Bristol Palin's memoir hits stores

(CNN) - At 20-years-old, Bristol Palin already has a memoir. In her tell-all book, titled "Not Afraid Of Life: My Journey So Far," which hit shelves Tuesday, the oldest daughter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin dishes on pregnancy to politics.

The memoir details Bristol's unplanned, teenage pregnancy, her days on the 2008 campaign trail with the McCains, and her on-again, off-again relationship with Levi Johnston, the father of her child. (Levi has his own book set to release this fall.)

Bristol starts off her story with the night her virginity was "stolen" by Johnston, saying she had succumbed for the first time in her life to the "woozy charms" of wine coolers while on a camping trip with friends. She woke up the following morning next to Johnston's empty sleeping bag in a tent and found out that the two had slept together–an event, she writes, she couldn't recall.

"I could tell by the evidence in the tent that all of my plans, my promises, and my moral standards had disappeared in one awful night in a series of bad decisions," Bristol writes, concluding that she immediately felt obligated to marry Johnston, a boy she had a crush on since the seventh grade.

Bristol recounts her older brother, Track, growing furious when overhearing on the phone what his sister had done with Johnston. Track allegedly stormed off to Johnston's house, seemingly determined to settle the matter violently.

"Let's just say Track was an 'abstinence only' advocate when it came to his sisters, and he was ready to enforce that philosophy with his fists," Bristol writes, although she doesn't fully disclose what happened at Johnston's house.

The book describes Johnston as a disloyal boyfriend who had "occasional romps with other girls."

To make up for it, he showered Bristol with gifts, including Coach purses, Abercrombie clothing, and designer rain boots. In return, she forgave Johnston and started sleeping with him again with the hope that he would stop cheating.

"It was part 'thank you,' part 'security deposit," she writes.

Later, Bristol, who was 17 at the time, realized she was one month pregnant–a fact confirmed by the eight home pregnancy tests she bought with her friend. Bristol was shocked by the results, claiming she had been on birth control.

And her boyfriend's alleged response? The baby "better be a f****** boy."

Her book also features stories about the 2008 presidential race, including drama between Bristol and Meghan McCain, the daughter of Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Bristol described Meghan as a demanding diva who constantly complained and compared her family to the Palins. The book also reveals moments of Meghan being openly rude to campaign staff and family.

Meghan responded on Twitter to Bristol's accusations Tuesday with a link to a video from 2008 that shows her excited about her father's choice for vice president.

And in the book, Meghan's mother, Cindy McCain, had her own words of comfort for Bristol. While waiting for John McCain to arrive at a Minneapolis airport for the 2008 Republican convention, Cindy pulled Bristol aside on the tarmac to have a little chat, the book said.

"Bristol, I have three things I want to tell you," she said. "I just want you to know that I want to be one of the first people to hold your baby. Also, I want to go to your wedding when it comes together, and lastly, [...] John and I want to be godparents of your child."

Bristol was left speechless by their conversation.

"I had just met her, and I wondered why she wanted any type of guardianship over my child," Bristol writes.

Right! She and her mom are both victims. Hilarious! That what's known as NOT taking responsibility for your actions/behavior. No wonder that family is so damn dysfunctional.

A memoir at age 20? WTF is she thinking? Nada, zilch! She should shut her mouth and try to develop her mind, She claims she couldn't remember how Levi "stole her viginity"? What a ludicrous tragedy! You should have known that two aspirin held between your knees does not constitute birth control. This book will really appeal to the religious right, right?

How could your "moral standard" exist while on birth control pills? Was this a planned robbery of her virginity? The thought process of this family is void of thought or processing... SMH

So let me get this straight. We have the daughter of a VP candidate, who preaches "moral/family values", spilling her beans about underage drinking, teenage sex and teen pregnancy. Am I the only seeing the hypocrisy here?

Funny while I read this total denial of her part in the whole thing I keep imagining Ricardo Montalban saying, 'Welcome, to fantasy island!"

Oh look a Palin that refuses to take responsibility for her own bad decisions and stupidity so she blames someone else. Shocking.

It's really a shame that conservative thought, once articulated by Ronald Reagan and programs hosted by the likes of William F. Buckley, has degenerated into this narcissistic voodoo promulgated by witless loudmouths. Whether it's the Palins, repulsive personalities on 'talk radio', or the dry-drunk Beck, this idiocy is mobilizing a crazy liberal agenda. It effectively got Obama elected, and everybody knows it. You really can't sell good-citizen values while making it obvious you have none of your own whatsoever.

Young Bristol is fishing for a reality show, I see. If that IS in fact Bristol – seeing as how she looks nothing like her former self.

I have great respect and admiration for Gov Palin, but this idiocy of teen and 20 somethings thinking their lives, screwed up as they are, are of any interest to most Americans is getting boring. Its a comment on how screwed up our culture is that thousands will likely line up to buy this stuff.

CNN, this is ridiculous. She is not a role model for children.........she is a spoiled brat who for some reason is making a lot of money off the fact she was slut in high school and her mom is a very attractive quitter (quitter because she left the job she was elected to because obviously she feels no sense of duty to her country or state). Its not Bristols fault she is trying to make a buck......but it is your fault, cnn, for talking about her and pretending its in any way newsworthy. In the south we have names for families like the Palins........its redneck/white trash, take your pick. When a "news" organization starts giving updates on people like this you know what you turn into? A tabloid. Please, STOP TALKING ABOUT THE PALINS.

The sad thing is that people in America are just stupid enough to buy this garbage. I hope they prove me wrong. This just confirms that the Palins are about nothing more than making money off total schlock.

What parents in their right minds allow their teenage daughter to go on a coed, unchaperoned, overnight camping trip? I've got kids, and there's *no way* I would allow them to do that! What did they think they'd be doing – finding a cure for cancer?

If she where 17 at the time of the stolen virginity why didn't see file charges for date rape.......

    June 22, 2011 02:55 pm at 2:55 pm |
  24. Seriously?

Honey, if he had sex with you while you were blackout drunk, and you didn't want to have sex, then you were raped and need to press charges. You do realize that when you made up this story, you accused him of rape, right?

Well, I'm just glad we got all of that out of the way. See, you guys, her virginity was stolen. She didn't make bad decisions, the booze made those decisions for her.

Oh wait. No one forced her to drink? Oh. She was drunk on wine coolers, you say? So she decided on her own to have those drinks and put herself into a situation with a school crush that could ultimately lead to something a little less "making smores" and a little more "making babies"? Oh you mean she didn't get pregnant that night on the camping trip and kept sleeping with him after that and then got pregnant?

oh. well. yeah. fuck that bitch.
