CNN Poll: Strong partisan divide on debt ceiling

Washington (CNN) – Americans are hungry for a solution to the debt ceiling debate but there is a big partisan divide that isn't going to make a solution easy to achieve, according to a new national survey.

And a CNN/ORC International Poll also indicates that while Democrats and independent voters are open to a number of different approaches, Republicans draw the line at tax increases, and many of them oppose raising the nation's debt ceiling under any circumstances.

Huntsman nabs former Huckabee backer

PORTSMOUTH, New Hampshire (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman picked up an endorsement Thursday from a state lawmaker who backed Mike Huckabee in the 2008 GOP presidential primary.

State Rep. Julie Brown supported Huckabee, a social conservative, in the last election, but said economic concerns have now trumped social issues.

CNN Poll: 50 percent say ending shuttle program is bad for country

Washington (CNN) - Half of all Americans say that the end of the space shuttle program is bad for the country, according to a new national survey released as the last shuttle mission came to a close.

And a CNN/ORC International Poll also indicates that most of the public wants to U.S. to develop a new spacecraft that will send astronauts into space, but a majority say they would prefer that private enterprise rather than a government program achieve that goal.

States brace for debt ceiling default

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - Just the threat of a federal default is prompting California to get a $5 billion loan to make sure it can pay its obligations.

States around the nation are drawing up contingency plans in the event that federal policymakers don't resolve the debt ceiling impasse by Aug. 2. They are preparing for chaos in the municipal debt markets and delays in federal payments for Medicaid, education and other services, which could happen if the federal government defaults on its obligations.

Pawlenty clarifies Bachmann jab

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty walked back earlier criticism of rival Michele Bachmann's migraines on Wednesday, calling the attention over her headaches "a sideshow."

"I think it's mostly a sideshow," Pawlenty said on Fox News. "I've observed Congresswoman Bachmann. I've never seen her have a medical condition or impairment that would seem to be a concern."

CNN: Obama continues debt talks with Democrats, then Republicans
At his daily briefing, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney signaled to reporters that [President Barack] Obama would be willing to accept a short-term increase in the debt ceiling - which caps the amount of money the government can borrow - if it is tied to agreement by both parties on a broader deficit reduction deal sought by the president. Obama previously rejected such a short-term increase in the debt ceiling, and Carney's remarks sought to bolster support for a compromise in the talks as the deadline for default nears.

CNN: Congress curbs enthusiasm for 'Gang of Six' plan
The burst of enthusiasm Tuesday for the "Gang of Six" debt reduction plan as a possible way out of the debt ceiling crisis appeared to fade Wednesday as Democratic and Republican lawmakers studied and found fault with the details of the proposal. Most notably, both sides highlighted well-worn party-line divisions: conservatives complained the plan would raise taxes while liberals warned it would cut entitlement benefits.
