Borger: Republicans' no-tax purity problem

Editor's note: Gloria Borger is a senior political analyst for CNN, appearing regularly on CNN's "The Situation Room," "AC360°," "John King, USA" and "State of the Union."

Washington (CNN) - So all the congressional leaders and the president are locked in a room. They all have one goal: raising the debt ceiling. They all agree it's important. They also agree that it's urgent, because by August 2, the United States will have run out of money to pay its bills.

What has become of the republican party? Their great leader Ronald Reagan raised taxes quite a few times. If he were alive today he'd be ran out of the party.

Look dumb rear Liberals it is not the Republicans. It is the liberals who want one group to be taxed to have to pay for everything. Tell me that this is the fair thing to do. Of course what runs the Liberals would think this way for most of them have never paid taxes to start with. I would say it would be fair to raise the taxes on the rich if the middle class got hit just half as hard. No body said you had a free boat to living easy. You have to work for it.

Here is my recommendation – don't pay the Senators, Representatives, their staffs, or their district office bills. Bet they vote to raise the ceiling, and eliminate loopholes real fast after that.

"It is the liberals who want one group to be taxed to have to pay for everything. "

Seeing as they own almost everything and make the vast VAST majority of the total national income, it's only fair. mull over jsut this one fact while you're trying to keep up: 400 families in the US have a combined net worth greater than 150,000,000 Americans combined. Yes, that's half the country. Remind me why I don't weep for the 2%.

@Sank - OK Brainiak - I made a good living, paid max into social security for most of 47 years, now the republicans want to say I can't even get back what I paid in? Give me a break!!

I'm not the only one. I doubt you've reached "the max Soc Sec level" in your lifetime. Go pick up your welfare check, buy your drugs, head back to mommy's basement and refrain from making such assinine statements.

Sank calls for a progressive tax and he is correct in doing so. The rich reap much more benefits from the government (the military protects their assets (the poor have no assets to protect), they use energy and infrastructure like airports and roads much more than the poor; etc)so they should paybhigher rates. the problem is, right now tax rates are near their all tmie lows at a time when the government ois on the brink of default. Obama finally caved to pressure and has agreed to big spending cuts. The republicans need to step back from going too far and follow the lead of Reagan and Bush Sr. who raised taxes for the benefit of the nation.

@Sank – it would be real nice if your opinions were supported by the facts. Both Warren Buffet and Alan Simpson have stated that they checked and found that their office workers pay a higher effective tax rate they do. That is representative of a "regressive" tax system. Over the past 30 years, all the income increases adjusted for inflation have gone to the top 1% or 2%. ALL OF IT. Tax rates for the wealthy are the lowest they have been in 70 years, yet their share of total wages and total wealth has skyrocketed.

The middle class is working harder for less, while the wealthy have seen all of the increases in income and most of the reductions in tax rates. Your whole premise is totally incorrect. It is built on right wing mythology, not fact. Please come back and comment again after you have educated yourself.

Facts are sticky and sometimes inconvenient things, eh?

  12. The Real Tom Paine

Bill Clinton was right: the issue of taxes has become theology amongst the GOP, and, no matter how much evidence you give them, they will not budge. The POTUS offers 4 trillion in debt reduction, but because there is 1 dollar of tax increases ( in the form of loophole eliminations) for ever 3 $ in custs, the GOP says no. Boehner looks like an incompetant, and McConnell is overplaying his hand as well. Hope the cons feel good when the crap hits the fan if no deal is reached: they've remained pure!

And the rest of the world will be in chaos.

I've been duly paying my fair share into social security for 30 years. In fact, all of us in the middle class paid in a $3.2 trillion dollar surplus. And where did that money go while Republicans oversaw the "surplus". Poof gone – tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations to create jobs. I guess they mean't in China. And now, when the time to put it back comes up, NO not the corporations and wealthy who took teh surplus will repay, WE IN THE MIDDLE CLASS are supposed to repay ourselves. What shills for corporations and monied interests. Remember in November folks. 2012, the elderly VOTE!!!!

