RNC maps out White House foul

Washington (CNN)-It's never too early to play hardball presidential politics. Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus penned a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder asking for an investigation of an "apparent crime" committed by President Barack Obama Monday.

According to Priebus, the crime was committed by the president, in the Map Room, with a video.

Priebus accused the president of recording a fundraising appeal in the Map Room of the White House. He said it is "not part of the White House residence, but rather 'occupied in the discharge of official duties,'" and called for the Department of Justice to investigate.

The Map Room is located on the ground floor of the White House.

"According to multiple individuals with knowledge of the White House's rooms and layout, the video appears to have been recorded in the Map Room...the White House Counsel has indicated that the video was filmed somewhere in the residential portion of the White House," Priebus said.

It is illegal to solicit contributions for a political purpose from any area of the White House "occupied in the discharge of official duties," or, used for purposes of official White House business.

But the Map Room is considered to be part of the White House residence, and has been for decades. The residence is not subject to restrictions placed on rooms used for official business.

White House spokesman Eric Schultz told CNN, "As we've said in the past, this was wholly appropriate and routinely done in past administrations."

"Many lawyers and experts have all said publicly that what this administration is doing is completely above board," Schultz fired back.

Despite the RNC's claims, both Republican and Democratic administrations have considered the Map Room as part of the White House residence.

"Zaggs – Well considering the fact Obama has conducted official business in the map room (retaking oath of office, greeting Dali Lama), he can't make the argument that its part of the residence."
Except you dont have to actually take the oath of office in the White House, so that doesnt make the map room part of the 'business' section of the White House just because he did. And secondly he met the Dali Lama there specifically because it isnt part of the 'official' White House. It was part of the attempt to lessen the effect of his meeting to the Chinese; they can say they did not meet him 'officially' in the Oval Office.

I read most of the comments here. I too used to be non-partison and an Independent who probably voted more Republican than Democrat. That changed in 2008. My own family alienated me because I couldn't back up and agree w/Bush attacking Iraq. I never knew I was a liberal until they told me I was. I couldn't believe how nasty their little jokes and mail notes were either. I had to put a stop to it.

After Obama was elected one would think things would calm down, now that we had a new president. But the Republicans didn't stop. Finally I registered Democrat and refuse to vote for ANY Republican again, until they stop the dirty politics and bending to the far right fringe.

C'mon guys..we are all losing sight of what's important: WE are all choosing sides..either this party is always right or they are always wrong...and THAT my friends is a sure-fire way to waste time, effort, and money while simultaneously achieving nothing. Many of us immediately think that everything Obama says is wrong, without even listening. And why? Because your "team" told you to think that way! And what about the dems? Many of us think that everything Obama says is right, without even listening, and for the same reason. We've got to get back to the day of the educated voter. Do your homework, know what people stand for, not just what they stand against. We, the people, run this country! The politicians at least know this; that's why they use tactics to "put their words in our mouths"...think for yourself and vote accordingly, and lets get this country back on track!

"rodneyp – It is hilariously amusing reading the liberal responses on this blog. All of you are grasping at ANYTHING to deflect attention away from the incredibly dismal demise of this country brought on by Obama and his czar hacks"

This idiot wants an official investigation into Obama using the map room and you say the libs are grasping at anything? ok then.
And seriously, what is with this czar stuff? You know presidents have been appointing 'czars' for decades right? Obama is doing nothing different.

Typical GOP distraction. Because this is more important than jobs. Speaking of – where are the jobs promised 8 months ago? where oh where are the jobs? I thought it was the no. 1 priority. All the GOTP's are doing nothing but holding America hostage with their pettiness. The majority of Americans who are registered did not vote in 2010, therefore they do not have "the support of the American people."

Looks like the new GOP is all about people who just like to hear themselves talk. Preibus reminds me of the dweebie kid in school who used to get his lunch stolen.

