many of the principles he espoused. Sadly, he has to go. He will be missed.

It is not a question of right or wrong nor is it a question of it being a personal matter, but rather, the issue is that he exposed his fatal, personality flaw and he is no longer effective as a congressman and he is a distraction to the Democrates. Unfortunately this particular personality flaw is common to politicians in general, of either party. Once detected, the politicians must be weeded out.

Thank goodness his fatal personality flaw was detected early, before he could progress very far, unlike Former Speaker of the House Newt, Former President Clinton and Senator Edwards.

The ONLY reason democrats are against Weiner now is because they know for a fact that if they aren't they have ZERO chance at winning anything in the foreseeable future.

It's delightful to hear that the Republicans want Anthony Weiner to resign. The Republicans are now so associated with radical right-wing extremism that we Brooklynites are likely to elect a replacement for Weiner that will so liberal that he/she will turn out to be the Republicans' worst nightmare!
