Cain warmly embraced at conservative forum despite low poll numbers

Minneapolis (CNN) - If applause, enthusiasm and sustained ovations are any indication, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain is a strong favorite of committed conservatives - boding well for his campaign despite a low, but rising, standing in several polls.

Those gathered at the final session on the final day of the RightOnline conference on Saturday evening in Minnesota warmly welcomed the former Godfather's Pizza CEO, then repeatedly interrupted his speech with adoring applause.

GOP tensions on display at Republican Leadership Conference

New Orleans (CNN) - Conservative after conservative took the stage and railed against President Barack Obama at this week's Republican Leadership Conference, a three-day gathering of presidential candidates, party activists and political operatives in New Orleans.

But their sharp attacks were interrupted by stern warnings from party leaders to remain focused on winning in November 2012 instead of becoming preoccupied with ideology, litmus tests or silly distractions.

Pawlenty takes another jab at Romney

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) - In front of a friendly group of conservatives, Tim Pawlenty once again did what he declined to do while standing next to Mitt Romney in Monday’s GOP debate: go on the attack against his presidential rival.

At the RightOnline conference in Minneapolis on Saturday, the former Minnesota governor and presidential candidate re-stated a fresh line he’s recently used: that the former Massachusetts governor is a “co-conspirator” in the nation’s health care law that conservatives love to hate.

Perry wows at Republican conference amid 2012 buzz

New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) – As speculation mounts about his presidential ambitions, Texas Gov. Rick Perry delivered a rousing and unapologetic defense of conservative principles on Saturday at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans.

Perry repeatedly brought an audience of hundreds of Republican activists to their feet with a small government message reminiscent of the one that helped him win an unprecedented third term as governor last November.

A bipartisan win on the links

Washington (CNN) - President Obama and Speaker Boehner found themselves on the same side for once Saturday - teaming up to beat Vice President Biden and Ohio Gov. John Kasich on the golf course in a nail-biter that was decided on the 18th hole.

The victory netted the winning team $2 apiece, according to a joint statement released by the White House and the Speaker’s office. After finishing their round, the foursome headed to the patio of the course’s clubhouse to grab a cold drink, catch some U.S. Open coverage and visit with service members.

Huntsman surprises in big GOP straw poll

New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) - Jon Huntsman was a no-show at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, but the former Utah governor raised eyebrows with a surprising second place in the conference’s 2012 presidential straw poll Saturday.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who delivered a fiery and well-attended speech here in Friday, continued his record of strong straw poll performances and won the vote outright with 612 votes. Huntsman came next with 382 votes.

Perry making early splash at major GOP gathering

New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) – Rick Perry doesn't speak for a few hours here at the Republican Leadership Conference, but the longtime governor from neighboring Texas, who's flirting with a bid for the GOP presidential nomination, is already getting positive reviews from this partisan crowd.

As Perry arrived Saturday morning for a book signing, the crowd of at least 100 people briefly chanted "run Rick, run." His book, entitled “Fed Up,” was released last year.

Perry, who is scheduled to address the conference later Saturday afternoon, looked and sounded a bit like a presidential candidate this past week when speaking at Republican party gathering in New York City and an anti-abortion event in California.

Lessons this Father’s Day from the father-in-chief

(CNN) – President Obama announced Saturday that he’s now working two jobs – President of the United States and assistant basketball coach.

In his weekly address, Obama said kids want their fathers “to be a part of their lives,” and that he’s a part of his daughter Sasha’s life in part by coaching some of her basketball games.

“It was a lot of fun – even if Sasha rolled her eyes when her dad voiced his displeasure with the refs,” Obama said.