"Waaaaaaaahhhhhhh!" should be the new motto of the Republican party. They are so desperate for a scandal in the most scandal-free presidency in US history, the squeaky clean Obama presidency, that they'll try to latch on to anything...even things that are perfectly legal and appropriate. They are total losers and will have to do MUCH better than that. Obama 2012 all the way. I'll donate today!

How stupid can you get? I'm not a big Obama fan, but I couldn't care less where he recorded a campaign video. The crime is being committed by every member of Congress by not being fiscally responsible and driving the US to the brink of default. THAT'S the crime. You can be sure that if Obama were a Republican and he recorded the same video in the same room, the RNC would be saying it's completely legit. And the Democrats would be crying foul.

What a bunch of empty suits we have allegedly working for us. Self serving, self righteous, self important, and self serving. I challenge you to find anyone in Congress that does not fall under that description.

Ooh, ooh, - don't look over there – at the partisan gridlock we've created, no-no! Look at this grievous crime committed right in our Nation's White House! Boner admitted the GOP's Number Uno goal: the non-reelection of Obama, the business of running the country will just have to wait!

Boring. Lame. Irrelevant. Focus on the issues at hand, GOP, or risk becoming completely alienated by voters who are suffering REAL problems.

I registered as independent a few years ago because I wanted to lose the label and be able to vote for the candidates that I felt would best serve our country. I am very tempted to registering Democrat now because I do not want anyone to think that I might even possibly vote for these idiot Republicans. It is insane what they have been doing and embarrassing how they have gone about it. That's not even the sad thing. The worst part is that they have these party members that will follow them blindly off a cliff.

To all my Americans who actually care about our future please do not let these crazies take us off the cliff with them. I am not saying vote Obama, but I am saying don't vote for an idiot just because they say one thing you like. Make an educated decision based off facts! There is really only one way to vote but if you choose another decision please make the decision based on your own conclusions and not someone's biased opinon based on half truths and lies.

From his photo with the upraised finger can't you just see little Jimm self-riteously standing up in 2nd grade class to tell Teacher that Billy just shat his pants? The RNC's complaint shows about the same level of maturity! Ah, but then that's what we've come to expect, isn't it.

With a name like Reince Priebus maybe he should be investigated for using an obviously false alias. Sounds like a piece of crap Toyota model.

The Republican Tea Party is clearly in it's death throws if this is what they are doing instead of the work of the people.

Invesigations? Investigations? How about Iraq and Halliburton? How about Iraq and WMDs? How about Cheney's VP oil deals? How about torture? Investigate those, then call us back.

    Idiots!

It boggles the mind! Reince as head of the RNC and Palin as a former VP candidate. 2012 should be a disaster for the RNC with this fool at the helm. Woo Hoo! Count your blessings Barak!

Sheeeeesh like a three-ring circus. The RNC is made up of people like Romney, Limbaugh, Palin, Bachmann. I would have expected Beck to come out with this masssive "crime" revealling story- complete with graphs and maps of the Whitehouse. LOL.....this is too much.....I have just made out my Last Will because I am in the process of laughing myself to death.

I guess the RNC has nothing better to do with their time, much like their cohorts on Capitol Hill.

And for those that continue to put the condition of our economy on President Obama, your blame is as selective as your memory. This has been coming on for decades, and it is not going to get cleared up overnight. Yeah, things are bad, but one should consider that the economical collapse was so disastrous that things are going to get worse before they get better. They sure are a heckuva lot better than they would be if the McCain/Palin ticket had won.

items you won't see in this forum

    1) Obama's lying about his mothers health insurance and shamefully using her death for political gain
    2) Follow-up on Fast and Furious fiasco, who knew what, when?
    3) The continued extensive access to the White House by lobbyists
    4) Obama granting himself the power to appoint czars and provide waivers for lobbyists
    5) Financial ties to the waivers granted from Obamacare.

A free press is granted by the Constitution, a complicit press is an enbarassment.

Will anyone in the media have the guts to ask the questions and demand the answers? I doubt it. Todays press is lazy and ill prepared by our increasingly liberal universities and colleges. Step up CNN,
