Senate fails to halt ethanol tax breaks

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - Ethanol subsidies are still alive and kickin'.

The Senate rejected an amendment Tuesday that would have put an abrupt stop to tax breaks and incentives for corn-based ethanol products popular with farm-state lawmakers.

If you do not like the ethanol subsidy, then first get the ethanol removed from the gasoline. As I recall, the subsidy was put in place to stabilize the cost of corn, and keep it free from the topsy-turvy price changes associated with a barrel of oil. Just imagine the impace on food costs if speculators began piddling with corn the same way they do with oil.

Where are all those loud mouthed GOP politicians and bloggers that are always talking about the need to cut spending? THIS IS FEDERAL SPENDING!

How about all those that ignorantly yap about America being a "FREE MARKET ECONOMY"? Giving a handout to a particular industry IS NOT a free market.

The President constantly is given blame by Rightwing Conservatives for spending and being a "socialist" that is out to destroy capitalism. The support for these subsidies by GOP Senators lays that LIE bare.

We should eliminate subsidies to the Oil&Gas industry 1st.

They are highly profitable & secure. Take that "profit assurance" money away from them and PAY DOWN the National debt!

Ethanol subsides can stay for 3 years bu need to go the way of the doo-doo bird.

Environmental advocates have long questioned the ecological benefit of ethanol, which is blended with gasoline, claiming that it takes as much energy to produce as it yields.

Same thing for most solar panels, believe it or not. Don't get me wrong, I help manufacture for the solar power industry so I have a vested interest in seeing it survive. But it is in no way appropriate now to have this as a critical focus for government effort to create jobs. We can throw a lot of money at clean energy, but understand these are all heavily subsidized jobs, not the kind of jobs that will save our economy.

That's the Dems, then. They control the Senate.

Continuing to waste the taxpayer's money, as usual.

i read the whole article. What this tells me is that the REPUBLICANS (mostly) are listening to Grover Norquist and NOT listening to the US Citizens.

A vote for a republican is a vote for Grover Norquist (NEVER raise taxess contract he forces them to sign). See what you idiots on the right are doing to the USA?
