Huntsman brings deep pockets to 2012 race

(CNN) - When Jon Huntsman officially wades into the presidential waters Tuesday, he will bring with him at least one asset envied by any candidate for office: deep pockets.

The former Utah governor, who until April had served as President Obama's ambassador to China, owns assets valued between $17.8 million and $84.0 million, according to a personal financial disclosure report filed in May. The report covers Huntsman's personal finances for the 2009 calendar year, when he assumed the China post.

The bulk of Huntsman's wealth that year came from investments valued between $7 million and $35 million, as well as from a family holding company. That company, valued between $5 million and $25 million, was solely invested in the Huntsman Corporation, a multi-billion dollar chemical company founded by Jon Huntsman, Sr., the former governor's father.

Federal law requires Huntsman to file an updated financial disclosure report within 30 days of officially becoming a presidential candidate.

GOP presidential hopefuls Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Tim Pawlenty, and Mitt Romney have yet to file their reports, but they have all requested 45-day extensions.

Romney last filed a financial disclosure report in 2007, during his previous bid for the Republican presidential nomination. That year, his wealth was estimated between $190 million and $250 million.

Obama went to alot of countries and secured alot of ivestment for big companies to put america to work. Instead These colorations made trillions, got greedy, put trillions of dollars in other countries to avoid paying se of the cheapest taxes in American history, then employ the repugs to lie and defend their tactics at the se time screaming debt reduction. This candidate would be loved by corporations, who is following in the bush policies that crashed our nation.

All the better for playing pocket pool while the rich and corporations pay him and his GOPer cronies to hand them more wealth and power at the expense of the rest of us.

Huntsman, one of the more talk-sense Republicans, is too sane to run this kind of campaigns, which are now more leaned to dogmas, empty rhetoric, and high-sounding-nothing campaign promises. Ron Paul and Huntsman are 2 endangered species of the GOP, which more favors more aggressive but shadow candidates like Palin or Bachmann.

Huntsman is a wealthy candidate with a lot personal business interests overseas in a part of the world that is not covered much in the US. Seeing how Republicans love to export jobs overseas, I would be surprised if Huntsman did not get some anonymous and significant donations from East Asia. Donations from foreign owned businesses and governments alike. Citizens United has made it all of it perfectly legal. Nothing needs to be disclosed to the public. Unlimited donations. Sounds like bribery to me.

I thought "moderate" Republicans were on the extinction list. He will be gone by the South Carolina primary. Is it just me or does this guy have a "how you doing" vibe?

We do not recommend Jon Huntsman. This is based upon our experience with his company Huntsman Petrochemical Co which was court ordered to withhold wages against one of their employees for past child support owed, actually he had worked for Huntsman for a long time, not paying support. The company refused to withhold and in fact entering into an agreement with deadbeat dad not to. I –the single mom involved with this litigation sued the company under Federal rule (UIFSA)that says the company can be held liable -here in Colorado. This action was thwarted by Huntsman Co lies to court that they "did no business" here, wholly false. We found plenty of business contacts. These actions thwarted our family out of thousands owed, while deadbeat retreated into retirement-even though retirement is also subject to withholding. The issue was not resolved. This all happened while Jon Huntsman was CEO , the attitude of the company was a total diregard for the law, and the mindset of what would a single mom do to confront this issue... I stepped up, followed the law and persued rights but thwarted by Company, a deadbeat company.
America needs to remain in Hope with leadership who stands up for us strongly, Say NO to Big Business graft and corruption.
    Say No to Huntsman!

The longer the GOP field is unsettled, the better for Obama. It will be a year before they know who their candidate will be and the entire time the Dems. can raise money and campaign. I hope another 10 people jump in the race.

Because a guy worth $84 Million REALLY understands how the average American is dealing with the recession... Right. And i've got a bridge to sell.

And as for governing experience, The government in Utah is totally in the pocket of bigi business. That's how he got into office in the first place. The state with the loosest environmental regulations, and the biggest tax breaks for the rich... No wonder a rich, white oil-company executive got voted in as Governor. Unfortunately for him, unless the rest of the nation gets a bad case of 'Utah fever' and gets treated with frontal lobotomies, there is no WAY he'll ever be President. This might fly in Salt Lake, but not in the rest of the nation.

Huntsman is trying to parlay his FAMILY'S business acumen, and his pleasure trips around the globe with a stint in China into a trip to the White House. Well-heeled, affluent do-nothing types generally end up being ambasadors. When was the last time that you saw an Average Joe in government get assigned a cushy post like this? They form an international fraternity if you will. They all know EACH OTHER and are looking out for opportunites for EACH OTHER; protecting EACH OTHER'S interests and investments while they socialize and further cement the bonds to ONE ANOTHER.
Now you expect them to come home and take care of Joe Nobody....

Suure. Richie Rich Huntsman...He's the guy the dwindling middle class needs to vote for to represent their urgent needs...with the Chinese, because this is the only candidate that speaks..fluent Mandarin. Just don't hold your breath middle class or seniors, his policy platforms are for the ultra wealthy that outsource regularly to China.

How many millions is Obama worth? He's expecting to con people into giving him one billion dollars to get re-elected. He has no personal expenses yet rakes it in. Of course, he'll cash in big after he gets tossed in 2012. I hear he's great at giving speeches. Every thing else, not so much.

Do you understand the difference between PERSONAL net worth and the amount of money collected by the campaign via donations etc? Apparently not. Huntsman, or whichever GOPer ends up the nominee puppeted around by the rich and corporations that are elbow-deep in his colon, will be right on par with the money Obama collects from donations, particularly when you consider the "outside" spending done through 503(c)(4) organizations that allow corporations to keep their campaign spending secret (then jack up the prices of their goods and services and fire employees in order to pay for it).

I don't hold Huntsman's wealth against him, even though "dep pockets" take more to fill and at whose expense will that be?
I don't agree with his subscribing to Ryan's Medicare Plan, but I'm just getting to know the guy.
I'll even go as far as to say that the way he's blowing off these posers wannabes within his own Party I find deliciously refreshing. I also appreciate his "if they don't like me they have others to choose from' line, as if that lunatic lineup would pose a serious choice to anyone.
However, President Obama is a self-made man. He travelled the globe as our President repairing PR damage done by the previous administration; building bridges and forging business aliiances. The fact that we want instantaneous results in the shape of our jobs flying home from overseas does not negate that fact. He has shored up our economy and was incredibly compassionate and forward thinking in keeping his campaign promise to us of healthcare reform.
No he is not a business owner. But as has been proven , a business owner, ex-governor, well-travelled member of the affluent American '{R}istocracy damn near killed us all if not financially then quite literally with his personal Iraqui war.
Hope deserves more than 2 1/2 years to fully manifest itself int he form of Change especially when facing such Un-American obstruction.

is he from New York? NJ? Florida? or Utah? Washington D.C. (that's where his apartment is)?, or China where President Obama graciously appointed him? is he trying to confuse voters with all of these different locations?

he's not a slime ball, which at least puts him to the top of the GOP field, but he would have a tough time going head to head with Obama!

Boy those financial disclosure rules must be pretty stringent! After opening the books they figure that he's worth between 17 and 84!! million? That's a 67 million dollar discrepancy! Just what is it that these guys "disclose"?
