Huntsman's future may hinge on his past

New York (CNN) - Jon Huntsman was out to show off his conservative side. Stepping into the 2012 race surrounded by his family, Huntsman announced his presidential campaign in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, the same spot where Republican icon Ronald Reagan launched his successful 1980 general election run for the White House.

Normally soft-spoken, the former Utah governor issued a stark warning about the future. "We are about to pass down to the next generation a country that is less powerful, less compassionate, less competitive and less confident than the one we got. This is totally unacceptable and totally un-American," Huntsman said.

Understanding Jon Huntsman's distinct brand of Mormonism

(CNN) - How key is Jon Huntsman's Mormonism to understanding him and his rise as a politician?

His grandfather was an apostle in the Mormon church, his father is a lay leader in the church, and Huntsman himself was a Mormon missionary to Taiwan, which gave him the language skills that helped land his last job, as President Barack Obama's ambassador to China.

Listen: Is Huntsman Too Mild-mannered for the GOP faithful? The News Networks? CNN's Wolf Blitzer and Bob Costantini discuss:

Gay marriage battle rages as N.Y. senators debate taxes and rent

New York (CNN) - A day after state lawmakers were due to head home, a pair of controversial issues seem to stubbornly postpone their summer recess.

The first is something that many call a quintessential New York battle: Whether to enact the first statewide cap on property taxes. The cap is linked to the extension of rent control laws that apply to roughly 1 million apartments, most of them in New York City.

Carney: Obama has made final decision on rate of Afghanistan troop withdrawals

(CNN) - President Barack Obama has made a final decision on the rate of initial U.S. troop withdrawals from Afghanistan, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed Tuesday.

The president will keep his commitment to start a withdrawal in July, Carney said.

Carney claimed the United States has had "significant" success in meeting its military goals in Afghanistan.

"The process (under which the president's decision was made) was all about the mission that was laid out" by Obama in 2009, Carney said.

BLITZER’S BLOG: Huntsman calls for civility in presidential race

(CNN) - Here’s what I especially liked about Jon Huntsman’s presidential announcement in front of the Statue of Liberty. He called for some civility in the race for the White House.

Unlike several of the other Republican candidates, he did not open with a blistering assault on President Obama

Kerry, McCain push measure backing Libya campaign

Washington (CNN) – Two influential U.S. senators introduced a resolution Tuesday expressing support for limited American involvement in the NATO-led military campaign in Libya - part of an effort to counter rising pressure in the House of Representatives to withdraw backing for the mission.

The resolution, introduced by Massachusetts Democrat John Kerry and Arizona Republican John McCain, authorizes the commitment of U.S. forces for one year while stressing the lack of support for any use of American ground troops.
