(CNN) - The Senate will forgo its scheduled recess for the week of July 4 to work on cutting the deficit, Sen. Harry Reid said Thursday.
Both parties are trying to strike a deal on raising the federal government's current $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by the start of August.

Let us see what they can get done. If the Republicans still claim that taxes can't be raised, then have them find some reason why and explanation as to how raising taxes are job killers?
We didn’t hear from house majority so they don’t want to work
Here's the problem the President was addressing when he remarked about Congress being on vacation. The majority party sets the vacation schedules.
Last year Democrats held majorities in both chambers. By the time of the 2010 elections, tentaive vacation schedules had already been set pending the outcome of the elections.
The Republicans set their own vacation schedule for the House after the took control. They set a schedule that does not synch with the one already established by Senate Demorats.
For example, the House is celebrating a week long vacation this week for July 4th, while the Senate is schedule for next week. The net result is that what would normally be a one week recess is effectively turned into two, and two week breaks are turned into three. Congress cannot function effectively if one chamber is in recess because compromises must be reached on bills passed by each. The vacation schedule is another method used to stall and delay the work of Congress.
