(CNN) - Speaking to the Portsmouth Rotary Club Thursday, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney called on the president to end the debt crisis.
"Come on, Mr. President," said the Republican presidential candidate. "You can, by yourself, cut spending, agree to cap the spending and put in place a balanced budget amendment."
Romney's campaign has previously expressed support for the "Cut, Cap and Balance Pledge," which has been signed by seven other 2012 presidential candidates, five governors and 48 members of Congress.
The pledge asks signees to oppose a raise in the debt ceiling unless it includes major spending cuts, a cap in spending, and a balanced budget amendment.
"That is the answer for the debt ceiling," Romney told the New Hampshire audience. "It is within my view the president's power."
While not talking directly about the political fights surrounding the debt talks between Congress and the White House, Romney said politicians too often think more about the next election than policy.
"We have to elect people who don't give a hoot about getting re-elected but instead care about getting the country right," Romney said.

All these pledges are illegal if they are elected officials. Nothing comes above their duty and responsibility to their state and the US as a whole. By using these documents to hold up legislation, they are violating the oath they took when elected.
As for Romney's thinking that the President can solely act on correcting this problem, he needs to read just what power a President has before running for the office. As a matter a fact- this particular office should require a basic competency test!

What the President CAN do is take the gloves off and invoke the 14th Ammendment giving him extraordinary discretion under strange and unusual circumstances. Then you can bet Romney claim he is being a "dictator" because he won't like the WAY the President solves the problem.

Best thing I've heard all day... ironically said while campaigning. Unfortunately Romney's plan only covers half the problem. No matter your party affiliations the only way to get out of debt is to cut spending AND bring in money. Spending cuts alone won't solve the problem... we'll be doing this again just a few years from now. We have to increase revenue as well which, as much as EVERYONE hates it, involves raising taxes.

Well Mr. Romney I suppose you should also criticize your party leaders as well especially Mr. Cantor. If Boehner and Obama were negotiating themselves we might already have a deal. Romney is basically saying that the President should just yield to the republicans wishes. I want compromise too but not on the backs of the most vulnerable populations of our country.

"balance budget," used to great effect in the Clinton era requires the flexibility to balance new spending with either cuts or tax increases.
Since the GOP will not agree to tax increases to anyone, even if that person made $5Billion last year, it becomes unfeasible.
Until the GOP realize that "negotiation" means both sides need to give, this will not happen.
I feel sorry for the President, having to deal with these children yelling one liners.
