Bristol Palin's memoir hits stores

(CNN) - At 20-years-old, Bristol Palin already has a memoir. In her tell-all book, titled "Not Afraid Of Life: My Journey So Far," which hit shelves Tuesday, the oldest daughter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin dishes on pregnancy to politics.

The memoir details Bristol's unplanned, teenage pregnancy, her days on the 2008 campaign trail with the McCains, and her on-again, off-again relationship with Levi Johnston, the father of her child. (Levi has his own book set to release this fall.)

Bristol starts off her story with the night her virginity was "stolen" by Johnston, saying she had succumbed for the first time in her life to the "woozy charms" of wine coolers while on a camping trip with friends. She woke up the following morning next to Johnston's empty sleeping bag in a tent and found out that the two had slept together–an event, she writes, she couldn't recall.

"I could tell by the evidence in the tent that all of my plans, my promises, and my moral standards had disappeared in one awful night in a series of bad decisions," Bristol writes, concluding that she immediately felt obligated to marry Johnston, a boy she had a crush on since the seventh grade.

Bristol recounts her older brother, Track, growing furious when overhearing on the phone what his sister had done with Johnston. Track allegedly stormed off to Johnston's house, seemingly determined to settle the matter violently.

"Let's just say Track was an 'abstinence only' advocate when it came to his sisters, and he was ready to enforce that philosophy with his fists," Bristol writes, although she doesn't fully disclose what happened at Johnston's house.

The book describes Johnston as a disloyal boyfriend who had "occasional romps with other girls."

To make up for it, he showered Bristol with gifts, including Coach purses, Abercrombie clothing, and designer rain boots. In return, she forgave Johnston and started sleeping with him again with the hope that he would stop cheating.

"It was part 'thank you,' part 'security deposit," she writes.

Later, Bristol, who was 17 at the time, realized she was one month pregnant–a fact confirmed by the eight home pregnancy tests she bought with her friend. Bristol was shocked by the results, claiming she had been on birth control.

And her boyfriend's alleged response? The baby "better be a f****** boy."

Her book also features stories about the 2008 presidential race, including drama between Bristol and Meghan McCain, the daughter of Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Bristol described Meghan as a demanding diva who constantly complained and compared her family to the Palins. The book also reveals moments of Meghan being openly rude to campaign staff and family.

Meghan responded on Twitter to Bristol's accusations Tuesday with a link to a video from 2008 that shows her excited about her father's choice for vice president.

And in the book, Meghan's mother, Cindy McCain, had her own words of comfort for Bristol. While waiting for John McCain to arrive at a Minneapolis airport for the 2008 Republican convention, Cindy pulled Bristol aside on the tarmac to have a little chat, the book said.

"Bristol, I have three things I want to tell you," she said. "I just want you to know that I want to be one of the first people to hold your baby. Also, I want to go to your wedding when it comes together, and lastly, [...] John and I want to be godparents of your child."

Bristol was left speechless by their conversation.

"I had just met her, and I wondered why she wanted any type of guardianship over my child," Bristol writes.

Geesh, if all it took was a couple of bottles of wine coolers, I would've taken her virginity. This family is the hemorrhoids on America's tukas. I really cannot understand how people like this become popular. They are like looking at a bad car accident. You wanna turn away but it's also intriguing.

BTW, if Sarah Palin thought for ONE SECOND that the pregnancy wasn't 100% consensual, she would have thrown Levi in prison after she had every Alaska State Trooper personally beat the crap of him and had him dragged behind Todd's dog sled for the entire Iditarod. Remember, this is the woman who used state funds and even gave Todd a government office to wage a personal smear campaign against her sister's husband when they were getting a divorce.

Is this young woman's 15 minutes up already? She is at best a clown when she tries to sit her and substantiate that she was innocent which is far from the truth. If she was sexually active her Mom should have sat her down and told her to obstane (Yea right) or put her behind on he pill.

For her to blame it on alcohol and Levi is pretty shallow. Please young lady close your mouth as when you open it you remove all doubt of your intellect.

Not worth a comment, but I will make one. Is this not the Beverly Hillbillys? But the Clampets were at least honest people.

Blaming someone else for stealing something which was only hers to give is so much easier than actually taking responsibility.

Why are all the comments ripping Bristol? I am not a big fan of Bristol, but we need to hold young men to higher standards than this – get someone drunk and then take advantage of them? This is too quickly accepted and the young woman is always blamed and labeled. This is a form of rape and should be called what it is.

Please God....save us from your followers. Personally, I don't understand why this story is found in the political section, except for the fact that if she wasn't the daughter of the Half-Governer of Alaska and failed Republican VP candidate, this book wouldn't even get published. Her story is little different than that of thousands, maybe even millions of other girls raised in a conservative environment, and naive about the ways of love and sex.

"I could tell by the evidence in the tent that all of my plans, my promises, and my moral standards had disappeared in one awful night in a series of bad decisions," yet she was on birth control and was surprised she was pregnant.

    Poor, silly girl.

Please do not give these people anymore press. Frankly, this family is dysfunctional, and we do not need to hear about this crap.

Hey America, Don't be so hard on the young lady. Give her a little credit. Most women have their virginity "stolen" in the back seat of a car. At least she opted for a tent. It was roomier and no one got leg cramps. Yo Bristol, "stolen" virginity is called "rape" in this country. It is a felony and there is no statute of limitations on it. Why not file charges now? It's probably because there are too many witnesses to the fact that it wasn't "stolen", it was "given away." You're just like your mama! Speaking of which, why isn't she in the race for the Republican nomination? She knows your family will be exposed to the core and everyone who don't know, will know that you are a most dysfunctional group. But I like y'all...I need a gimmick to make some big money too. Got any ideas???

I met a guy once who ran for city council at 18 (while still in high school) and won the election for mayor at 20. Some months back I talked to a 20-something marine who had amazing stories of his deployments to Afghanistan. There's that teen who climbed Mt. Everest and 20-something guys and girls in Egypt that helped overthrow a dictator. They all chose to embark on interesting, extraordinary and in some cases heroic adventures. Bristol Palin, on the other hand, got drunk and preagnant, then levereaged her mother's fame to make more money in a year than most college graduates will make in a decade. Why would anyone want to read about that?

  21. Reality Check

Palin says she was on birth control at the time she got pregnant, so what exactly were the moral standards she claims to have lost? That she would not have sex in a tent? She implies that she continued having sex and that she took favors in exchange. Of course she also opens up questions about Track's moral (double) standards and proclivity towards violence, or maybe he was a virgin until he married.
@Kerry, I don't think many people here have ill feelings towards Bristol Palin, but resent being sold this obvious bull hockey. If Palin decides to donate all the proceeds to charities for pregnant teens, I'll believe it is not just another con job.

Is Bristol sure her virginity was stolen? If she is anything like her mother she probably sold it.

The comment about having sex with Levi Johnson as a security deposit is a howl. As George Bernhard Shaw said, we have establshed what you are, now we just need to find out the price.
