Obama to offer debt ceiling update as deadline nears

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama is scheduled to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. ET Friday to provide an update on the status of marathon negotiations to raise the federal debt ceiling - a subject which has brought partisan tempers to a boil over the past week.

Obama told congressional leaders Thursday he expected them to consult with their respective caucuses and find agreement over the next 24 to 36 hours on how to proceed.

Pawlenty campaign increases 2nd quarter haul

(CNN) – Tim Pawlenty's presidential campaign is upping its ante.

Hours before the deadline for the campaigns to officially file their second quarter fundraising numbers with the Federal Election Commission, a source confirms to CNN that the former Minnesota governor will report bringing in $4.5 million over the past three months. That's about $300,000 more than the campaign reported on July 1, at the end of the second quarter.

Pawlenty: Unfazed by low polls

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty said his campaign needs to "start showing progress" in national and state-wide polls, something he's confident will happen once voters become familiar with his record.

"When my record of results gets out in Minnesota we're going to do better and you'll see that in the poll numbers," the former Minnesota governor said Friday on CNN's "American Morning."

Democrats best Republicans in Congressional baseball

Washington (CNN) - Democrats and Republicans squared off in the 50th annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park in Washington Thursday night.

Unlike the midterm elections, the Republicans never led in this one, falling to the Democrats 8-2 in front of more than 7,000 fans.

There are no formal negotiations planned for Friday to achieve a deficit reduction deal, but President Barack Obama will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. ET to offer an update. …A Republican aide familiar with Thursday's meeting at the White House said Obama told congressional leaders he expected them to consult with their caucuses and find agreement over the next 24 to 36 hours on how to proceed.

CNN: House GOP signals openness to backup debt plan
In a sharp turnaround, House Republican leaders signaled Thursday they are open to a backup debt ceiling plan pushed by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to avoid a default on the nation's credit. "What may look like something less than optimal today, if we're unable to get to an agreement, might look pretty good a couple of weeks from now," House Speaker John Boehner said during a Capitol Hill news conference.
