WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) - With the price of gold at record highs, presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul wants to make sure the U.S. gold bars at Fort Knox are really there.
Paul, a Texas Republican who wants to convert the U.S. monetary system to one based on the gold standard, called a hearing on Thursday to grill federal officials from Treasury and the General Accounting Office about whether all the U.S.-owned gold is safe.

Once Obama and the Democrats destroy the value of our dollar with their insane spendingand printing of money, this gold will be important. If all we have to back up our currency is the governments ability to steal from our paychecks on a weekly basis, then we are in deep doo-doo.

I don't know about that gold, but I know some U.S. revenue potential mysteriously dissappeared into the pockets of the wealthy as tax breaks and a good number of us think that tax break was a good idea. Paul doesn't want to convert us back to a gold standard. He wants to legalize competition in currencies by allowing gold and silver (which actually have value and can't be completely inflated away by Bernanke) to be legal tender and compete with the fiat dollar on the market. He just believes that gold will come out on top, which it likely would in such a situation, but competition will determine the victor.
If the gold is all there, there is nothing to hide. Congressmen should be able to see it–especially during an economic crisis. Let's not forget that it's the American citizens' gold–FDR stole it all during the Great Depression.
