Washington (CNN) - First lady Michelle Obama will tape an appearance on network reality television Thursday.
The ABC show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" confirms Mrs. Obama will appear as a guest star working on behalf of military families.
She will travel to Fayetteville, N.C., Thursday to work on the renovation of "The Steps-N-Stages Jubilee House," which offers shelter, support, mentoring, and life coaching for homeless female veterans. The trip is part of the first lady's ongoing "Joining Forces" initiative in support of military families and those in uniform.
According to ABC, the show is set to focus on 15-year navy veteran Barbara Marshall, who has become "passionately committed" to supporting the military. Marshall is a former military chaplain who founded the community center and has actively helped fellow female veterans overcome severe challenges caused by homelessness.
The first lady is expected to help build a new Jubilee House, work on a greenhouse project and help with a children's playhouse. She will also take part in a special project in honor of Marshall.
ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" performs renovations for families, individuals and groups who have experienced hardships.

Had me worried for a second. I mean the thought of the leader of the free world (or his/her spouse) starring in one of those ridiculous "reality" show fiascos is insane. They would be a laughing stock, and would make a laughing stock of this country. "Reality" tv is the junk food of the entertainment business, and being on one of those shows should be automatic disqualification from even thinking about running for public office. I'd never vote for someone on a show like that.
Of course, Extreme Makeover isn't really "reality tv", it's more like a documentary series. And she's not "heading to [it]", she's going to be a guest star on one episode. Because who in their right mind would want to be on one of those "reality" tv shows? No one but a self-important, narcissistic ego-maniac.
Normally I would question why the First Lady of the United States was out doing "Reality TV" and would condem here for her actions. In THIS case though I think she has chosen very carefully and shows great grace in making herself available to work on the renovation of a community center for homeless female veterans. As a veteran I appreciate that the First Family has chosen to become involved in this project for those that are less fortunate or disabled. Kind of takes the sting off other focus items she has been a bonehead about.

No matter what her enemies say about her, she is EDUCATED (no silver spoon, college educated, ivy league scholar law graduate) and very intelligent. Those who can't relate, do not know what a normal college classroom actually looks like I believe. The racial hatred and ignorance towards the first family needs to stop – and her platform to support military families is the best of the best initiatives I've ever seen to derive from any first lady ~ Go, First Lady Obama – We support you and your family 100 percent.

Very strange. She and her husband are the first occupants of the White House to have a deep and abiding hate of our military. So the big question is why is she doing this ? It probably tested well in the polls. Disgusting.

Michelle Obama is a classy First Lady. Why didn't the media obsess over what Laura Bush had for lunch at a Super Bowl Party, or what shoes she wore? People hate her because she's a great person.

Glad she has chosen to help those in the military. At first I thought she was thinking ahead to 2012 when she will need a new career choice.

It's election time people your going to see a lot more of her. This is nothing but calculated grandstanding. She has nothing to lose. If you say it's grandstanding your a bad person because she's helping the veterans. Is she really for ALL Americans, of all the first ladies that I have seen she seems to act the most restrained when it comes to dealing with ALL Americans. DON'T DO IT!!! Reality television is the most bottom-feeding and degenerate of all entertainment. It needs to be allowed to fade away into obscurity. It doesn't matter how popular they are with the general public. If anything, she should be taking a stand against these kind of shows that do little more than exploit its contestants and abandon them once the cameras stop rolling. However noble her intentions may be, having the First Lady of the United States appear on one of these programs legitimizes reality TV in general. Call me crazy all you want, but that is dangerous. Granted, there are much worse things on television, but at least those shows acknowledge that they are fictional. Reality TV, by its very name, implies that the material they broadcast is what happens in real life. We've all seen these shows before, and we know that these shows are just as scripted as any sitcom, but a child sees it as a window to the world. Do you really want your kids growing up with this viewpoint? The last public figure to appear on a reality television program was Sarah Palin...'nuff said.
Oh yeah, they've shown such "hate for the military". What else have you made up? When did you move out of reality?
