Romney: Obama has power to end debt crisis

(CNN) - Speaking to the Portsmouth Rotary Club Thursday, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney called on the president to end the debt crisis.

"Come on, Mr. President," said the Republican presidential candidate. "You can, by yourself, cut spending, agree to cap the spending and put in place a balanced budget amendment."

Democrats and Republicans are divided on a deficit-reduction deal that needs to be reached by Aug. 2, the deadline set to avoid a default on the government's loans.

Romney's campaign has previously expressed support for the "Cut, Cap and Balance Pledge," which has been signed by seven other 2012 presidential candidates, five governors and 48 members of Congress.

The pledge asks signees to oppose a raise in the debt ceiling unless it includes major spending cuts, a cap in spending, and a balanced budget amendment.

"That is the answer for the debt ceiling," Romney told the New Hampshire audience. "It is within my view the president's power."

While not talking directly about the political fights surrounding the debt talks between Congress and the White House, Romney said politicians too often think more about the next election than policy.

"We have to elect people who don't give a hoot about getting re-elected but instead care about getting the country right," Romney said.

Yeah Mr. President! You can do it. All you have to do is give in to every one of the Republican demands...oh, and remember not to mention that not only did the Democrats balance the budget under Clinton but that they tried to pass a balanced budget amendment and it was defeated by...oh who was that...that's right...the Republicans! Don't mention that, or the line will be moved out just a bit further to stop you from "fear mongering".

Gee Slick Mitt...where were all you back when Bush and the Republican controlled Congress raised the Debt Ceiling SEVEN times, doubled defense spending, and gave away half a trillion in Corporate Welfare with no way to pay for it?

I guess the Republicans suffer from selective amnesia or some how think the Dem's forced the Republicans to spend our tax $ into oblivion with never actually paying for it...all they do is simply add to the debt and cut tax revenue. You don't need to be a math whiz to know you can't spend 2x on budgets while at the same time cutting your revenue almost in half. Any business that would do that would go bankrupt. Yet the Republicans seem to think it was okay when they did those things back when Bush was President and had control of Congress up til 2006.

Ironic coming from Romney, who has no power in winning a national election.

Hey Romney – Why did the US Dept of Labor rank you at the bottom of the barrel in job creation during your single term as governor of Massachusetts?

This man Romney is smoke and mirrors. I do not see what solution he is giving on this problem. If one has nothing to offer, better keep your mouth shut like other candidates have done.! This is the reason why Romney is not going to make it! Its absurd!

Does this idiot have any idea about the amendment process? How many states must approve one before it is effective. And I don't think the executive branch initiates the process. The stupidity on the right is scary as he double hockey sticks.

When are these repulicons going to understand that under the constitution it is the congress that is authorized to spend money, not the executive. Congress can either accept the executive branches budget or reject it.
The republicons don't want to take responsibility given to them under the constitution. It's as simple as that!

Mitt Romney has the business skills to know that there is no way out of the debt but to raise taxes on the wealthy before we have to do it to the less wealthy. Romney is not stupid like some Republicans, he is just a liar.

Yeah, right Mr. Romney. On the backs of middle class americans (lower middle class in your eyes). You will never suffer the likes of what the average joe is going through right now. Get rid of Bush era tax cuts AND cut spending. It takes both to make a commitment. It takes that commitment for us to trust leadership can move forward.

Mitt: 2 things. First the debt ceiling is about debts already on the books, you DO know that, right? It's about our current obligations fueled in part by 2 wars that were finally put on the books, an unpaid for perscription plan (the responsible adult thing to do unlike Ws funny accounting). Secondly, the responsible thing to do is tackle the budget and deficit reduction plan in a way that is not out to ruin people like you did with Bain Capital. Good luck running from that nightmare Mittens the Job Destroyer (still looking for one of those mysterious Job Creators)
