Top GOPer: Weiner should resign

(CNN) - Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus called for the resignation of Rep. Anthony Weiner Tuesday, becoming the first major official to urge on Weiner to leave office.

"Congressman Weiner's actions and deception are unacceptable and he should resign," Priebus said in a statement. "We do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately, we need a resignation."

The Democratic New York congressman admitted Monday to carrying on inappropriate relationships with several women he met online, after saying he did not post a lewd picture on his Twitter account last week.

Democratic Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi called for a Congressional ethics investigation shortly after Weiner's press conference at which he said he would not resign his Congressional seat.

Priebus said Pelosi and Democratic National Committee Chairman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz either "believe members of Congress are held to a different set of standards or they believe these actions demand his resignation."

The National Republican Congressional Committee started their own campaign Tuesday, urging Democrats who received donations from Weiner to return the campaign money.

There was no direct response from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee but DCCC Chairman Rep. Steve Israel issued a statement in support of Pelosi's call Monday.

"Congressman Anthony Weiner engaged in a deep personal failure and inappropriate behavior that embarrassed himself, his family and the House," Israel said in a statement. "Ultimately, Anthony and his constituents will make a judgment about this failure."

I guarantee some of those postings were done from his office PC even though he has stated it did not. My company fired an individual 6 months ago for downloading inappropriate material and that is no different. Well we no politicians have no standards but in the real world you get fired for such things. This is going to drag on since he lied I am sure the ethics committee will be going through it in ridiculous detail – get ready for the exam.

None of the politicians on either side of the aisle are free of scandalous behavior. Mr. Weiner's lewd pictures may be a bit vulgar. What was he thinking as a married man. Then why did he marry? We certainly expect this type of silly behavior from the persons we elected to represent us. In his own interest he should resign. How can he show his face in the Capitol? sad.

Dear California Republican. Keep on hopin. The last major Republican that YOUR state has even been able to elect has now had to admit that he had an illegitimate child, hid the fact from his constituents AND his wife...and is now living in disgrace and likely divorce. And where are there any other credible Republicans in California? Meanwhile, even if Weiner resigns...we DemocratIC Brooklynites will no-doubt elect someone who will make Pelosi look like, conservative as you!

Yes at least he didn't literally sleep with the DC Madame hookers like Vitter...or a cheat by sleeping with a lobbyist's wife, then have his parents cut a check for $100K like Ensign to cover it up...or don't get me started on Gov. Schwartzenegger scheme to cover up the child he fostered sleeping with the maid.

Pelosi is only investigating to calm things down a bit for the moment. Remember that it's politicians that have made lying and unethical conduct acceptable in this country.

Lol, this guy's a clown. I only point out Senator Vitter from Louisana was in a much, much, much, much worst sex scandal and remarkably he's still serving. Hypocrite much?

Weiner made the wrong mistake at the worst of times. The self-designed standard bearer of political integrity and honesty lied to the American people. He betrayed the sacred trust.

Where were they when the David (diaper) Vitter scandal broke? Why is that man still in office? An apology was fine for him and he actually hooked up with a prostitute who put a diaper on him.

Here in Georgia, about two years ago, one of our Congressmen was facing serious ethics charges. He stepped down, the day the results of the charges were to be made public.

He is now our Governor, Nathan Deal, Republican.

I've been so disappointed by CNN "News". You're now reporting in a 'National Enquirer' fashion with gossip & issues that are certainly NOT news! Any wonder why the GOP would want Weiner to go? He's EFFECTIVE in his arguments and has been a thorn in their side for years! THAT's why they sent their attack dog on him! Sadly, Weiner fell right into their hands! However, if other more nefarious GOP'ers didn't have to resign, neither should he. He should call them out on their religious dogma and seek and claim forgiveness by the Lord who desires a "contrite" heart! IF they practice what they preach, guess they'll have to forgive him too! Naahhhh!!!!

We've had these pathetic stupid men in both parties who think with their "liitle brain". No need to compete here, guys. So many of you are sooo dumb in these things.

I agree that Congressman Weiner should resign. He betrayed the people's trust because he lied about his poor judgement. But at the same time I cannot believe the hyprocisy on behalf of the Republican leadership. Did they demand that Senator Vitter resign when it was discoverd that he cheated on his wife?

Whatever, moron. Given Vitter, Sanford, Craig, etc., the GOP should just keep their collective mouths shut.

This had so national security issue involved. There was no groping or other physical interaction with those that were underage. This is just something that should go away.

Somebody tell Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus that Weiner will resign just as soon as Vitter does for having sex with that prostitute after extolling the virtues of marriage from his "family values" soapbox.

All Weiner has to do is move into the "C-Street" Family house, get Dr. Coburn (R-OK) to forgive him, and he will enter the pearly gates ahead of all others.

That being said, Weiner GTFO – you are a lair, a cheat and a scumbag. Resign immediately if not sooner.

Hey buddy while you are it – let's hear you calling for GOP Vitter resignation at the same time. And why did and the GOP rtook so long for Ensign to resign?

Senator Colburn is also "in the mix" with Senator Ensign – the chief negotiator on Ensign's behalf. Let's hear you call for Senator Colburn's resignation too!!!!

Priebus better get his own [R] house in order before he goes off and comments on anybody else's problems. Priebus didn't vote for Weiner, Priebus is not a constituent....his opinion is MEANINGLESS. Meaningless opinions, that is the modern-day calling card of the [R] party.

I think the [D]s got this handled without any mindless meddling from [R]s.

"We do not need an investigation to know he lied and acted inappropriately, we need a resignation." If lying and acting inappropriately is the standard for calling for one to resign, there would be no republicans left in office.

Unlike conservatives, liberals do not campaign under the notion of "Family Values".

Vitter, et al, are hypocrites of the highest order. The same can not be said about Weiner.
