Boehner: Obama is 'sorely mistaken'

Washington (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner responded to President Obama's press conference Wednesday saying Republicans in the House will continue to "stand with the American people" while the president ignores the economic realities in the U.S.

His full statement:

"The President's remarks today ignore legislative and economic reality, and demonstrate remarkable irony. His administration has been burying our kids and grandkids in new debt and offered no plan to rein in spending. Republicans have been leading and offering solutions to put the brakes on this spending binge. The President has been AWOL from that debate.

"The President is sorely mistaken if he believes a bill to raise the debt ceiling and raise taxes would pass the House. The votes simply aren't there – and they aren't going to be there, because the American people know tax hikes destroy jobs. They also know Washington has been on a spending binge for many years, and they will only tolerate a debt limit increase if we stop it.

"The new majority in the House is going to stand with the American people. A debt limit increase can only pass the House if it includes spending cuts larger than the debt limit increase; includes reforms to hold down spending in the future; and is free from tax hikes. The longer the President denies these realities, the more difficult he makes this process. If the president embraces a measure that meets these tests, he has my word that the House will act on it. Anything less cannot pass the House."

- CNN Congressional Producer Deirdre Walsh contributed to this report.

The definition of insanity..."doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result". Tax cuts are the lowest in the last 50 years, so where are the jobs that these low tax rates are supposed to create? Tax reductions to the current rate have produced close to 2 Trillion in additional debt since 2003. What empire in their right mind would cut taxes when you are engaged in more than two wars at the same time?

Who are the "American people" you keep referring to John? Billionaires? Multi-National Oil Companies? Are you afraid of losing the tax deduction for your corporate jet?

Why does Boehner keep saying he "stands with the American people." I am an American and i don't stand with him. Clearly most Americans want to tax the rich. Is he really going to let America fail to protect the rich?

As he also ignores the realities that the richest 1% are not pulling their weight and need to chip in and help the country instead of ravaging it with excessive profits and bonuses fueled by their addiction to define themselves through material wealth. This they do as they are devoid of anything within themselves to be defined by. Total lack of morals and ethics.

    Mr. President,

Here is the Executive Order you requested.

    – – – – – – – –

Effective Immediately, no member of Congress shall be paid. The United States has reached it's capacity to incur additional expenses and must take immediate steps to lower, postpone or eliminate all outlays.

Since ammendment 14 to the Constitution says that the "debt of the United States may not become invalid", and the members of Congress are not taking steps to uphold that principle, they are not entitled to pay checks.

Where are the bills to create Jobs? That is what you the repubs were elected in 2010 to do? Start first to do what you promised us. OBAMA has done what he promised. Got rid of OSAMA and is bringing the boys back to USA.
When will you stop bitching about others while doing nothing yourself?

"They also know Washington has been on a spending binge for many years" well let's define what that spending binge is, to me it would be the continued squandering of money on the 2 wars Bush started and the continued waste of money we give to profitable oil companies in the form of tax subsidies. I don't see why we have to compromise public health programs over corporate interests.

  8. Lets get something straight..

The only kids and grandkids that all politicians care about is their own.. and most of them are wealthy enough to where those offspring and offspring of offspring are set for life if they don't screw it up..

So when they try to win an argument with the "our kids and grandkids.." I know they have no valid points to make.. They dont care about our kids and grandkids... and if they said "my kids and grandkids..." then they would be lying..

Mr Boenhead,YOU are mistaken if you think for one moment we believe the words falling out the side of yo and McConnells necks. You stand by themoney that pays you on the side. Maybe the side "job" will have your back when you no longer have a job.

Governments spend money, why should poor people and middle class have to do go without state sponsored help and aids, when the richest of the rich don't do without, even in the recovery of our economy. Boehner said they are putting debt on my generation (im 27) and my children generation

whileObama is proposing raising taxes (increase revenue) to pay down the debt, and Republicans are saying that the middle class and poor are going to have to tighten their belts, while the rich just need...,... well nothing. I agree with the President, Pay a little more now or pay a lot more later.

If nobody is working than high taxes won't matter. Taxes won't make employers not higher people. Not having the right qualifications will

When are the republicans going ot realize that compromise is what makes our political system run. It can't be their way or nothing. Their only motivation is to keep the economy down and pin it all on Obama in 2012. They are pathetic, unpatriotic corportists.

Taxes Kill Jobs ! Except for the 22 million NEW jobs created when Bill Clinton was Prez & the highest income tax rate was 39 %, the SAME level Obama is pushing for. Oh yeah, millions of jobs were LOST when Bush lowered the rate to 32%. Yep, those taxes on the rich are JOB KILLERS.

It is time for Boner to stand with the American people. His job killing efforts and attacks on : seniors, women, muslims, union workers, policemen, firemen, teachers, veterans, medicare recipients, the middle class, poor children, those without health care, and government safety regulations has defined the republican party as a group of pimps for the wealthy.

    Fire Boner in 2012!

He is lying as usual, we have to raise the debt ceiling, cut spending drastically and yes the majority of citizens want taxes raised. We need to go back to the old days of taxing esp if we want to give our money away and fight wars that never end.

  19. The Greedy Old Pigs have declared class war on America

House Speaker John Boehner responded to President Obama's press conference Wednesday saying Republicans in the House will continue to "stand with the filthy rich billionaires who own us". FIFY, Orangeman!

I can't believe Boehner could possibly say he or the GOBPbaggers stand with average Americans. A HUGE majority of Americans want to end the Bush tax cuts for the filthy rich. Yet Boehner and his fellow Koch-wh0res refuse to stand by average Americans on this. What a blithering hypocrite.

John Boehner you are full of crap. You are not standing with the American people, you are standing with the RICH American people and make no mistake about it, you have one interest and one interest only YOURSELF and your high society buddies. I can't stand this creep, he is the worst speaker of the house ever and I don't know how President Obama could bring himself to play golf with this pitiful excuse of a man when he clearly have no intention of ever working with him no matter what! Bipartisanship is overrated when it comes to the republicans because the definition of working together is "my way or the highway". It's going to take an act of God to put people like Boehner in their place and it can be done!

Republicans in the House will continue to "stand with the American people" : Which Americans are you standing with Mr. Boehner, the wealthy, and the money grubbing corporations? Where are the jobs your party promised in 2010 i the sheep voted your way, Mr. so be it. The companies you protect would rather hoard their cash, overwork the emplyees they have left, run to tax havens to avoid paying their share, and in the end send jobs overseas rather thanemploy Americans at a decent wage. For 8 years Republicans were the party of spend, spend, spend, deficits didn't matter. Some of us are paying attention Mr.Boehner, we see right through your tactics of playing chicken with peoples lives. Even if spending is cut to bare bones, the government will l revenue is needed to pay back what was borrowed. Republicans won't be happy until we have riots in the streets like Greece. Then they can scare the te party nit wits into voting their way again.
