WASHINGTON (CNN) - The U.S. House on Tuesday night passed the "cut, cap and balance" deficit reduction plan backed by tea party conservatives but dismissed by President Barack Obama, who offered strong praise for another proposal put together by a bipartisan group of senators.
The so-called Gang of Six plan - drafted by three Democratic and three Republican senators - presents a possible compromise to Obama and congressional leaders as they approach a deadline for a deal on cutting federal deficits in order to gain Republican support for raising the federal debt ceiling to avoid an unprecedented default.
Check out the Cornell University study released last week or so that found that half of US social program recipients believe they "have not used a government social program." Now...go back and factor that in to your understanding of just how the GOP manages to get away with convincing people to vote against their own interests.
If BHO likes it, then it has to be a bad idea.
The GOP voted SEVEN times to raise the debt ceiling under Bush....SEVEN TIMES mind you and there was NO big fuss about it. In fact before now I bet many Americans didn't know what a debt ceiling was or could care less. The Tea Party is going to only ruin the GOP that we once knew with their "our way or the highway" stance. I bet though if President Obama had come out and at first said he was against raising the debt ceiling then the Republicans would have been in favor of it.
Obama should dismiss himself. He is absolutely doing nothing for this country except to bankrupt it. For sure he will be dismissed in 2012 so we don't have to see or hear him again. Can't wait for that day. He can retire to Hawaii and stay there!!!!!
Ever heard of the phrase from NBA basketball, "hack a shaq?" Well this type of legislation should be called "harry Barry."
I could offer an economic explanation of why the GOP is chasing a bad idea, but why? This debate has nothing to do with economics and less than nothing to do with the wisest path for America. This is a debate about simple, fanatical political opposition. Whatever the President supports, they oppose with all their heart.
The pendulum has swung too far to the right. It needs to go back to the center. Moving part of the tax burden to the rich is not socialism or class warfare. Raising overall taxes until the budget is closer to balanced is not a government takeover. It's called paying for what you want your government to do.
Cut, Cap and Balance. What did the White House call it? Duck, Dodge and Dismantle! That's exactly what that does.
I'm still waiting for these nutjob GOBPbaggin' cult members to ask for corporations and filthy rich to make sacrifices along with the rest of us. So far the teatards have continued to bow down to the whims of their wealthy masters.
"The provisions that require 2/3 vote of each chamber of Congress is grossly unconstitutional."
I say let them play their games with themselves. America is paying more attention to what Republicans are not doing."
Typical liberal statement to blame Republicans for their own failures. This administration has lost a great deal of support from independents due to the mishandling of the economy. If it weren't for Republicans keeping Democrats in check, spending would skyrocket even higher. Hard to imagine with the record spending to date, but Democrats have only one way to "increase revenues"; Taxes!
Cut, Cap, Balance will instantly send the economy back into recession. The debt ceiling should be raised with no strings attached.
yeah because the economy is doing so remarkably well right now that almost 20% are unemployed or under employed. Older workers have had to file for SS retirement benefits early when they got laid off and couldn't find work.
Looks like the Obama Jhedi magic has worked on you and others.
Obama: "9.2% unemployment, what 9.2% unemployment? I don't see it? Crushing debt? What crushing debt? I don't see it? Sky rocketing food and fuel prices? What sky rocketing food and fuel prices? I don't see it? You must be imagining it. It is hot out. Move along now. Trust me, not your own eyes, and brain."