Obama, return the favor. Offer a short term funding deal absent of corporate lobbyist subsidies, hedge fund manager tax loopholes, and grants to Republican contributors. THAT'S what they are doing, return the favor. Give them the antithesis of the corporate manifesto they are handing out to a populist, people first short term increase solution. GO FOR IT – make it fun.

Pres. Obama has everything to gain by aligning hiself with his base and not letting social security, medicare, and other services be sacrificed the GOTP idols. This fight is just as much about not having the President capitulate to these dorks as it is about the debt ceiling itself. We've gone through almost 3 years of compromising with these mental midgets, and trying to take the high road and we've been left feeling icky and violated.
So the way I see it I will continue to stand with our President as I am not privy to all the particulars of this situation that he is. I will trust his decision BUT...what I wouldn't give to have him pull on that rope that he's been feeding the Rethugs and have them swinging from the Congressional rafters until they turned a nice shade of crimson red......sigh!

Let's understand the term of a tax: Medicare, Medicaid, FICA, FUTA, SUTA, Income, Sales, and yet there are people who only like to claim one tax is being paid. As if someone, perhaps a Rush or Glenn as their name, has brainwashed them into believing only one tax exists. I wonder why? Feeds their theology perhaps, makes them believe a lie that in no other words could be won? And, since social security generates the most income, paid almost exlusively by the middle class, I wonder how that would soak into an already overtaxed belief system for this Rush/Glenn crowd? Interesting to see how easily the mind is put in the rinse cycle.

From Sen. Obama’s Floor Speech, March 20, 2006:

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now d...epend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

Obama in his own words still holds true today.

There is no problem, No tax increases. Spending cuts. This inept, incompetant president and his drug addled supporters have already gotten it down to less than 50% actually pay taxes in their efforts to totally destroy the country and personal responsibility. Now he wants to make those of us who can pass drug tests and actually work for a living pay more so his voters can watch Oprah reruns. Also I guess the corrupt union bosses that got the first batch of stimulus money to spend on their Las Vegas and Florida vacations must need more money to donate to the corrupt democrat liberals.

The funny thing is your repeating verbatim things that highly paid entertainers spout off, and the sad part about it is that it's not factual, and your not getting paid to say it.

The people who "don't pay any taxes" don't make enough money to pay anything based on their standard deduction, they work, pay SSI, FICA, etc. state tax, sales tax and buy gas, they based on their dependents, paid taxes throughout the year, and the government used that money and the interest it earned, now your anger could be warranted if you made over 300k as an individual, but based on your continuous rants that are general, crude, and non-factual, your just an unpaid shilling that probably has a stash of emergency food, a book shelf full of books, a stash of gold that you can't eat nor get change back, and lets not forget the computer software that you've bought.

I probably will assume that you've donated money to SarahPac and voted for Bush twice, those 2 items definitely confirm that you do not know what your talking about, do not know the real implications of taxing the top 2% and don't know that Reagan raised taxes 11 times, gave amnesty to illegals, and that HW started cap and trade, and that the Heritage Foundation created the infamous "mandate"............Will Sarah give you your donations back?

And he was 100% right BACK THEN. He saw it coming didn't he? We were not in a recession then, we were put in a near depression due to the poor leadership, poor choices, and lack of regulation by Bush & The Gang. His entire presidency has been one of dealing with the mistakes of two previous administrations, and the off-the-books war of it's "leadership". Talk about spending like a drunken sailor and you have to talk about The Shrub, he spent us into the proverbial poor house and then poof! Left the building.
I'm NOT doing the "we still have to honor our debts, and we had to spend to jump start the economy" thingy with you, but I will reiterate that The Shrub spent and neglected our economy until we went into a freefall down the abyss, and it took cash to get us out.
    Obama 2012.
