(CNN) - It’s not exactly crossing enemy lines but showing up at your dad’s opponent's campaign rally probably will make for a few awkward moments around the family dining table.
Will Huntsman, the college-age son of Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, attended a Mitt Romney rally last Friday in Salt Lake City.
The Salt Lake Tribune published photos of a smiling Will Huntsman reaching over some railing to pose with Romney while giving a "hang lose" hand gesture to the camera.
The Huntsman campaign told the Tribune that Will, one of seven Huntsman children, was simply trying to be funny by taking the photo, and people should assume nothing more about his appearance.
"Will wanted to see another campaign event," Huntsman spokesman Tim Miller told the Tribune. "He was having fun, and it was not his intention to be disrespectful in any way."
The two candidates are viewed as political rivals given their shared ties to Utah and the Mormon community. Huntsman was governor of the state and left office in 2009 with high approval ratings. Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, won the state in the 2008 Republican presidential primary with 90 percent of the vote.
