Romney: Obama has power to end debt crisis

(CNN) - Speaking to the Portsmouth Rotary Club Thursday, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney called on the president to end the debt crisis.

"Come on, Mr. President," said the Republican presidential candidate. "You can, by yourself, cut spending, agree to cap the spending and put in place a balanced budget amendment."

Democrats and Republicans are divided on a deficit-reduction deal that needs to be reached by Aug. 2, the deadline set to avoid a default on the government's loans.

Romney's campaign has previously expressed support for the "Cut, Cap and Balance Pledge," which has been signed by seven other 2012 presidential candidates, five governors and 48 members of Congress.

The pledge asks signees to oppose a raise in the debt ceiling unless it includes major spending cuts, a cap in spending, and a balanced budget amendment.

"That is the answer for the debt ceiling," Romney told the New Hampshire audience. "It is within my view the president's power."

While not talking directly about the political fights surrounding the debt talks between Congress and the White House, Romney said politicians too often think more about the next election than policy.

"We have to elect people who don't give a hoot about getting re-elected but instead care about getting the country right," Romney said.

All these pledges are illegal if they are elected officials. Nothing comes above their duty and responsibility to their state and the US as a whole. By using these documents to hold up legislation, they are violating the oath they took when elected.
As for Romney's thinking that the President can solely act on correcting this problem, he needs to read just what power a President has before running for the office. As a matter a fact- this particular office should require a basic competency test!

Where are the specifics Mitt? How would you do things different? What would be your plan?

All you hear is generic rhetoric from the Republican candidates.

Romney is showing himself to be as much an "air head" as Palin or Bachmann.

Really, Mr. Romney? The President can do all of that without Congress? And if he did, how quickly would you scream that you was unconstitutionally? I have a better idea – how about we stand firm and finally end corporate welfare rather than putting the entire burden on middle class and poor Americans.

  10. Mitt Romney, He'll Say Anything to Get Elected

This is the kind of disingenuous speak I'd expect from someone that has not been in a leadership role where they couldn't simply order people around.

If Romney doesn't know better that what he is saying, he doesn't belong in the Whitehouse. If he does know better, he's an opportunistic liar. Which is it Mr. Romney?

What the President CAN do is take the gloves off and invoke the 14th Ammendment giving him extraordinary discretion under strange and unusual circumstances. Then you can bet Romney claim he is being a "dictator" because he won't like the WAY the President solves the problem.

Sell the country on your latitude around the 14th sir, then TAKE THE GLOVES OFF. We've got your back Mr. President.

And the GOP/TEA Birthers can agree to pay down the debt through tax revenus after they overspent the country into oblivion during the Bush years. STOP KICKING THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD and pay for what you ALREADY SPENT!

So Weathervane WIllard thinks the President has the power to upsurp Congress and singlehandedly decide what the spending and cuts should be and that he also can take the role of Congress and the states ratifying an amendment to the Constitution? Why is this turkey running for President, it looks like he has no clue on separation of powers or even a basic grasp of the Constitution.

"We have to elect people who don't give a hoot about getting re-elected but instead care about getting the country right,"

Best thing I've heard all day... ironically said while campaigning. Unfortunately Romney's plan only covers half the problem. No matter your party affiliations the only way to get out of debt is to cut spending AND bring in money. Spending cuts alone won't solve the problem... we'll be doing this again just a few years from now. We have to increase revenue as well which, as much as EVERYONE hates it, involves raising taxes.

"We have to elect people who don't give a hoot about getting re-elected but instead care about getting the country right," Romney said.

I could not agree more. That's why you won't get elected, Mr. Romney. By the way, which of your children's basements are you currently claiming as your residence so you can vote? A political contortionist, who's state ranked 46th in job creation, is attempting to lecture the President on making principled decisions that will affect the wrold economy? Next thing you know, Palin and Bachmann will be discussing black holes with Stephen Hawking, and telling him his math is wrong.

Here is another arm chair quarterback. He does not admit that people in his own party are the ones holding up the progress.

    The GOP should be fired.

So says Weathervane Willard who has spent the past 6 years running for President.

Compromise is what we're looking for here, Mitt.

    Cut/Cap/Balance is just the GOP's so-called answer...it's not a compromise.

This is not a news story, by the way. It's like running a story to say Michele Bachmann would like Row v Wade overturned.

"We have to elect people who don't give a hoot about getting re-elected but instead care about getting the country right," Romney said.

Well Mr. Romney I suppose you should also criticize your party leaders as well especially Mr. Cantor. If Boehner and Obama were negotiating themselves we might already have a deal. Romney is basically saying that the President should just yield to the republicans wishes. I want compromise too but not on the backs of the most vulnerable populations of our country.

"balance budget," used to great effect in the Clinton era requires the flexibility to balance new spending with either cuts or tax increases.
Since the GOP will not agree to tax increases to anyone, even if that person made $5Billion last year, it becomes unfeasible.
Until the GOP realize that "negotiation" means both sides need to give, this will not happen.
I feel sorry for the President, having to deal with these children yelling one liners.

GOP MOVIES in the works ….. News Report July 14, 2012
If they made movies with roles played by republican candidates:

Sarah Palin ..... Has anyone ever noticed that from the moment John 'Maverick my Ass' McCain introduced Palinitis (she is a minor infection) to the world,
she has not once, never even come close to having an original idea. After 2+ years of listening to her defend yourself, she appears less likely to be a political candidate & much more likely to be the defendant in a murder by stupid case.

The following puts into perspective the BATTLE BETWEEN PALIN & OTHER GOP NAZI PARTY CANDIDATES:
Should a movie be made, the TITLE would be ..........

"Romneystein versus the Wolfbitch" – see whose hair gets in a tangle first!

"Bachzilla meets the Bride of Grizzly Adam's Grizzly" – the story behind the' scratch & sniff' idea

"The Donfather-Part 4" – The history of a pepperoni buyout by a political wannabore!

"Newt Odyssey 2012 vs Sarah Wars-Episode 10" – The Cloning of Killer Clowns!

"Sara & The Huntsman" – sequel to "The Death of Bambi by semi-automatic"

Paul Ron in "The Political Hustler" – co-starring Sarah Palin as the CUE card reader.

"Tales of the Inner Santorum Sanitorium" – Palin plays herself, 'The Hockey Nurse from Hell'

"An UnMoveable Feast" (cooking show) – 'Palin's Pizza; thick crust, wackomole, extra cheesy, low IQ bacon & some mush puppies'

"Paws of Plenty-DonkeyGate" – Tim & Sarah go undercover at a Democrat Donkey Farm, hoping to undermine Obama's re-election. They are caught because they did not realize that donkeys have hooves. Fortunately for Palin, her head was so far up Pawlenty's ass, she wasn't recognized & was able to escape over the fence.
The chase is on ..... you must go see the film to find out what happened.

Translation: Cut, cap and Balance everything except my pet projects and cronnies salaries. The Republican are trying to hide their selfishness, but it's getting harder to disguise their lopsided policies, all tilting dangerously to the right.
