New York (CNN) –Texas Governor Rick Perry, who has said he is considering running for the Republican presidential nomination, is in the middle of a cross country swing talking to key constituencies including those in the Big Apple.
On Tuesday night he addresses about 200 at a sold-out New York County Republican dinner. At the dinner Perry is replacing Donald Trump, who pulled out after he decided not to run for president.
This last weekend he spoke to a Hispanic anti-abortion rights group in California and later this week he speaks with other contenders at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans.
New York County Republican chairman Dan Isaacs told CNN Perry's appearance at the Tuesday dinner has drawn more attention than when Trump was going to be the keynote speaker.
"Among active Republican there is a lot interest to meet the governor."
While in New York, Perry met Tuesday afternoon with about 30 leading GOP donors– businessmen, Wall Street types and attorneys as well as other key party leaders over lunch. Issacs said he suggested the get together, and Perry agreed.
Perry wasn't talking much as he left the lunch and rushed to his waiting motorcade but when asked by CNN about a run for president he said, "I may run... in Central Park later."
Kidding with the media aside, when pressed last month about running for President, Perry said "I'm going to think about it."
Perry has a strong base among the party's social conservative activists and has a strong job creation record that he would tout if he did get into the race although critics point out the state has problems with poverty. A recent poll of Texans showed only 4 percent of them wanted Perry to run.
A CNN Opinion Research poll last month showed 50 percent of Americans did not want Perry to run for President while 40 percent said they did.
One thing that has increased attention on Perry is the fact that two of Newt Gingrich's key campaign operatives who were part of the mass resignations last week are close to Perry. Sources with knowledge of the situation have said the exodus from Gingrich's campaign was not related to the governor's deliberations.
CNN New York Producer Julian Cummings contributed to this report.

what is he doing in a phoren country!!!
Problems with poverty? Is that the best they can point to in describing the gutting of Texas Perry has presided over? He has destroyed education in the state, he has pandered to business by gutting enforcement of safelty and health regulations, he has threatened to secede from the Union on numerous occasions, and he has shamelessly played to a base that is FAR more conservative than the general electorate is. He would lead the GOP off a cliff into an abyss so vast, they would be wishing for Palin at the top of the ticket. By all means, Rick, run.
Yet another clown trying to join the gaggle of clowns-in-waiting.
Notice how in one of the two political parties those wearing the tin-foil hats are actually allowed to rise to the top?
Did anyone other than me see that "Deer In The Head Lights Look" when Gov. Perry was asked if he was going to think about running for POTUS? He reminded me of Bush #43 when he responded, "I'm going to think about it........I think about a lot of stuff."
That's all we need is another GWB going under the name of Rick Perry.
Wow! If you squint just a little bit, Perry looks JUST LIKE GW Bush!.
Kids, I'm NEVER voting for a Texas Republican, or anyone with the last name of Bush EVER again!
This guy is a for sure loser? He wants Texas to be another country? Thats real "American" to want that? This guy is a scam, and everyway just like Bush! Go right ahead and vote "America" under, repugs?? Toss your "Grandma " and the elderly in front of a "Train"??? Your the ones that are going to pay for your Grandmas medical bills!!! Hope you have "Big Money????? lol!
A recent poll of Texans showed only 4 percent of them wanted Perry to run.
Only 4%. What was the margin of error? Wow.
Only 4%. That means he is either a goober or a god.
Perry's fiddling while Texas burns ...
...I think you mean, he's running for president of the state of texas. Not, the united States..............
Maybe he can talk NY into seceding from the Union too? Idiot!
Perry doesn`t want to be part of the United States so we won`t accept him as President. He`ll have to live with the consequence of shootin` off his big, rude, trash talkin, GOP mouth.
No more yippy-i-yo-ki-yay cowboy types from Texas in the Whitehouse. We are still recovering from the last one!
Here's how to rise up in the ranks of the GOP (no need for a record of accomplishment, new ideas or ideas that will actually make things better for our country):
1. Be willing to say inflammatory things, stoking the GOP base with lies, fear, hatred and division about how President Obama is taking down our country (all evidence to the contrary).
2. Be willing to lie about your own record of public service (or lack thereof).
3. Be willing to travel around the country, spouting nonsense. Ditto with going on Fox.
4. Be willing to pretend you're going to run for president.
5. Be willing to take money from desperate, ignorant people who stupidly believe anything you say.
6. Be willing to have someone ghost-write a book for you, all about your "love" for America.
After the GOP is done using you as a distraction from the real issues of the day, angle for a job at Fox or become a "consultant" at one of the rightwing think-tanks.
How all these Republican yahoos sleep at night is beyond me ...
Does he have a passport to get back into this country, oops or state? Didn't he want to secede from the Union? He is another traitor and how people can really think that these people (like the AK bimbo) who are not real Americans (to coin their phrase) care about this country.
If I were perry the secessionist I wouldn't leave texas because one of these days Mexico is bound to take it back and put the it back where it belongs.
Strong job creation? Does this include illegals? His record on air pollution sucks! He remind me of the rep from CA, I forget his name, but he is another hypocrite. He goes on a show and says one thing and then says something else somewhere else. It all depends on the audience and the adulation these cretins want to receive.
Looks like Perry is seceding from Texas.
Ah yes, THAT texas governor! He wants to run the very federal government that he threatened to secede from! Quite a clown.
Frankly, the US has had enough of presidents from Teeeexas for a while.
Rick Perry: Voted Most Likely to Seceed.
Looks like Perry is the next Great White Dope the delusional GOBPbaggin' teatards consider electable. The fact is, sane people will quickly recognize Perry's trademarked Greedy Old Pig hypocrisy of preaching fiscal responsibility while practicing just the opposite (fiscal irresponsibility). Perry was warned a few years ago that he was leading Texas down the road to financial ruin and, rather than get his house in order, he took money from the rainy day fund, handed out tax breaks (there's a SHOCKER!) and has now blown a billion dollar hole in the Texas budget. This country has suffered enough at the hands of idiotic former Texas governors, so we won't be stupid enough to make that disastrous mistake again.
Please spare us. I have serious doubts this country can survive another Texas politician in the White House.
Since being elected Perry has done lets see.......
Book tours, gone LA, now NYC. All this traveling, but hasn't done jack sh^% in the state of Texas.
But takes every chance he gets to take a swipe at President Obama for not correcting the problems that HE ( Perry ) should be in Texas taking care of. Really ?
As I've said before. As a native Bostonian, there are some truly nive people in Texas.
But conservatives here are some of the most ignorant and DUMBEST voting block in this entire country. They would elect PUTIN before they elect Obama just out of spite.
I'll never understand the voting logic of a Texas conservative.
